About the 1 oz Zebra Seahorse Silver Coin

Scottsdale Mint's Long-Running Samoan Seahorse Series

The 1 oz Zebra Seahorse is the 2025 release in the Samoa Seahorse series, an annual silver bullion programme struck by Scottsdale Mint (Arizona, USA) and issued as legal tender of Samoa with a face value of 2 Tala. The series launched in 2018 and has produced a new seahorse design every year, making the 2025 coin the eighth in the programme. Each year features a different seahorse species or design composition, with the 2025 release depicting the Zebra Seahorse (Hippocampus zebra), a small species (approximately 10 cm in length) characterised by alternating dark and light bands, endemic to the waters of northern Australia.

The coin is struck in .999 fine silver at the standard 1 oz bullion weight, with a diameter of approximately 38.8-39 mm. Two finishes are available: Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) with a 10,000 standard mintage and 249 Alpha Strike variants, and Antique with a 1,000 standard mintage and 49 Alpha Strike variants. Alpha Strike coins, introduced in 2023, are the first pieces struck when a new die is put into service, individually serialised and packaged with numbered certificates. The standard BU version is the primary bullion offering, while the Antique finish and Alpha Strikes serve the collector market at significantly higher premiums.

The Scottsdale Mint lion hallmark appears on each coin, and the obverse carries the Samoan coat of arms with weight, purity, year, and denomination inscriptions. The reverse designs change entirely each year rather than iteratively, with past highlights including the 2020 release's Hokusai-inspired wave composition and the 2024 dual-seahorse yin-yang design. The series has built a dedicated collector following despite originating from a small Pacific island nation with no mint of its own.

The Antique finish involves artificially ageing the coin's surface during the minting process to create a weathered, matte appearance. This is not natural tarnish but a deliberate patina applied for aesthetic effect, popular with collectors who prefer a textured look over the mirror-bright surfaces of standard bullion. The Alpha Strike designation indicates coins struck with the first use of a new die, when the impression is at its sharpest and most detailed. These are individually serialised with numbered certificates and packaged separately from the standard run. Earlier years in the series followed similar structures, with the Antique finish introduced in 2019 and Alpha Strike variants added from 2023.

Zebra Seahorse Tax Treatment by Country

The Samoa Seahorse's tax treatment is determined by its .999 purity, legal tender status in Samoa, and the relevant jurisdiction's rules for foreign silver bullion coins.

United Kingdom

Silver bullion in the UK is subject to 20% VAT. The Seahorse is available from UK dealers such as Atkinsons Bullion, and may be sold under the VAT margin scheme for pre-owned or imported coins, reducing the effective VAT to the dealer's margin. The coin is not UK legal tender and therefore not CGT-exempt. Capital gains on disposal are taxed at the standard rate (18-24%) with a £3,000 annual allowance. UK buyers seeking CGT-exempt silver should consider the 1 oz Silver Britannia or 1 oz Valiant.

United States

The primary market for this coin. Available from major US dealers including APMEX, JM Bullion, and SD Bullion. State sales tax exemptions vary; approximately 35 states exempt bullion purchases. IRA eligibility is uncertain for the Seahorse: most IRA custodians require coins from widely recognised sovereign mints, and Samoa's issuing authority may not appear on all approved lists. Buyers should verify with their specific custodian before purchasing for retirement accounts. Capital gains are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate.

Australia

The Zebra Seahorse species is native to Australian waters, adding collector interest. Silver bullion at 99.9% purity is GST-free in Australia when it meets the investment-grade definition. Standard CGT applies with a 50% discount for holdings over 12 months.

Other Jurisdictions

  • Canada: GST/HST exempt for silver at 99.9% purity.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt for silver at 99.9% purity. No capital gains tax.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under IPM for qualifying silver at 99.9% purity from recognised issuers.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.
  • EU: Silver subject to local VAT rates.

Seahorse vs Other Annual Wildlife Bullion Series

The Samoa Seahorse's 10,000 BU mintage is dramatically lower than any major sovereign silver coin. The American Silver Eagle typically produces 20-40 million coins per year. The Perth Mint Lunar series runs uncapped. Even niche Perth Mint wildlife coins like the Emu (30,000) and Quokka (30,000) produce three times more than the Seahorse's standard BU run. This scarcity is the defining characteristic of the series and the primary driver of secondary-market premiums on earlier years.

Against the Perth Mint's own dragon-themed or wildlife-themed coins, the Seahorse occupies a different market position. Perth Mint products benefit from global brand recognition, LBMA-accredited refinery provenance, and established dealer networks. The Seahorse relies on Scottsdale Mint's reputation as a respected private US mint and the appeal of its annual design changes, low mintages, and the niche marine biology theme. Perth coins at .9999 purity also have a marginal purity advantage over the Seahorse's .999.

The KOMSCO 1 oz Zi:Sin series is perhaps the closest structural comparison: a non-US contract-minted bullion programme with limited mintages (20,000-40,000), annual design changes, and a defined collecting arc (12 guardians). The Zi:Sin's mintages are higher, its Korean mythology theme targets a different collector audience, and its medal status (denominated in "Clay" rather than a circulating currency) creates different tax treatment in some jurisdictions. Both series appeal to collectors who value low mintage and annual variety over the lowest possible per-ounce premium.

For buyers focused purely on silver content at the lowest cost, the 1 oz Austrian Philharmonic or 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf remain the practical choices. The Seahorse is for collectors who accept a higher per-ounce premium in exchange for low mintage, annual design variety, and a marine biology theme that no other series covers.

1 oz Zebra Seahorse Silver Coin: frequently asked questions

The Zebra Seahorse is a 1 troy oz .999 fine silver bullion coin issued as legal tender of Samoa and struck by Scottsdale Mint in Arizona. It is part of an annual series launched in 2018, with each release featuring a different seahorse species. The 2025 coin depicts the Zebra Seahorse (Hippocampus zebra), a species found in northern Australian waters. Annual mintage is limited, with Brilliant Uncirculated, Antique, and numbered Alpha Strike variants available.
The Zebra Seahorse is legal tender of Samoa, not the UK, so it does not qualify for the UK's CGT exemption that applies to British legal-tender coins. In the UK, gains on silver coins are subject to CGT at 18% or 24% depending on your income. US investors pay up to 28% on precious metals gains; in Canada, 50% of any gain is included in taxable income.
