About the Commander Gold

Military Commanders in 9999 Gold

The Commander series is a prestige bullion programme from Scottsdale Mint, honouring legendary military leaders throughout history. The gold versions are struck at 9999 fine purity in two sizes: a 1 oz gold coin and a fractional 1/10 oz gold coin, both carrying legal tender status. The series launched in 2024 as a planned 12-coin programme, releasing three commanders per year over four years, and is distributed exclusively through SD Bullion.

The 2024 inaugural releases featured Napoleon Bonaparte, General George S. Patton Jr., and Hernan Cortes, issued as legal tender of Liberia. The 2025 releases (Julius Caesar, Ulysses S. Grant, and Charlemagne) switched to Samoa as the issuing authority. A 2026 George Washington release is timed for the US semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. From an initial proposal list of 18 potential subjects including Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and Admiral Horatio Nelson, the remaining five selections have not yet been announced.

The series is most distinctive in its 5 oz silver format (where the "unbound edge" or "ruptured edge" technique creates a unique irregular profile on each coin), but the gold versions carry the same 9999 purity and proof-like finish in a conventional reeded-edge format. Gold coins ship in Scottsdale Mint's proprietary Certi-Lock assay packaging.

The exclusive distribution through SD Bullion means these coins cannot be purchased from APMEX, JM Bullion, or other major dealers. This limits competition-driven pricing and secondary market liquidity compared to more widely distributed products. Buyers should factor the single-dealer availability into their purchase decision.

The 1 oz gold coin is particularly scarce with a mintage of only 500 pieces per year. This is among the lowest production runs for any gold bullion coin from a sovereign-licensed programme, placing it firmly in the collector-bullion category rather than standard investment bullion. The 1/10 oz fractional at 2,000 pieces is more accessible but still limited compared to mainstream sovereign fractional gold, where mintages typically run into tens of thousands or higher.

Gold coins ship in Scottsdale Mint's proprietary Certi-Lock assay packaging, which provides unique authenticity credentials and tamper-evident sealing. NGC and PCGS graded versions are available for the silver format, though the gold coins are typically collected in their original Certi-Lock packaging rather than submitted for third-party grading given the already tiny mintage.

The planned 12-coin series will run through 2027, with the remaining five subjects to be selected from an initial proposal list that included Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and Admiral Horatio Nelson among others. The 2026 George Washington release is timed for the US semiquincentennial (250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence).

Tax Treatment of Commander Gold Coins

Commander gold coins carry legal tender status (Liberia for 2024 issues, Samoa for 2025 onward), which affects their tax classification in several jurisdictions. The 9999 purity further supports favourable treatment under investment gold rules.

VAT and Sales Tax

  • US: No federal sales tax. State-level exemptions for bullion apply in most states. Many states exempt all bullion regardless of legal tender status, though the Liberian/Samoan legal tender backing provides additional qualification in states with narrower definitions. This is the primary market, with exclusive distribution through SD Bullion.
  • UK: VAT-exempt as investment gold. Gold coins with legal tender status and fineness of 900+ qualify under UK rules. The 9999 purity and Liberian/Samoan legal tender status meet this requirement.
  • EU: VAT-exempt under the EU Investment Gold Directive for gold coins that are legal tender in their country of origin, post-1800, and at least 900 fine.
  • Canada: GST/HST-exempt on gold coins of 99.5%+ purity.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold (99.5%+ purity).
  • Singapore: GST-exempt as Investment Precious Metals (IPM) for qualifying gold coins of 99.5%+ purity.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax or import duty of any kind.

Capital Gains Tax

  • UK: Subject to CGT at the individual's rate. Not UK legal tender, so the CGT exemption for Britannias and Sovereigns does not apply.
  • US: Classified as a collectible. Long-term gains (held over one year) taxed at up to 28%, not the lower 15/20% rate for equities. Short-term gains taxed as ordinary income.

Retirement Accounts

  • US (IRA): The 9999 purity meets IRS Section 408(m) requirements for precious metals IRAs. Availability through SD Bullion (a major US dealer) supports custodian familiarity, though individual custodian acceptance should be confirmed before purchasing.

Commander vs American Gold Eagle and Limited-Edition Sovereigns

The Commander series gold coins sit at the intersection of bullion and numismatics, with very low mintages (500 for the 1 oz gold) and exclusive distribution creating a different buying proposition from mainstream gold coins.

Against the American Gold Eagle, the comparison is straightforward. The Eagle offers government backing from the US Mint, massive mintages, universal dealer acceptance, the tightest buy-sell spreads in the US market, and decades of secondary market history. The Commander offers 9999 purity (vs the Eagle's 22-karat alloy), a different aesthetic, and scarcity. For buyers prioritising liquidity and cost efficiency, the Eagle is the practical choice. For buyers attracted to limited-edition gold with military historical themes, the Commander fills a niche the Eagle does not attempt.

The British Britannia and Canadian Maple Leaf, both 9999 fine and produced in large quantities, represent the mainstream sovereign gold coin market. These offer comparable purity, broader dealer networks, and CGT/VAT advantages that the Commander cannot match in their home markets (the Britannia is CGT-exempt in the UK, for instance). The Commander's appeal is not in competing with these products on standard bullion metrics but in offering something different: a themed collector series with genuine scarcity.

The exclusive SD Bullion distribution is both a feature and a limitation. It creates a curated buying experience and maintains premium levels, but it also means no competitive pricing from multiple dealers and a narrower resale channel. Buyers should consider whether they are comfortable with a single-dealer relationship for both purchase and future liquidation. The 500-piece gold mintage suggests these coins will hold value for collectors, but the secondary market for such low-mintage products can be thin and pricing unpredictable compared to mass-market sovereign gold.
