About the 1 Kilo Fortuna Silver Bar

The Premium Swiss Kilo Silver Bar

The 1 Kilo PAMP Suisse Fortuna is the silver version of the most recognised minted bar design in the bullion market. PAMP (Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux) introduced the Lady Fortuna motif in 1979, making it the first decorative design ever placed on a precious metals bar. Before PAMP, all bars carried only weight and purity stamps. The design depicts the Roman goddess of fortune blindfolded, holding a cornucopia overflowing with gold coins, flanked by sheaves of wheat, poppies, and a wheel of fortune.

At kilo weight, the Fortuna commands a brand premium over generic or lesser-known refiner bars. That premium buys three things: the strongest brand recognition in the minted bar market, PAMP's VeriScan authentication technology, and the tamper-evident CertiPAMP assay packaging. These features make the Fortuna easier to resell at or near its purchase premium than bars from less well-known refiners, where the brand component of the premium is typically unrecoverable.

The kilo format contains 32.15 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. PAMP is LBMA-accredited (London Bullion Market Association) and part of MKS PAMP GROUP, a vertically integrated precious metals company. The bar is minted (struck, not cast), producing the sharp relief and mirror-like finish that defines the Fortuna line. Each bar carries a unique serial number engraved on the reverse.

For buyers choosing between the 1 oz Fortuna and this kilo bar, the premium difference is substantial. Smaller PAMP bars carry percentage premiums of 8-15% or more over spot; at kilo weight, the premium drops to the 3-6% range that is standard for large-format silver. The brand premium narrows significantly at larger sizes, making the kilo the most cost-efficient way to own the Fortuna design in silver.

The Fortuna range spans gold (.9999 fine), silver (.999 fine), platinum (.9995 fine), palladium (.9995 fine), and rhodium. Silver Fortuna bars are available from 2.5 g through 1 kilogram, with common retail sizes being 1 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg. Specific dimensions for the kilo silver bar were not published in the sources consulted.

VeriScan Authentication

VeriScan is PAMP's patented digital authentication system. Each bar's microscopic surface topography is scanned and recorded in PAMP's secure database at manufacture. Buyers can verify authenticity via the PAMP VeriScan smartphone app or PC software with a document scanner. The surface profile is matched against the database to confirm the bar is genuine. Because VeriScan reads the bar's physical surface rather than the packaging, it can verify authenticity even if the bar has been removed from its assay card.

CertiPAMP Packaging

The tamper-evident sealed packaging integrates an assay certificate stating weight, purity, serial number, and the assayer's mark. The packaging includes microprinting and UV-reactive elements. Breaking the seal is detectable and may reduce resale value, as buyers purchasing sealed bars avoid the cost of independent re-assay.

Tax Treatment for the PAMP Suisse Fortuna Kilo Silver Bar

United Kingdom

Silver bars attract 20% VAT on purchase, regardless of manufacturer or brand. On disposal, capital gains tax applies at 18-24% (£3,000 annual exemption). PAMP silver bars are not UK legal tender and therefore have no CGT exemption. Gold PAMP bars, by contrast, are VAT-free in the UK (investment gold from an LBMA-accredited refiner at 995+ purity qualifies), though they still attract CGT.

United States

No federal sales tax. Approximately 35 states exempt investment-grade silver from state sales tax. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% for long-term holdings, plus potential 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax. PAMP Fortuna silver bars at .999 purity from an LBMA-accredited refiner meet IRS requirements for precious metals IRAs when held by an approved custodian.

Switzerland

PAMP's home market. Silver bars carry 8.1% VAT in Switzerland. Gold bars are VAT-free. PAMP bars purchased and stored in Swiss vaults benefit from the country's favourable storage and regulatory environment.

European Union

Silver bars are subject to standard VAT rates across the EU (19-27% depending on country). Some countries permit margin scheme (differential taxation) on second-hand silver, notably Germany (Differenzbesteuerung, effective ~7% on used bars) and the Netherlands (margeregeling for pre-owned coins). New silver bars from refiners typically attract full VAT.

Canada

Investment-grade silver bullion at 99.9% purity or above is exempt from GST/HST. The Fortuna at .999 qualifies. Capital gains are taxed at a 50% inclusion rate.

Australia and New Zealand

Investment-grade silver at 99.9% purity from an accredited refiner is GST-free in Australia (10% GST) and GST-exempt in New Zealand (15% GST). The Fortuna at .999 qualifies in both countries. Australia applies CGT with a 50% discount after 12 months; New Zealand has no formal CGT.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore exempts qualifying silver bars (99.9% purity, LBMA-accredited refiner) from 9% GST under the Investment Precious Metals scheme. No capital gains tax. Hong Kong has no sales tax, no import duty, and no CGT.

Fortuna vs Other Premium Kilo Silver Bars

The Fortuna's closest competitor in the premium minted bar segment is the 1 Kilo Geiger Edelmetalle Geiger Original. Both carry brand premiums above generic kilo bars, and both offer distinctive security features. Geiger uses UV-reactive coating, reeded edges, high-relief pearl finish, and serialisation. PAMP uses VeriScan digital fingerprinting and CertiPAMP packaging. The Geiger's square format and baroque castle design give it a visually distinctive character; the Fortuna's Lady Fortuna motif is the more widely recognised design globally. In terms of resale, PAMP's broader international distribution gives it an edge in most markets outside Germany.

Against a 1 Kilo Heraeus silver bar, the Fortuna trades at a higher premium. Heraeus is also LBMA-accredited and German-manufactured, but its bar design is more institutional and functional. Heraeus bars are popular in Europe and offer excellent liquidity at lower entry cost. For investors focused on maximising silver weight per pound or dollar spent, Heraeus offers better value. For those who value brand recognition and resale premium retention, the Fortuna justifies the extra cost.

Valcambi, another Swiss LBMA refiner, produces kilo silver bars at lower premiums than PAMP. Valcambi's innovation is the CombiBar (pre-scored bars that can be broken into smaller units), though this is more relevant at smaller weights. At kilo weight, the practical distinction between Valcambi and PAMP is brand strength and authentication technology. PAMP's VeriScan has no equivalent in the Valcambi line.

For pure cost efficiency at kilo weight, bars from JBR Recovery or Johnson Matthey typically trade at tighter premiums. The trade-off is lower brand recognition and, in JBR Recovery's case, a smaller international resale market.
