About the ABC Cast Bar Silver

ABC Refinery Silver Cast Bars

ABC Refinery cast bars are Australia's benchmark silver bullion product. ABC Refinery has operated since 1978 and is the only independent LBMA-accredited gold and silver refinery in Australia. It is also accredited by COMEX and the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE), making its bars tradeable on three of the world's most important bullion markets. The refinery sits within the Pallion group, Australia's largest independent precious metals services company, whose origins trace to the 1950s when Felix Parry established Palloys.

Cast bars are the traditional poured format. Molten silver is poured into a mould, producing a bar with a slightly rough, organic surface that varies from piece to piece. This contrasts with minted bars, which are cut from a rolled sheet and stamped with a die for a uniform finish. The cast production method typically results in slightly lower premiums than minted bars, since the process requires less labour-intensive finishing. For investors who prioritise metal content over aesthetics, cast bars are the more cost-efficient option.

ABC silver cast bars are produced at 999 to 999.5 fineness, with most retail sizes meeting the 999.5 (99.95%) standard. They span a wide range from 1 oz to 5 kg, with the 1 kg bar as the core product for Australian investors. Each bar carries the ABC Bullion swan hallmark, weight, purity stamp, and (for most retail sizes) an individual serial number. The LBMA accreditation means ABC bars are accepted globally by central banks, ETFs, and institutional traders. For domestic Australian buyers, the advantage is that ABC bars can be supplied without import since they are refined in-country, and they are GST-free for investment-grade silver at 99.9% purity or above.

All bars are stamped with the ABC Bullion swan hallmark, weight, and purity. Serialised bars carry a unique serial number. The Concast 1 kg variant uses a continuous casting process, producing a slightly more uniform surface than the traditional pour while still classified as a cast bar. Smaller bars are supplied in tamper-evident packaging.

ABC Silver Cast Bar Tax Treatment by Country

ABC Refinery explicitly markets its silver cast bars as GST exempt for Australian investors. The bars meet the "investment-grade precious metal" definition under Australian tax law: silver at 99.9% purity or above, in bar form, stamped with the manufacturer's mark, and priced at the metal's spot price. ABC's standard silver bars at 999 to 999.5 fineness comfortably exceed the 99.9% purity threshold that applies specifically to silver GST exemption in Australia.

Country-by-Country Summary

ABC Cast Bars vs Perth Mint, PAMP, and Other Silver Bars

ABC Refinery's primary competitor in Australia is the Perth Mint, the other major Australian bullion producer with LBMA accreditation (since 1957 for gold). The Perth Mint is government-owned by the Government of Western Australia, while ABC Refinery is an independent private company under the Pallion group. Both produce 999+ silver bars that qualify for GST-free treatment domestically. The Perth Mint has greater international brand recognition, particularly in North American and Asian markets. ABC Refinery counters with competitive pricing and a strong domestic dealer network, including ABC Bullion retail stores in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Against international competitors like PAMP Suisse 1 kg silver bars, ABC cast bars are typically more affordable. PAMP is the Swiss benchmark for silver bars and carries higher premiums driven by brand prestige. PAMP's Lady Fortuna design is iconic but appears only on minted bars, not cast bars. For investors focused on maximising silver content per dollar, ABC cast bars offer better value than PAMP. The trade-off is that PAMP and Valcambi bars may be easier to resell in European and North American markets where Swiss refineries carry stronger name recognition.

The cast format itself is a differentiator. Cast bars carry slightly lower premiums than minted bars because the production process is simpler. Each cast bar has a unique surface texture from the pouring process, which some buyers prefer aesthetically. Functionally, cast and minted bars of the same weight and purity are equivalent for investment purposes. The premium difference narrows at larger sizes, where minting costs become a smaller fraction of the total value.

For Australian buyers specifically, ABC bars have a practical advantage: they are refined domestically and do not need to be imported. This simplifies the supply chain and avoids any import-related complications. The combination of LBMA accreditation, domestic supply, and GST-free status makes ABC cast bars the default silver bullion product for many Australian investors, comparable to the role Silver Britannias play in the UK market or Silver Eagles in the US.
