About the 5g American Gold Eagle Gold Coin
The 5g American Gold Eagle
The 5g American Gold Eagle is a fractional denomination from the US Mint's gold bullion programme, carrying the same design lineage and alloy composition as the larger denominations in the series. Struck in 22-karat (916.7 millesimal) crown gold, the coin contains exactly 5 grams of pure gold alloyed with silver and copper, making the total coin weight slightly higher than the stated gold content.
The American Gold Eagle holds a unique position among sovereign coins. Its 22-karat alloy is now shared only with the South African Krugerrand among major bullion programmes. The Britannia switched from 22 karat to .9999 in 2013, leaving the Eagle and Krugerrand as the last major holdouts from the traditional crown gold standard. The durability argument for the alloy is genuine: the copper and silver content makes the coin harder and more resistant to bag marks and scratching than pure gold coins, which are noticeably soft.
The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Lady Liberty, adapted from his 1907 $20 Double Eagle design. The reverse was refreshed in 2021, moving from Miley Busiek Frost's family of eagles (Type I) to Jennie Norris' close-up eagle portrait (Type II). This was the first design change in the programme's 35-year history. Type II coins also introduced an anti-counterfeiting edge feature where an intentionally omitted reed creates a notch, with the position changing annually.

By law, the gold in American Eagles must be sourced from deposits within the United States, then alloyed with domestically sourced silver and copper. The 22-karat standard ("crown gold") has deep historical roots, used for English gold coinage from 1526 and for the original gold sovereign. It had not been used in US coins since 1834 (the standard after 1837 was .900 fine), making the American Gold Eagle's adoption of it in 1986 something of a historical callback.
The coin's total weight exceeds 5g because the alloy metals add to the mass. Buyers sometimes confuse total weight with gold content; each coin contains exactly its stated weight of pure gold. The additional copper and silver contribute negligible monetary value but serve the practical function of increasing hardness and wear resistance.
5g American Gold Eagle Tax Treatment
- United States: IRA-eligible by specific statutory name under IRC Section 408(m)(3). This exemption exists because the coin was created partly as a retirement savings vehicle, and it bypasses the normal 99.5% purity requirement for IRA gold. Capital gains taxed at the collectibles rate (up to 28%). Over 35 states exempt bullion from sales tax.
- United Kingdom: VAT-exempt as investment gold. At 916.7 fine, it exceeds the 900 minimum for post-1800 legal tender coins. Subject to CGT at the individual's rate (not CGT-exempt as it is not UK legal tender).
- European Union: VAT-exempt under the Investment Gold Directive. Listed on the EU's annual schedule of qualifying investment gold coins.
- Canada: The 916.7 fineness falls below Canada's 99.5% GST/HST exemption threshold. Not RRSP-eligible.
- Australia: Below the 99.5% threshold for GST exemption on investment gold. May attract 10% GST.
- Singapore: Below the 99.5% IPM threshold. Subject to 9% GST.
- Hong Kong: No sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax.
5g American Gold Eagle Compared
The 5g American Gold Eagle and the 5g American Eagle share the same manufacturer, alloy, and design heritage. Both are US Mint products at 22-karat fineness with identical gold content. The distinction is one of series classification rather than physical product, and dealers may list them interchangeably.
Against the 5g Maple Leaf, the key trade-offs are the same as at every denomination: the Maple Leaf offers .9999 purity, Bullion DNA authentication, and qualification for tax exemptions in more jurisdictions. The American Gold Eagle offers the crown gold durability advantage, stronger brand recognition in the US market, and the critical IRA eligibility exemption for American retirement accounts.
For UK buyers, neither the American Gold Eagle nor the Maple Leaf is CGT-exempt. Buyers who value capital gains tax exemption at approximately this weight should consider fractional Britannia or Sovereign coins instead, as UK legal tender coins carry this benefit. The Sovereign at 7.32g (roughly 1/4oz) is the nearest standard UK coin by weight, though at 916.7 fine it shares the 22-karat alloy with the American Eagle rather than the .9999 standard of the modern Britannia.
Compared to privately minted 5g products like the 5g PAMP Lunar, the American Gold Eagle offers sovereign mint backing, legal tender status, and wider dealer recognition. The PAMP product counters with .9999 purity, Veriscan digital authentication, and collectible zodiac designs that appeal to the gifting market. For pure investment purposes, the sovereign coin is the more conservative choice; for culturally themed gifts, the PAMP Lunar has its own appeal.
