About the 1/4 oz Silver Buffalo Gold Round
CNT's Quarter-Ounce Gold Buffalo Round
The 1/4 oz CNT Silver Buffalo gold round applies the iconic Buffalo Nickel design to a fractional gold format. CNT (Carolina Nugget and Trading), founded in 1973, is the largest privately owned company in the US precious metals industry. The company's minting division produces the round in .9999 fine gold, using James Earle Fraser's public-domain design that originated on the US five-cent piece minted from 1913 to 1938.
The Buffalo design is the most widely produced generic round motif in the bullion market. In silver, Buffalo rounds are the entry-level stacking product, consistently carrying the lowest premiums available. The gold version occupies a different market position: at 1/4 oz, it serves buyers who want fractional gold exposure through a recognisable design without paying sovereign coin premiums. The design's universal recognition among US dealers supports resale, though liquidity remains below that of government-issued 1/4 oz gold coins.
Fraser's original design depicts a composite Native American portrait on the obverse, combining features from three sitters: Iron Tail (Oglala Lakota), Two Moons (Northern Cheyenne), and John Big Tree (Seneca). The reverse shows an American bison, modelled after "Black Diamond," a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo. The 2006 launch of the US Mint's American Gold Buffalo coin (a sovereign .9999 gold coin using Fraser's design) renewed broad interest in the Buffalo motif, benefiting private mint rounds that use the same public-domain artwork.

Tax Treatment of CNT Gold Buffalo Rounds
At .9999 purity, this round meets all international investment gold thresholds. It is important not to confuse this private mint round with the US Mint's American Gold Buffalo coin, which has different legal tender status and IRA eligibility.
- US: State sales tax varies; most states exempt bullion. Capital gains at 28% collectibles rate. IRA eligibility is possible for .9999 fine rounds from approved manufacturers, but CNT's specific IRA qualification status should be confirmed with your custodian. The US Mint's American Gold Buffalo (a legal tender coin) is IRA-eligible; this private mint round may or may not be.
- UK: VAT-exempt as investment gold (.9999 exceeds 995 fine threshold). Subject to CGT on disposal.
- Canada: GST/HST exempt (purity exceeds 99.5%).
- EU: VAT-exempt as investment gold under Directive 98/80/EC.
- Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold.
- New Zealand: GST-exempt (purity exceeds 99.5%).
- Singapore: GST-exempt as Investment Precious Metal.
