About the 50g Buddha Silver Bar

The PAMP Suisse Buddha in 50 Gram Silver

The 50g PAMP Suisse Buddha silver bar belongs to the Faith series, a five-design collection from the Swiss refinery that celebrates major world religions through bullion. The Buddha design depicts Siddhartha Gautama seated in the lotus position with rays of enlightenment radiating outward, drawing on classical Theravada and Mahayana artistic traditions. It is one of the more visually striking bars in PAMP's catalogue and carries particular cultural significance for the estimated 500 million adherents of Buddhism worldwide.

PAMP (Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux) operates from Castel San Pietro in Ticino, Switzerland, and holds LBMA Good Delivery accreditation along with Swiss National Bank accreditation. The 50g weight sits at a practical point in the metric bar range: large enough that manufacturing premiums become a smaller fraction of the metal value, yet accessible enough for regular accumulation. At 999 fine silver, the bar meets the purity thresholds for GST and tax exemptions in most jurisdictions outside the UK and EU.

Each bar is individually serial-numbered and sealed in PAMP's CertiPAMP tamper-evident assay packaging, which certifies weight, purity, and metal content. The assay card is signed by a certified assayer and forms part of the authentication chain. PAMP's "ESSAYEUR FONDEUR" marking on the reverse is a legally controlled Swiss designation confirming production by a registered Swiss precious metals refiner.

The Faith series is one of the few bullion product lines to systematically represent multiple world religions. The five designs are the Buddha (Buddhism), Romanesque Cross (Christianity), Ka'Bah (Islam), Lakshmi (Hinduism), and Am Yisrael Chai (Judaism). This breadth makes the series popular as culturally meaningful gifts across different communities, and the 50g size is large enough to carry real metal value while remaining practical as a presentation piece.

The obverse features Siddhartha Gautama in the lotus position (padmasana) with radiating rays of knowledge, drawing on classical Theravada and Mahayana artistic traditions. The reverse carries the standard PAMP Suisse hallmark with the circular PAMP logo, weight, purity marking, "ESSAYEUR FONDEUR" designation, and unique serial number. The design has remained consistent since the series launch with no annual variations.

Note that PAMP produces a separate "Lucky Buddha" bar depicting a laughing Budai figure. That is a distinct product from the Faith series Buddha, which shows the historical Siddhartha Gautama in traditional meditation pose. The Faith series is available in gold (.9999 fine) and silver (.999 fine) across multiple weights from 5g to 1 oz. Silver bars at 50g use the standard PAMP minting process, producing sharp relief and clean detail across the full design surface.

Tax Treatment for the 50g PAMP Buddha Silver Bar

As a silver bar (not legal tender in any jurisdiction), the 50g PAMP Buddha carries the standard silver bullion tax treatment in each country. Silver is taxed less favourably than gold in most regions.

Purchase Tax

  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT on purchase. Silver bars receive no VAT exemption. Some UK dealers offer VAT-free vault storage overseas, but taking physical delivery triggers the full 20%.
  • United States: No federal sales tax. Approximately 35 states exempt investment-grade silver bullion from state sales tax. States that still tax include Hawaii, Maine, Vermont, and Washington. Exemption thresholds apply in California (over $2,000), Florida (over $500), and New York (over $1,000).
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt for silver bullion at 99.9% purity or higher. The 999 fine PAMP Buddha qualifies.
  • Australia: GST-free for investment-grade silver at 99.9% purity from accredited refiners. The 999 purity meets this threshold.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt for fine silver at 99.9% purity or higher.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals (IPM) scheme for silver bars at 99.9% purity from LBMA-accredited refiners.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty.
  • EU: Full local VAT rate applies to silver bars (17% to 27% depending on country). Germany's margin scheme (Differenzbesteuerung) may reduce effective VAT on pre-owned silver.
  • South Africa: 15% VAT on silver bullion. No exemption for silver bars.

Capital Gains and Disposal

  • UK: Subject to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) at 18-24%. Bars have no legal tender status and therefore no CGT exemption.
  • US: Taxed as a collectible at a maximum 28% long-term capital gains rate. Short-term gains taxed as ordinary income.
  • Canada: 50% of capital gains included in taxable income.
  • Australia: Subject to CGT with a 50% discount for holdings over 12 months.
  • Singapore and Hong Kong: No capital gains tax.
  • South Africa: 40% inclusion rate for individuals.

Retirement Accounts

In the US, PAMP silver bars at 999 fine purity from an LBMA-accredited refiner meet IRS Section 408(m) requirements for inclusion in a self-directed Precious Metals IRA, provided they are held by an approved custodian. In the UK, physical silver is not eligible for SIPPs or ISAs. Canadian RRSP and TFSA eligibility applies to qualifying silver bullion meeting purity and custodian requirements.

PAMP Buddha vs Other 50g Silver Bars

The 50g silver bar market is dominated by PAMP Suisse designs and a handful of other Swiss and European refiners. The Buddha bar competes primarily with its siblings in the Faith series and with PAMP's more widely traded Fortuna design.

The 50g PAMP Fortuna silver bar is the most liquid PAMP bar at this weight, with more dealers stocking it and tighter buy-sell spreads on the secondary market. Both bars are 999 fine, individually serialised, and sealed in CertiPAMP assay packaging. The difference is purely aesthetic: the Fortuna carries the Lady Fortuna motif (the Roman goddess of fortune with cornucopia), and the Buddha carries the Siddhartha Gautama meditation design. For buyers prioritising resale efficiency, the Fortuna is the safer choice. For buyers who value the Buddhist cultural connection or are purchasing the bar as a gift, the Buddha design justifies any additional premium.

The 50g Valcambi silver bar offers a lower-premium alternative from another LBMA-accredited Swiss refiner. Valcambi bars carry a more utilitarian design and tend to trade closer to spot price. They lack the CertiPAMP packaging and VeriScan authentication (though VeriScan is not available on the Buddha bar either), but they are globally recognised and liquid. For pure value-per-gram, Valcambi is typically the better option.

The 50g Geiger Original silver bar from Germany offers a different approach entirely: a distinctive square format with UV-reactive security coating, reeded edges, and high-relief surface detail. Geiger bars carry premiums comparable to PAMP and appeal to collectors who prize the elaborate security features. The Geiger Original is the strongest competitor in terms of craftsmanship and collectibility, though it lacks the religious-cultural appeal of the Faith series.

Among the other Faith series siblings at 50g, the 50g Ka'Bah Mecca bar and the 50g PAMP Rosa bar share identical specifications, security features, and packaging. The choice between Faith series designs is entirely personal and cultural. All carry similar premiums and secondary-market liquidity.

50g Buddha Silver Bar: frequently asked questions

The Buddha bar is part of PAMP Suisse's Faith series, which features five designs representing major world religions: Buddha (Buddhism), the Romanesque Cross (Christianity), the Ka'bah (Islam), Lakshmi (Hinduism), and the Am Yisrael Chai motif (Judaism). The obverse depicts Siddhartha Gautama seated in the lotus position with rays of light radiating outward. The series is produced in both gold and silver across multiple weights.
The bar is 999 fine silver, with a gross weight of 50g. Because purity is .999 and the bar is sold by gross weight (not fine weight separately), 50g of gross weight is 50g of fine silver content. Each bar is individually serial-numbered and sealed in a CertiPAMP tamper-evident assay card.
A 50g minted silver bar is a compact, palm-sized piece. At 50g, it is noticeably heavier than a 1 oz (31.1g) bar, making the weight immediately apparent in hand. The slim minted profile fits easily in standard capsules and storage tubes designed for the format.
