About the 1 oz Big 5 Silver Coin
South African Mint Big 5 Silver Bullion
The 1 oz South African Mint Big 5 silver coin is part of South Africa's premier wildlife bullion programme, announced at the World Money Fair in Berlin in February 2019. The series features Africa's five most iconic large animals: elephant, lion, rhinoceros, leopard, and Cape buffalo. A new animal design is released approximately every six months, with the full cycle repeating across multiple series (Series I ran 2019-2021, Series II from 2021-2023, and Series III from 2024 onwards).
The Brilliant Uncirculated silver coins at .999 fine purity represent the most accessible entry point into the Big 5 programme. They carry a 5 Rand face value as legal tender of South Africa, backed by the South African Reserve Bank through its subsidiary the South African Mint, the same institution that produces the Gold Krugerrand. Mintages for the BU silver versions are controlled at 10,000-15,000 per design, positioning them between unlimited bullion and tightly capped proof editions.
The series' signature design element is the "split face" concept: each coin shows two halves of the animal's face placed at opposite edges. When two coins from the same series are aligned side by side, the complete animal portrait emerges. This "herd effect" is unique among modern bullion programmes and encourages collecting multiple coins from the same release cycle.
Series III (2024 onwards) introduced a Cape honey bee micro-engraving as both an ecological symbol and anti-counterfeiting feature, adding a layer of security absent from earlier issues.

Extended Programme
Beyond the 1 oz silver BU, the Big 5 programme extends to gold (.9999 fine, 50 Rand face value, mintage 500 per design) and platinum (.9995 fine, 50 Rand, mintage 500). Large format coins (5 oz and 1 kg) were introduced in Series II, described as Africa's first coins of this size produced by a mint on the continent. Proof silver versions are issued as two-coin sets where paired halves create the complete animal portrait. The 2024 Series III proof silver elephant set was limited to just 3,000 sets worldwide.
Additional sizes include 1/4 oz gold and silver (mintage approximately 2,000 for gold), 1/2 oz silver, and 2 oz silver proof (mintage approximately 1,000). This range of sizes and metals makes the Big 5 one of the most comprehensive wildlife coin programmes currently in production.
Big 5 Tax Treatment by Country
South Africa
The Big 5 coins are legal tender of South Africa. Gold Krugerrands are VAT-exempt under s11(1)(k) of the Value-Added Tax Act, but this zero-rating applies specifically to gold coins issued by the South African Reserve Bank. The Big 5 silver coins do not benefit from the same zero-rating. However, as legal tender coins denominated in Rand, silver Big Five coins are reportedly not classified as assets for CGT purposes in South Africa, offering a tax advantage not available on silver bars.
United Kingdom
Gold Big 5 coins (.9999 purity, legal tender of a recognised sovereign state) are VAT-exempt as investment gold. Silver coins attract 20% VAT. The coins are not UK legal tender, so any capital gains on disposal are subject to CGT at the individual's rate. The margin scheme may apply when purchasing pre-owned from VAT-registered dealers.
United States
The .999 fine silver versions meet the IRS Section 408(m) purity threshold for IRA inclusion (99.9% for silver). However, the Big 5 series is not universally listed on custodian approved lists given its relatively recent introduction and proof-collector positioning. State sales tax varies. Capital gains are taxed at the federal collectibles rate of up to 28% for long-term holdings.
European Union
Gold Big 5 coins meeting EU Gold Directive criteria (legal tender, post-1800, 900+ fineness) are VAT-exempt. Silver is subject to standard VAT rates (19% Germany, 20% France, 21% Netherlands). German Differenzbesteuerung may apply to pre-owned coins.
Canada and Australia
Silver at .999 purity exceeds Canada's 99.9% threshold for GST/HST exemption. Australia requires 99.9% for silver GST exemption, which .999 meets.
Big 5 vs Other Wildlife Silver Coins
Versus the Krugerrand
The Silver Krugerrand is South Africa's established bullion coin with wider dealer recognition, higher production volumes, and lower premiums. The Big 5 carries controlled mintages (10,000-15,000 vs the Krugerrand's essentially unlimited production) and collectible positioning. For pure silver accumulation, the Krugerrand offers better value. For collectors who want annual design variety and lower mintage figures from the same sovereign mint, the Big 5 fills a distinct role.
Versus the Somalia Elephant
The 1oz Somalia Elephant from the Bavarian State Mint shares the African wildlife theme with annual design changes. The Somalia Elephant has higher annual production (130,000+), wider availability, and typically lower premiums. The Big 5 offers unambiguous sovereign backing (South African Reserve Bank subsidiary), a more controlled mintage, and the unique split-face design concept. The Somalia Elephant's contested legal tender status contrasts with the Big 5's clear sovereign legitimacy.
Versus Perth Mint Australian Wildlife
Perth Mint's Kookaburra and Koala series follow a similar annual-design model. Perth offers .9999 purity (versus Big 5's .999) and larger mintages, typically resulting in lower premiums and better secondary market liquidity outside Africa. However, the Big 5's African theme and lower mintages provide stronger collector premiums on older issues.
Versus Private Mint African Wildlife
The 1oz Cameroon Cheetah from Scottsdale Mint offers African wildlife themes from a private mint at lower premiums. The Big 5's advantage is its genuine sovereign backing, controlled mintages, and the artistic split-face concept that sets it apart visually from all competitors.

No. Cleaning silver coins almost always reduces their value by leaving micro-scratches on the surface and stripping the natural toning that develops over time. Collectors and dealers typically pay less for cleaned coins because the original mint lustre cannot be restored. If a Big 5 coin needs attention, rinse gently with distilled water only, allow to air-dry without rubbing, and store in a protective capsule.

Tax treatment depends on your country. In the UK, silver bullion coins attract 20% VAT regardless of legal-tender status; UK CGT applies on gains above the £3,000 annual allowance, at 18% or 24% depending on your income. In Canada, investment-grade silver is GST-free at 0%, and 50% of any capital gain is included in taxable income. In Australia, investment silver is also GST-free at 0%.
