About the 10 oz Southern Cross Silver Bar

Australian-Refined Silver with the Southern Cross Design

The 10 oz ABC Refinery Southern Cross Silver Bar carries the distinctive design of Australia's newest bullion collection, refined to 9999 fine silver (four nines) by ABC Refinery, the country's largest and only LBMA-accredited gold refinery. Launched in June 2025 by ABC Mint (a division of Pallion, the same group that owns the refinery), the Southern Cross collection features a kangaroo and emu in silhouette gazing toward the five stars of the Southern Cross constellation against an outback landscape.

The 9999 purity is a genuine differentiator for a silver bar. Most silver bullion products use 999 (three nines) as the standard. By matching the purity level of the Canadian Maple Leaf, one of only a handful of silver products worldwide at four nines, the Southern Cross positions itself at the top of the purity spectrum. This exceeds the investment-grade thresholds in every major jurisdiction and provides a comfortable margin for tax-exempt qualification in countries like Australia (99.9%+), Singapore (99.9%+), and Canada (99.9%+).

The collection was conceptualised by Ross MacDiarmid AO, former CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, and illustrated by coin artist Tony Dean. MacDiarmid's involvement brings sovereign mint sensibility to a private mint product. The collection is produced as an open, unlimited edition, positioning it as a genuine bullion investment product rather than a limited-edition collectible. Pricing is based on metal market value plus a modest premium.

Design Description

The main design depicts two iconic Australian animals, a kangaroo and an emu, shown in silhouette against a sweeping outback landscape. Both are gazing upward toward the five stars of the Southern Cross (Crux) rendered prominently in the sky. The kangaroo and emu were chosen as the two animals on Australia's coat of arms, commonly noted for being unable to walk backwards, symbolising forward progress. The Southern Cross constellation appears on the flags of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, and Samoa.

ABC Refinery is distinct from ABC Mint within the Pallion group: the refinery handles raw metal processing, while the mint handles coin and bar production. The complete Australian provenance chain (mined, refined, and minted domestically) is a marketing differentiator against imported products.

Tax Treatment by Jurisdiction

The 9999 purity and LBMA accreditation of ABC Refinery place this bar in the strongest possible position for tax-exempt qualification across jurisdictions that exempt investment-grade precious metals.

  • Australia: GST-free when sold as investment-grade silver (99.9%+ purity from a recognised refiner). ABC Refinery holds LBMA accreditation, the gold standard for refinery recognition. Capital gains tax applies on disposal with a 50% discount for individual holdings over 12 months. No CGT exemptions exist for bullion in Australia (unlike UK legal tender coins).
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt for silver at 99.9%+ purity. No formal capital gains tax, though gains may be taxable as income if acquired for the purpose of resale. The Southern Cross constellation's presence on the NZ flag gives the product cultural resonance in this market.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals (IPM) scheme for silver at 99.9%+ from LBMA-accredited refiners. ABC Refinery qualifies. No capital gains tax.
  • United States: No federal sales tax. State exemptions apply in most states. IRA eligibility likely given the LBMA accreditation and 9999 purity, though custodian acceptance should be verified.
  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT on silver bars. Not CGT-exempt. Gold versions from this collection are VAT-free as investment gold.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt at 99.9%+ purity.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.

Southern Cross vs Australian Market Alternatives

The Australian silver bar market is dominated by the Perth Mint, which is the established sovereign mint for bullion production. The Southern Cross from ABC represents an alternative domestic option with some distinct advantages.

vs Perth Mint Silver Bar: Both are produced by Australian institutions from domestically refined metal. Perth Mint bars are 999 fine; the Southern Cross is 9999. Perth Mint has substantially greater global brand recognition and liquidity. ABC Refinery is the only LBMA-accredited refinery in Australia (Perth Mint holds separate LBMA Good Delivery status for gold). The Southern Cross is newer to market and untested in terms of long-term secondary market demand.

vs 10 oz Perth Lunar Silver Bar: The Perth Lunar offers collectible appeal through its annually changing zodiac designs but at 999 purity. The Southern Cross offers higher purity (9999) with a fixed design and unlimited mintage. For buyers prioritising purity and consistent product availability over collectibility, the Southern Cross has the advantage.

vs Royal Canadian Mint 10 oz Silver Bar: The RCM bar is also 9999 fine silver with advanced security features (Bullion DNA, micro-engraved maple leaves). The RCM has stronger brand recognition internationally. For Australian buyers, the ABC product offers a domestic alternative without import logistics, and ABC's LBMA accreditation provides equivalent institutional credibility.

vs Generic International Bars: Bars from non-LBMA private mints trade at lower premiums but lack the accreditation that ensures smooth GST-free treatment in Australia and IPM eligibility in Singapore. The Southern Cross's LBMA backing and four-nines purity place it in the premium-branded category despite being priced for bullion buyers.
