About the 1 oz Call of the Wild Silver Coin
RCM Call of the Wild 1oz Silver
The 1 oz Royal Canadian Mint Call of the Wild silver coin adapts the celebrated gold bullion series into the more accessible silver format. The Call of the Wild programme originally ran from 2014 to 2020 as a seven-coin gold series, famous for being struck in 99.999% pure gold (five nines), the highest commercially available purity. The silver counterparts bring the same Canadian predatory wildlife themes to silver bullion, featuring animals depicted mid-vocalisation: howling wolves, growling cougars, roaring grizzlies, shrieking eagles.
The complete series of seven animals spans Canadian wildlife habitats: the Howling Wolf (Arctic/boreal), Growling Cougar (mountain), Roaring Grizzly (mountain), Crowned Elk (forest), Shrieking Golden Eagle (prairie/sky), Majestic Moose (forest), and Bobcat (mixed habitat). Each design by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc captures the animal at its most powerful and vocal moment, with stylised sound wave lines emanating from the mouth to suggest the vocalisation.
As Royal Canadian Mint products, these coins carry the RCM's standard security features: micro-engraved maple leaf with year digits and the proprietary Bullion DNA authentication system. They are Canadian legal tender and qualify for tax-advantaged treatment across multiple jurisdictions. The .9999 silver purity (some variants at .99999) exceeds the threshold requirements for Canadian RRSP, US IRA, and Australian GST-free classification.
The series concluded with the 2020 Bobcat, making it a finite, complete seven-coin set. No further issues are planned, meaning secondary market supply is fixed. Complete sets command premiums above the sum of individual coins.

Security and Authentication
The RCM's Bullion DNA system encodes an encrypted registration code within a privy mark on each coin. This code can be verified using authorised DNA Bullion readers, providing a level of counterfeit protection that goes beyond visual inspection. The micro-engraved maple leaf containing the last two digits of the mintage year is visible only under magnification. These features are shared with the Maple Leaf, giving dealers a familiar authentication process for all RCM bullion.
All seven coins carry the Queen Elizabeth II portrait, as the series concluded before the 2022 transition to King Charles III on Canadian coinage. This makes the Call of the Wild a complete Elizabeth II-era series.
Call of the Wild Tax Treatment
Canada
Canadian legal tender at .9999 fine silver. GST/HST-exempt as investment-grade precious metal (exceeds the 99.9% purity threshold). RRSP-eligible through approved dealers, providing tax-deferred growth. TFSA-eligible for tax-free capital gains.
United States
IRA-eligible. The .9999 purity far exceeds the IRS Section 408(m) requirement of 99.9% for silver. RCM coins are generally accepted by IRA custodians. Sales tax varies by state, with approximately 35 states exempting precious metals purchases. Capital gains taxed at the federal collectibles rate of up to 28% for long-term holdings.
United Kingdom
VAT-free on gold versions (investment gold). Silver versions attract 20% VAT on purchase. Not UK legal tender, so CGT applies to any profit on disposal. Available through specialist dealers importing from North America.
European Union
Gold versions VAT-exempt under the EU investment gold directive. Silver subject to local VAT rates (19% Germany, 20% France, 21% Netherlands). German Differenzbesteuerung may apply to pre-owned specimens.
Australia
GST-free on first supply as investment-grade precious metal (.9999 purity exceeds the 99.9% threshold for silver).
Singapore and Hong Kong
Singapore exempts silver meeting the IPM (Investment Precious Metals) criteria: 99.9%+ purity in qualifying form. Hong Kong has no sales tax or import duty on precious metals.
Call of the Wild vs Other RCM Silver
Versus the Silver Maple Leaf
The 1oz Silver Maple Leaf is the RCM's core bullion product with the lowest premiums, widest dealer recognition, and deepest liquidity. Call of the Wild carries collector premiums due to its finite series structure (concluded 2020), annual wildlife designs, and limited availability. For pure silver accumulation at minimum cost, the Maple Leaf wins. For a collecting dimension alongside metal value, Call of the Wild offers a complete seven-coin set with a cohesive artistic vision.
Versus Perth Mint Wildlife
Perth Mint's Kookaburra and Lunar series offer annual design changes with collector appeal at .9999 purity. Perth coins carry Australian legal tender status but are not CGT-exempt in the UK (same as Call of the Wild). Perth has a longer track record of annual-design series and broader secondary market infrastructure. Call of the Wild's advantage is its finite nature: seven coins and done, creating a completable set rather than an open-ended collecting commitment.
Versus the Gold Call of the Wild
The gold Call of the Wild is struck at .99999 (five nines), the highest gold purity commercially available. Only a handful of facilities worldwide can refine to this standard. The gold versions carry a CAD $200 face value (the highest face value ever assigned to a 1oz gold bullion coin by any sovereign mint) and trade at collector premiums above standard gold bullion. The silver versions offer the same designs at far lower price points, making the wildlife themes accessible without the gold premium positioning.
