About the 1/4 oz Walking Liberty Gold Round
Golden State Mint Walking Liberty in 1/4 oz Gold
The 1/4 oz Golden State Mint Walking Liberty gold round brings Adolph Weinman's celebrated 1916 design to a fractional gold format. Golden State Mint (GSM), based in Calabasas, California, is one of the largest US private mints, producing rounds and bars in gold, silver, and copper. The Walking Liberty design is public domain, having originated on the US half dollar minted from 1916 to 1947, and was later adapted by the US Mint for the American Silver Eagle in 1986.
Weinman's obverse depicts Liberty striding toward the sunrise, draped in the American flag, carrying laurel and oak branches symbolising civil and military glory. The design was originally created for a 1915 competition organised by Mint Director Robert Woolley through the Commission of Fine Arts, competing against submissions from Hermon MacNeil and Albin Polasek. The German-born Weinman (Karlsruhe, 1870) also designed the Mercury dime.
In silver, Walking Liberty rounds from various mints are among the lowest-premium products available, trading at minimal markups over spot. The gold version occupies a similar "low premium for its category" position within 1/4 oz gold rounds, though the premium differential between generic gold rounds and sovereign coins is narrower than in silver. Golden State Mint's version lacks security features beyond its hallmark; buyers wanting authentication technology should consider the 1/4 oz Maple Leaf with its Bullion DNA micro-engraving.

The obverse reproduces Weinman's Walking Liberty figure; the reverse carries Golden State Mint's branding alongside weight and purity markings. GSM's interpretation is a tribute to the original, not an exact replica; inscriptions differ from the half dollar (removing US government markings, adding the mint name). No anti-counterfeiting features are present. Walking Liberty rounds from any producer are among the most commonly counterfeited silver products; in gold at this weight, the counterfeit risk is somewhat lower due to the smaller market volume, but buyers should still purchase from reputable sources.
Walking Liberty Gold Round Tax Treatment
As a .9999 fine gold round from a private mint, the tax position is straightforward: investment gold purity exemptions apply, but no legal tender benefits (such as UK CGT exemption) are available.
- US: State sales tax varies. Capital gains at the 28% collectibles rate. Not IRA-eligible (private mint rounds generally do not meet IRS requirements unless the manufacturer is specifically approved by the custodian).
- UK: VAT-exempt as investment gold (.9999 exceeds 995 fine). Subject to Capital Gains Tax on disposal. No CGT exemption (not UK legal tender). A 1/4 oz Britannia provides CGT exemption that this round cannot.
- Canada: GST/HST exempt (purity exceeds 99.5%).
- EU: VAT-exempt as investment gold under Directive 98/80/EC.
- Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold.
- New Zealand: GST-exempt (purity exceeds 99.5%).
- Singapore: GST-exempt as Investment Precious Metal.
- Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no CGT.
