About the Good Luck Yellow Dragon Gold

PAMP Suisse Good Luck Yellow Dragon Gold Bars

The Good Luck Yellow Dragon is a minted gold bar from PAMP Suisse, part of their "Good Luck" collection featuring culturally significant symbols of fortune and prosperity. The design draws on the Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) from Chinese mythology, considered the most sacred of the five celestial dragons. The Yellow Dragon embodies the element of earth, occupies the central position among the celestial dragons, and is associated with the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi), the legendary first emperor who was said to have transformed into a yellow dragon upon death. The creature symbolises legitimate rulership, imperial power, good fortune, and protection.

PAMP Suisse (Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux), founded in 1977 in Castel San Pietro, Ticino, Switzerland, was the first refinery in the world to produce minted gold bars with artistic designs. Their Lady Fortuna bar, introduced the same year, effectively created the decorated gold bar category. The Good Luck Yellow Dragon extends this tradition into specifically Asian-themed cultural territory.

The bars are struck in .9999 fine gold and sealed in PAMP's tamper-evident CertiPAMP assay cards, each with an individual serial number. The assay card for the Yellow Dragon uses a red colour, a deliberate cultural element as red symbolises good luck and fortune in Chinese gift-giving traditions. Available sizes include 1 oz, 5g, and a MultiGRAM+25 format (25 x 1g snap-apart bars designed for fractional gifting). The bars are available at major US dealers and at Costco, which has become a significant bullion retailer in recent years.

The reverse displays an ornate depiction of the Yellow Dragon rendered in intricate detail with lotus flower motifs, with the "GOOD LUCK" inscription. The obverse carries the PAMP Suisse logo at the top, with weight, metal content, purity, and the bar's unique serial number. Each bar has a smooth edge finish.

Security Features

Every bar ships in a CertiPAMP assay card, sealed at the point of manufacture with a tamper-evident seal that shows visible evidence of any breach. The assay card certifies weight, metal content, purity, and serial number. PAMP's Veriscan technology (surface-topology scanning via smartphone app) is available on some PAMP products, primarily the Lady Fortuna line. Whether the Good Luck Yellow Dragon line carries Veriscan has not been confirmed.

PAMP holds LBMA Good Delivery accreditation, backing the refining and assay process. The bars are produced at PAMP's Ticino facility using a proprietary high-pressure minting process that achieves extremely fine detail in the dragon design.

Tax Treatment for PAMP Good Luck Yellow Dragon Gold Bars

As PAMP-produced gold bars with no face value, the Yellow Dragon bars are not legal tender. Tax treatment follows standard rules for gold bullion bars of .9999 purity.

Purchase Tax

  • United Kingdom: VAT-exempt as investment gold. Gold bars at .995+ purity qualify.
  • European Union: VAT-exempt under EU Investment Gold Directive 98/80/EC.
  • United States: No federal sales tax. State-level exemptions apply in roughly 35 states. Costco availability means many buyers encounter these bars in a retail setting where state sales tax rules apply directly.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals (IPM) scheme for gold bars of .995+ purity and at least 0.5 troy ounce.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no VAT. Combined with the Yellow Dragon's cultural resonance in Chinese communities, Hong Kong is a natural market for this product.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt for gold bullion at .995+ purity.
  • Australia: GST-free for investment gold.

Capital Gains and Retirement Accounts

UK buyers should note that gold bars are subject to CGT on disposal. For CGT-free gold in the UK, only legal tender coins like the Britannia qualify. PAMP bars do qualify as SIPP-eligible gold for UK pension wrappers.

In the United States, the .9999 purity exceeds the .995 minimum for IRA eligibility, and PAMP bars are widely accepted by IRA custodians. Gains outside retirement accounts are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate. Singapore and Hong Kong impose no capital gains tax.

Yellow Dragon vs Lady Fortuna, Perth Mint Dragon, and Credit Suisse

PAMP's own Lady Fortuna is the most liquid PAMP design, available in a broader range of sizes (1g to 10 oz) and recognised by virtually every bullion dealer worldwide. The Fortuna commands tighter dealer spreads on resale. The Yellow Dragon is more culturally targeted, with its appeal strongest in Asian markets and for gifting occasions rooted in Chinese cultural traditions. For pure investment liquidity, the Fortuna is the better choice. For a meaningful gift that carries cultural significance, the Yellow Dragon serves a purpose the Fortuna does not.

The Perth Mint produces dragon-themed bullion under several programmes, including the Dragon Rectangular series and the Lunar Series dragon years. Those are government-issued legal tender coins carrying higher face values and different tax treatment in some jurisdictions. The PAMP Yellow Dragon is a private-mint bar without legal tender status, but from a top-tier LBMA refiner with premium packaging.

The PAMP Buddha bar, part of the Faith series, competes in the same culturally themed gifting segment. The Buddha bar has broader cross-cultural appeal across Buddhist traditions, while the Yellow Dragon is specifically rooted in Chinese symbolism. Both carry identical .9999 purity, CertiPAMP packaging, and comparable premiums.

Against plain gold bars from Swiss competitors like Valcambi or Credit Suisse, the Yellow Dragon carries a design premium. A standard Credit Suisse or Valcambi 1 oz bar without artistic design will trade at a lower premium over spot. The additional cost buys the culturally significant design, the red CertiPAMP card, and the gifting/collectible positioning.

The Huanglong, or Yellow Dragon, is a figure from Chinese mythology associated with the element of earth, imperial authority, good fortune, and abundant harvests. It occupies the central position among the five celestial dragons. The Yellow Emperor of Chinese legend was said to have transformed into a yellow dragon, cementing the creature's link to legitimate rulership and divine protection. PAMP adopted the design for its cultural resonance with Lunar New Year gifting traditions.
The Good Luck Yellow Dragon series is available in three weights: 5 grams, 1 troy oz (31.10 grams), and a MultiGRAM+25 format containing 25 individual 1-gram bars in a single assay card. All versions are .9999 fine gold. The 5 gram and 1 oz bars each carry an individual serial number and are sealed in PAMP's red-themed CertiPAMP tamper-evident assay card.
PAMP Suisse is a Swiss precious metals refiner founded in 1977 and based in Castel San Pietro, Ticino. It holds LBMA Good Delivery accreditation for gold and silver, meaning its bars meet stringent international standards for weight, purity, and dimensions. PAMP introduced minted bars with artistic designs, starting with Lady Fortuna in 1977, and developed Veriscan, a surface-topology authentication system. Its CertiPAMP assay card system provides tamper-evident certification on every bar.
