About the 1 oz Congo Silverback Gorilla Silver Coin

Scottsdale Mint's African Wildlife Bullion Coin

The 1 oz Congo Silverback Gorilla is an annual legal tender silver coin struck by Scottsdale Mint (Phoenix, Arizona) under licence from the Republic of Congo. Launched in 2015, the series ran for nine consecutive years before being placed on hiatus after 2023, with each year featuring a new artistic interpretation of a silverback gorilla in a different pose or emotional register.

The debut 2015 coin had a mintage of 50,000, which proved insufficient for demand. From 2016 onwards, Scottsdale Mint standardised production at 75,000 pieces for the 1 oz silver BU. These mintages are substantially lower than mainstream sovereign bullion but comparable to other limited-run African wildlife series. The coins are struck in .999 fine silver and denominated in Congolese Francs (5,000 CFA), with the Republic of Congo coat of arms (featuring two elephants flanking a central shield) on the obverse.

The design alternates between aggressive and gentle portrayals of the gorilla. The 2015 debut showed a roaring male with teeth exposed. The 2018 coin took a docile approach. The 2023 finale depicted an adult silverback tenderly embracing its offspring, the most emotionally resonant design in the series. This willingness to explore different facets of the animal sets the Congo Gorilla apart from wildlife coin series that default to the same dramatic pose year after year.

Eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei) are critically endangered, with only about 1,000 mountain gorillas remaining in the wild. The series carries conservation awareness alongside its investment appeal, and the thematic pairing of the gorilla reverse with the elephant-bearing coat of arms gives both sides of the coin an African megafauna identity.

In addition to the standard 1 oz silver BU, the series has been produced in several variant formats. Coloured editions (starting with a mintage of 2,500 in 2016) add selective colour printing to the gorilla design. A 1 kg silver coin has been issued in certain years for the collector and large-investor market. From 2021-2022, gold variants were introduced: a 1 oz gold proof (just 100 pieces) and a 1/10 oz gold BU (1,000 pieces at .9999 fine gold). The 1 oz gold proof, with its mintage of 100, is one of the lowest-mintage gold coins available from any sovereign programme.

It is worth noting that the Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) should not be confused with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo-Kinshasa). Some dealer listings incorrectly reference the DRC, but the issuing authority is the smaller Republic of Congo.

Congo Silverback Gorilla Tax Treatment by Country

The Congo Silverback Gorilla is legal tender of the Republic of Congo, denominated in CFA Francs. Its tax treatment depends on the buyer's jurisdiction and the specific metal version.

United Kingdom

Silver versions are subject to 20% VAT on purchase. The coin is not UK legal tender, so it is not CGT-exempt on disposal. Capital gains are taxed at the individual's rate (18% basic, 24% higher), subject to the annual CGT allowance. Gold versions qualify as investment gold (VAT-exempt) due to their .9999 purity and legal tender status. UK buyers seeking CGT exemption on silver should consider the 1 oz Silver Britannia, which is CGT-exempt as UK legal tender.

United States

The primary market for the Congo Gorilla. The .999 silver purity meets the IRS Section 408(m) requirement for IRA eligibility (silver must be 99.9%+ pure). Gold versions at .9999 also qualify. Sales tax treatment varies by state, with approximately 35 states exempting bullion from state sales tax. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% for long-term holdings.

Canada

Silver at .999 purity meets the 99.5% threshold for GST/HST exemption. Gold at .9999 also qualifies. The coins are GST/HST-exempt on purchase.

European Union

Gold versions are VAT-exempt as investment gold across all EU member states. Silver versions are subject to the standard VAT rate of the buyer's country (19% in Germany, 21% in the Netherlands, up to 27% in Hungary). Germany's margin scheme may apply to pre-owned silver coins.

Australia and New Zealand

Silver at .999 purity meets the investment-grade threshold for GST exemption in both Australia (99.9%+ required) and New Zealand (99.9%+ required). No GST applies to qualifying purchases.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore exempts silver at 99.9%+ purity from its 9% GST under the Investment Precious Metals scheme. Hong Kong has no sales tax or capital gains tax on bullion of any kind.

Congo Gorilla vs Other African Wildlife Silver Coins

The African wildlife niche in silver bullion is well populated, and the Congo Gorilla competes directly with several established series for collector and investor attention.

The 1 oz Somalia Silver Elephant, struck by the Bavarian State Mint, has run since 2004 and enjoys stronger brand recognition and greater liquidity. Somalia Elephant mintages are effectively unlimited in many years, keeping premiums closer to spot. The Congo Gorilla trades at higher premiums but offers tighter mintages (75,000 vs unlimited) and a more focused thematic identity: one animal explored through different artistic interpretations each year, rather than the same animal in the same general style.

The Rwandan Wildlife series (struck by BH Mayer) rotates through different animals annually, providing variety but lacking the consistent thematic thread of the Gorilla. The Congo Gorilla's commitment to a single species allows deeper artistic exploration across the series.

Scottsdale Mint also produces the 1 oz Barbados Trident, a fellow sovereign programme from the same facility. The Trident has a cleaner, more abstract design and a different market position, but both share Scottsdale's production quality and BU/Proof-Like finishing standards.

Compared to mainstream sovereign bullion from the Australian Kangaroo or Canadian Maple Leaf programmes, the Congo Gorilla commands higher premiums per ounce. The tradeoff is collectibility: the fixed mintage and annual design changes create genuine secondary market value for older dates, particularly the 2015 debut (50,000 mintage) and coloured editions. For buyers stacking silver purely for metal content at the lowest cost, sovereign coins from high-volume mints remain more efficient. The Congo Gorilla serves the buyer who values the intersection of bullion investment and collectible design in a limited-production format.
