The 1 oz Wonders of Australia gold coin launched in 2026 as a new annual bullion series from the Perth Mint, themed on Australia's natural landscapes and wildlife. The inaugural release is titled "The Outback," featuring a detailed scene of iconic outback fauna and terrain. The gold version is struck in .9999 fine gold with a mintage capped at 10,000 pieces, positioning it between the unlimited 1 oz gold Kangaroo and the highly limited 1 oz gold Swan (5,000 mintage) in terms of scarcity.

The series launched across three metals simultaneously: gold (.9999), silver (.9999, 75,000 mintage), and platinum (.9995, 5,000 mintage). Three-metal availability from day one is unusual for a new bullion programme and signals Perth Mint's ambition for the series as a significant addition to its lineup alongside the established Kangaroo, Lunar, and Kookaburra ranges.

Designed by Perth Mint artist Jennifer McKenna, the reverse of the Outback gold coin depicts a dynamic Australian landscape with wedge-tailed eagles in flight, emus, kangaroos, dingoes, crocodiles, and a frilled-neck lizard amid native flora, with sandstone formations and a watering hole. The series name suggests future annual themes covering different Australian natural landmarks or ecosystems, following the pattern of annual design changes across Perth Mint's other series.

A separate collector proof version exists with an embedded opal gemstone (silver only), a Perth Mint speciality that combines precious metal with precious stone. This proof edition is distinct from the bullion issue and significantly more expensive.

The Outback reverse features an intricate Australian landscape scene with multiple native animals in a single composition. The silver version (40.90 mm diameter) provides the largest canvas for the design detail. The platinum version is struck at 32.60 mm diameter. Face values are AUD $1 (silver) and AUD $100 (platinum); the gold face value is expected to follow Perth Mint conventions but is not yet confirmed in publicly available documentation.

Security features include a micro-laser engraved letter on each coin, visible under magnification, consistent with the Perth Mint's standard anti-counterfeiting approach across its modern bullion range. The obverse carries the Dan Thorne effigy of King Charles III with denomination, weight, and fineness inscriptions.

The proof collector edition (separate from bullion) adds an embedded opal gemstone to the silver coin and features additional fauna: a python, wolf spider, bilby, spinifex pigeons, perentie, echidnas, blue-tongued skink, desert tree frogs, and a rock wallaby. UK

VAT-exempt as investment gold. Not CGT-exempt, as Perth Mint coins are not UK legal tender. Only coins with sterling face values (such as the Britannia) qualify for CGT exemption. Gains on disposal are taxed at 18% or 24% with a GBP 3,000 annual allowance. Silver and platinum versions from non-UK mints carry 20% VAT.

United States

The .9999 purity meets the IRS 99.5% threshold for IRA eligibility. As a government-issued legal tender coin, the Wonders of Australia gold should qualify for self-directed precious metals IRAs, subject to custodian acceptance.
