Icons of Inspiration Silver: frequently asked questions
-
Icons of Inspiration is a Niue-issued series of 1 oz .999 fine silver coins produced by the New Zealand Mint, launched in 2021. Each coin commemorates a historical figure who made a transformative contribution to human civilisation. The BU silver versions have a mintage of 10,000 per figure and carry a face value of $2 NZD, making them legal tender of Niue. Designs are by American coin artist Joel Iskowitz.

Ten figures have been released since 2021: Galileo Galilei and Leonardo da Vinci (2021); Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and the Wright Brothers (2022); Marie Sklodowska-Curie and Thomas Edison (2023); and Johannes Gutenberg, William Shakespeare, and Ludwig van Beethoven (2024). New releases have appeared consistently since launch with no announced end date.

Silver bars generally carry lower premiums over spot than silver coins because they cost less to produce and carry no legal-tender or design licensing costs. Coins like the Icons of Inspiration attract additional premiums for their thematic designs and modest mintages. For pure silver accumulation, bars or high-volume bullion coins often offer a lower cost per ounce; themed coins trade at a middle ground between generic bullion and collector pieces.
