About the Zodiac Gold

Monarch Precious Metals Gold Zodiac Bars

The Zodiac series from Monarch Precious Metals comprises 12 designs, one for each astrological sign, produced as gold bars and silver rounds by this family-owned American private mint. Monarch Precious Metals was founded in 2008 as Oregon Coin and Jewelry in the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon, later relocating to Phoenix, Oregon. The company started with a small jewelry-store induction melter, hand-pouring and hand-stamping silver bars with individual letter stamps before growing into a recognised private mint.

The gold versions are produced as small bars in .9999 fine purity, with the 0.5g Zodiac gold bar providing the most accessible entry point and a 5g Zodiac gold bar offering a heavier option. Unlike government-issued coins, these carry no face value, no legal tender status, and no denomination. They are private mint products valued solely for their gold content and craftsmanship. The silver rounds in the series feature an ultra high relief antique finish with individual hand polishing, giving each piece an aged, archaic appearance that complements the astrological theme.

All twelve zodiac signs are covered: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each design includes the zodiac sign's date range, making these popular as personalised gifts (buy the recipient's sign), which is a distinct market from pure bullion investment. The common obverse features a combined sun and moon face superimposed on each other, set among stars, with the metal weight and purity inscribed. Each reverse features the zodiac sign's symbol surrounded by intricate detailing, including a ring showing all 12 signs around the border.

The gold bars do not carry the security features associated with government mint coins (no micro-engraving, no holograms, no latent security elements). Authentication relies on the inherent difficulty of replicating detailed designs and the weight/purity verification that any precious metals dealer can perform. Monarch Precious Metals guarantees the weight and purity of their products, but without the sovereign government backing that coins from national mints carry.

The silver rounds in the series are struck at 1 troy oz of .999+ fine silver with a 39 mm diameter. The ultra high relief and antique finish applied to the silver versions are more elaborate than the gold bars, as the larger canvas allows greater design detail and the hand-polishing highlights the raised elements of the relief work.

Tax Treatment for Monarch Zodiac Gold

As private mint products without legal tender status, the Zodiac gold bars face different tax treatment than government-issued coins in several jurisdictions. The .9999 purity meets investment gold thresholds, but the lack of sovereign backing affects eligibility for certain tax-advantaged programmes.

  • United States: Not IRA-eligible. Section 408(m) requires precious metals for IRAs to come from a COMEX/NYMEX-approved refiner or a national government mint. Monarch Precious Metals does not meet either criterion. State sales tax varies; many states exempt bullion regardless of issuer, but some states that exempt coins may not exempt privately minted bars or rounds. Capital gains taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% for holdings over one year.
  • United Kingdom: The .9999 purity qualifies these as investment gold for VAT purposes (threshold is 995 thousandths). Gold bars from private mints are VAT-exempt in the UK provided they meet the purity standard. Not exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
  • Canada: GST/HST-exempt as investment-grade gold bullion with purity exceeding 99.5%. The exemption applies to bars and wafers regardless of the manufacturer, provided they are in a form traded on commodity markets. Capital gains are taxable.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold (99.5%+ purity) in a form commonly traded on commodity markets. The private mint origin does not affect the Australian exemption.
  • European Union: Gold bars of 995+ purity qualify as investment gold under the EU directive, regardless of manufacturer. VAT-exempt across EU member states.

Zodiac Gold Bars vs Government Coins and Other Private Mint Products

The Zodiac gold bars serve a fundamentally different purpose than government-issued gold coins. Government coins from the Canadian Maple Leaf, Australian Kangaroo, or Britannia programmes carry legal tender status, deeper liquidity, tighter buy-sell spreads, and eligibility for tax-advantaged accounts like IRAs and SIPPs. For buyers prioritising their gold holdings as a financial asset, government coins are the standard recommendation. The Zodiac bars trade at lower premiums than government coins but sacrifice liquidity and resale recognition in return.

Among private mint products, Monarch Precious Metals competes with SilverTowne, Sunshine Minting, and other US private mints. Monarch differentiates on the ultra high relief antique finish and hand-polished quality of their silver rounds, though the gold bars have a more conventional presentation. The zodiac theme also competes with other private mint zodiac rounds from Elemetal and SilverTowne, with Monarch's hand-finished aesthetic being the primary distinguishing factor.

The 0.5g gold bar sits at the micro-gold end of the market, where fabrication costs represent a significant percentage of the total price. At roughly half a gram of gold, the metal content value is modest, and the premium above spot is proportionally higher than on larger bars. The appeal is accessibility: a 0.5g gold bar costs a fraction of a full-ounce coin and serves as an entry point for new buyers, a gift item, or a way to dollar-cost-average into gold at small increments. The 5g bar offers a better ratio of metal content to fabrication cost while still remaining affordable relative to full-ounce products. For buyers who want the zodiac theme with more gold per piece, the 5g version provides the more efficient choice.
