About the 20g MMTC-PAMP Lakshmi Ganesh Silver Bar

The 20g MMTC-PAMP Lakshmi Ganesh Silver Bar

This small silver bar comes from MMTC-PAMP, the 2008 joint venture between MMTC Ltd., a Government of India undertaking, and Switzerland's MKS PAMP SA, owner of the PAMP Suisse brand. The refinery at Mewat, Haryana is India's first and only LBMA-accredited Good Delivery refiner for both gold and silver, with capacity for 600+ tonnes of silver a year, and in April 2026 it won Best Silver Refinery and Minted Products Manufacturer at the India Silver Conference. The Lakshmi Ganesh theme is one of its signature lines, pairing Goddess Lakshmi (wealth and prosperity) with Lord Ganesha (new beginnings, remover of obstacles), the two deities most associated with financial auspiciousness in Hinduism.

The line exists primarily for gifting. Demand peaks around Dhanteras and Diwali, when buying gold and silver is considered auspicious, and the bars are also popular for weddings, engagements, and religious ceremonies. At 20 grams, the silver content keeps the price accessible for a present while the LBMA pedigree, tamper-proof Certicard packaging, and serial numbering give it credibility that ordinary gift silver lacks. MMTC-PAMP applies NIL negative weight and purity tolerance, meaning the customer always receives at least the stated weight and purity.

Outside India the product occupies a niche: diaspora buyers in the UK, US, Singapore, and the Middle East purchase it for cultural and religious reasons rather than as pure stacking, since small silver bars carry proportionally high premiums relative to their metal value.

The silver Lakshmi Ganesh range spans 10g, 20g, 25g, 50g, and 100g pieces in several forms: plain bars, coloured bars with printed colour detail over the deity images, and coins, with some pieces sold as matched pairs (a 25g Lakshmi and 25g Ganesh in a single 50g package). Stylised versions use a more contemporary geometric art style, and some products feature raised-relief 3D detail on the deity figures.

Every piece carries individual assay certification, and opening the Certicard destroys the tamper-evident seal, so bars should stay sealed for resale. MMTC-PAMP's purity credentials are unusually strong for the Indian market: the company supplies the gold reference materials used as purity benchmarks by hallmarking centres across India, and its sealed packaging underpins a guaranteed buyback programme through authorised dealers and jewellers.

Tax Treatment of MMTC-PAMP Silver Bars by Country

  • India: The primary market. 3% GST applies to gold and silver bullion. The bars are sold through banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI), Amazon India, Flipkart, jewellers, and MMTC-PAMP's own shop, with buyback widely available.
  • UK: Silver bars attract 20% VAT on new purchases unless sold pre-owned under the margin scheme, and as non-legal-tender bars they are also subject to Capital Gains Tax. The UK market for these is a niche served by specialist dealers, primarily for the British Indian community.
  • US: No federal sales tax; most states exempt bullion. Long-term gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%. Availability is limited, as major US dealers do not typically stock the line, and IRA eligibility is unclear because MMTC-PAMP is not a COMEX/NYMEX-approved refiner.
  • Singapore: Silver at 99.9%+ purity qualifies for the Investment Precious Metals GST exemption, and there is no capital gains tax.
  • Canada: Silver refined to 99.9%+ purity in bar form is GST/HST exempt.
  • UAE: 0% VAT on investment silver bullion and no CGT; the large Indian expatriate community drives demand through gold souks and dealers.

MMTC-PAMP Lakshmi Ganesh vs Indian Refiners and PAMP Suisse

Within India, MMTC-PAMP's main differentiator against other refiners such as Kundan, Tanishq, and RSBL is LBMA accreditation; no other Indian refiner holds it for both gold and silver, which translates into guaranteed international acceptance and buyback. Against generic BIS-hallmarked silver, the comparison is about tolerance: hallmarking certifies purity but not weight tolerance, while MMTC-PAMP's NIL negative tolerance guarantees both. Against Tanishq specifically, a Tata-group jewellery brand that also sells precious metal coins, MMTC-PAMP offers 999.9 purity with LBMA backing that Tanishq lacks.

The other natural comparison is the parent brand. PAMP Suisse produces its own Lakshmi bar in gold as part of the Faith Series, featuring Lakshmi only, where the MMTC-PAMP line depicts both Lakshmi and Ganesha and includes distinctive shankh (conch shell) shaped pieces, a form sacred in Hinduism through its association with Vishnu. PAMP Suisse bars carry the Lady Fortuna pedigree and a higher premium internationally, while MMTC-PAMP products are priced more competitively in the Indian domestic market.

For buyers outside India weighing this bar against mainstream Western silver, the decision is cultural rather than financial. A 20g bar is a gift format; stackers buying silver by weight get materially better value from 10 oz or kilo bars, where premiums compress and dealer liquidity is deepest.
