About the 50g Metalor Gold Bar
The 50g Metalor Gold Bar
The 50g Metalor gold bar comes from one of the oldest precious metals refineries in Europe. Metalor's roots date back to 1852 in Le Locle, the heart of Switzerland's watchmaking region, where the company originally supplied gold components to watchmakers. By 1864, it had pivoted to banking bullion, and in 1934 it became the first Swiss refinery admitted to the London Good Delivery List. That distinction still stands: Metalor was refining for the London market before PAMP or Valcambi existed.
Today, Metalor Technologies is headquartered in Marin-Epagnier, near Neuchatel, with additional refineries in the United States (North Attleboro, Massachusetts), Hong Kong, Singapore, and China. All five facilities hold LBMA Good Delivery accreditation. The company was acquired by Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo, Japan's largest precious metals group, in 2016. Combined worldwide gold refining capacity is approximately 800 tonnes per year.
The 50g minted bar is one of the sizes that features Metalor's BullionProtect security technology, developed in partnership with SICPA, a Swiss security ink company. BullionProtect applies a high-security ink directly to the bar's surface, adding less than 20 milligrams of weight. The ink contains a unique QR code that can be scanned with any smartphone for instant authentication. The seal is robust and cannot be removed without visible damage. If the bar is eventually recycled, the ink burns away without adding any impurity to the gold.
At 50 grams (1.607 troy ounces), the bar sits at the premium efficiency sweet spot for metric bars. The fixed costs of manufacturing and packaging are spread across enough metal value that premiums drop sharply from the 5g Metalor bar level, yet the total outlay remains roughly half that of a 100g Metalor bar. For European buyers accumulating gold in metric increments, 50g is a natural step between casual purchases and larger-format holdings.

Security and Authentication
Minted bars at 20g and above carry a laser-engraved DataMatrix code and individual serial number. The DataMatrix code links to Metalor's product verification webpage when scanned. BullionProtect adds a second layer: the smartphone-scannable QR code in security ink provides authentication independent of the packaging.
The Metalor Check app (available on iOS and Android) allows owners to authenticate their bar and retrieve specifications including production location, purity, and detailed product data. This gives Metalor three independent verification paths: the DataMatrix code, the BullionProtect ink, and the mobile app.
Metalor's design is functional rather than decorative. The obverse carries the Metalor logo, weight, purity, and serial number. There is no annual design change and no artistic motif. The bar's identity rests on the refinery's reputation and security features rather than visual design appeal.
Tax Treatment of the 50g Metalor Gold Bar
At 999.9 purity from an LBMA-accredited refiner, the 50g Metalor bar qualifies for investment gold treatment in all major markets.
- United Kingdom: VAT-exempt as investment gold (995+ purity). Not CGT-exempt (bars carry no legal tender status). Gains above GBP 3,000 are taxed at 18-24%. UK buyers focused on CGT efficiency may prefer gold Britannia coins, which are CGT-free.
- United States: No federal sales tax; most states exempt investment bullion. Capital gains taxed at the 28% collectibles rate. IRA-eligible when held by an approved custodian. Metalor's US refinery in Massachusetts means some bars are domestically produced.
- Canada: GST/HST-exempt at 99.5%+ purity. Capital gains inclusion rate of 50% (66.67% above CAD 250,000 annually). RRSP and TFSA eligible.
- European Union: VAT-exempt as investment gold under Directive 98/80/EC. In Germany, gains are tax-free after one year of holding.
- Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold (99.5%+ purity). CGT applies with a 50% discount after 12 months.
- Singapore: GST-exempt under the IPM scheme. No CGT. Metalor operates a refinery in Singapore (since 2013) with approximately 150 tonnes per year capacity.
- Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no CGT. Metalor also has a Hong Kong refinery (since 1982).
- New Zealand: GST-exempt for gold at 99.5%+ purity.
- South Africa: Gold bullion is zero-rated for VAT. CGT at 40% inclusion rate.
50g Metalor vs Other 50g Gold Bars
Metalor bars typically trade at the competitive end of the premium range among LBMA-accredited 50g gold bars. The refinery's brand recognition among retail investors is lower than PAMP or Valcambi, which keeps purchase premiums keen. For buyers prioritising cost per gram, this is an advantage.
The 50g PAMP Suisse Fortuna is the highest-premium option, carrying the iconic Lady Fortuna design and VeriScan digital authentication. PAMP's brand premium is partly recoverable on resale (stronger secondary-market demand), but the initial cost per gram is higher. Metalor's BullionProtect offers comparable digital authentication via a different technology (security ink vs microscopic surface scanning), making the authentication gap smaller than it might appear.
The 50g Valcambi bar is Metalor's closest competitor on price. Both are Swiss LBMA refiners; both produce clean, functional bar designs without elaborate artistic motifs. Valcambi is the larger operation by volume (over 2,000 tonnes annually versus Metalor's approximately 800 tonnes). Valcambi does not offer an equivalent to BullionProtect or VeriScan for digital authentication, which gives Metalor a technology edge.
The 50g Argor-Heraeus bar uses kinebar holographic security, a visual authentication method embedded in the bar. Premiums are typically comparable to Metalor. The kinebar hologram is instantly visible; Metalor's BullionProtect requires a smartphone scan. Both approaches provide robust authentication but differ in convenience.
The 50g Heraeus bar from Germany's largest refiner trades at similar premiums to Metalor. Heraeus has a particularly strong position in the German-speaking market, where domestic provenance matters. Metalor counters with longer LBMA history (accredited since 1934, versus Heraeus's later addition) and the BullionProtect technology.
The 50g Perth Mint bar and 50g Britannia bar are the two government-mint alternatives. Both carry sovereign backing that private refiners cannot match. For buyers who specifically value government mint provenance, these two justify any premium differential over Metalor. For buyers focused on cost efficiency with strong authentication, Metalor's combination of competitive pricing and BullionProtect technology makes a compelling case.

Metalor is a Swiss precious metals refinery where its gold bars are produced. Each bar is individually serialised and comes with an assay certificate confirming weight and purity. The serial number links the physical bar to its certificate, which forms part of the bar's provenance record.
-
Each Metalor bar has a unique serial number stamped directly on the bar and recorded on its assay card. Checking that the number on the bar matches the number on the sealed card is the primary authentication step. Keeping the original sealed assay card intact is recommended, as it is part of the bar's documentation.
-
The Metalor 50g gold bar is 999.9 fine gold, equivalent to 24-carat. This is the highest standard purity for investment gold bars. The bar's weight and purity are stamped on the bar and confirmed on the assay certificate supplied with it.
