About the Mandrill Silver

Cameroon's Primate Coin from Scottsdale Mint

The Mandrill series features the world's largest monkey species on Republic of Cameroon legal tender coins, struck by Scottsdale Mint in Phoenix, Arizona. Running from 2020 through at least 2022, the series captures the mandrill's distinctive and intensely colourful face in a style that reviewers have described as having "an almost Japanese manga look," with stylised, aggressive depictions of the primate that set it apart from the naturalistic wildlife art typical of sovereign bullion.

The silver BU version, the core bullion offering, is struck in 1 oz .999 fine silver with a 500 CFA Franc face value and mintages of 10,000 to 15,000 pieces. The first-year 2020 release had the higher 15,000 mintage, which was reduced to 10,000 for 2021 and 2022, making the series progressively scarcer. Colourised proof variants (1,500 mintage) add vibrant colour to the mandrill's blue ridges and red nose stripe, and a gold proof (1 oz .9999 fine, just 100 pieces per year) occupies the collector end of the series.

Cameroon is one of only two countries where wild mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) are found, making the subject geographically authentic. Despite their fearsome appearance (large canines, aggressive expressions), mandrills are intensely social animals whose diet is approximately 95% plant matter. Male mandrills have the most colourful faces of any mammal, with the blue and red pigmentation intensifying when the animal is excited or asserting dominance, making them ideal subjects for both the monochrome BU and the colourised variants.

The series follows Scottsdale Mint's Cameroon Cheetah series and sits alongside their Congo Silverback Gorilla as African primate-themed bullion. The 500 CFA Franc denomination places the coin within the Central African CFA franc system (XAF), shared by six nations including Cameroon, though the face value (approximately $0.80 USD) is purely nominal relative to the metal content.

All silver versions have a reeded edge and 3 mm thickness. The BU versions have a proof-like appearance despite the BU designation, with detailed relief work on the mandrill's face that captures the complex facial ridges and musculature characteristic of the species. Gold proof versions ship in a box with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Mintage by Year (Silver BU)

YearMintage
202015,000
202110,000
202210,000

The declining mintage from the inaugural year onward reflects a common pattern for private-mint sovereign series: an initial larger run to establish market presence, followed by tighter production in subsequent years. The design evolves year to year while maintaining the mandrill subject, with the 2022 version featuring a particularly aggressive open-jaw depiction with bared teeth and tongue.

The colourised proof variant is produced in much smaller numbers (1,500 for the 2020 release). Selective colour is applied to highlight the mandrill's distinctive facial markings: the vivid blue ridges running along the nose, the bright red nose stripe, and the orange-gold beard. These are among the most colourful facial markings of any mammal, and the colourisation process reproduces them with reasonable accuracy on the coin surface. The colour adds to the premium over the monochrome BU, which relies on the silver surface and relief work alone to convey the design.

Mandrill Tax Treatment by Country

As Republic of Cameroon legal tender denominated in CFA Francs, the Mandrill coins carry sovereign status. The CFA Franc is the common currency of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC), pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate.

United States

The primary market. Silver at .999 from a government-authorised mint qualifies for IRA inclusion under Section 408(m). Gold at .9999 also qualifies. State sales tax varies by state; roughly 35 states exempt precious metals. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate (maximum 28% long-term) for silver. The coin is available from Scottsdale Mint directly, as well as Provident Metals, Silver.com, and Great Lakes Coin.

United Kingdom

Silver Mandrill coins carry 20% VAT on purchase. They are not UK legal tender and do not qualify for VAT exemption as silver bullion. The gold proof, at .9999 fineness as a legal tender coin, qualifies as VAT-exempt investment gold under the retained EU Investment Gold Directive. Neither version is CGT-exempt. UK dealer availability is limited.

Canada

Silver at .999 purity exceeds the 99.9% threshold for GST/HST exemption. Gold at .9999 also qualifies.

Australia

Investment-grade silver at 99.9%+ purity is GST-exempt. The Mandrill's .999 fineness meets this threshold. Gold at .9999 is also GST-exempt as investment-grade precious metal.

European Union

Gold coins meeting the Investment Gold Directive criteria are VAT-exempt. Silver is subject to the standard VAT rate in each member state (17% to 27%).

Mandrill vs Other African Wildlife Silver Coins

The African wildlife silver coin segment has become crowded, with multiple nations issuing coins through private-mint partnerships. The Mandrill competes on design character and moderate scarcity.

The Congo Silverback Gorilla, also produced by Scottsdale Mint, is the closest comparison. Both feature African primates, both carry CFA Franc denominations from Central African nations, and both come from the same manufacturer. The Gorilla has a significantly higher mintage (75,000 vs 10,000-15,000), broader dealer distribution, and an established collector following. The Mandrill offers lower mintage and a more stylised design approach that diverges from the Gorilla's naturalistic portraiture.

The Somali Elephant operates at a different scale entirely, with effectively unlimited mintage, lower premiums, and global distribution through major dealers. The Elephant is a mass-market bullion coin that competes on price and liquidity. The Mandrill targets buyers willing to pay a modest premium for limited production and distinctive design.

Against sovereign-mint coins like the 1 oz Silver Krugerrand (from South Africa, the continent's only major sovereign mint), the Mandrill trades lower liquidity and recognition for lower mintage and design variety. The Krugerrand carries stronger brand recognition and dealer buyback support worldwide.

The Mandrill's manga-influenced design aesthetic is its most distinctive feature in a market dominated by naturalistic wildlife art. The 2022 version's aggressive open-jaw depiction is particularly striking and has no direct visual equivalent among other African wildlife coins. For collectors who value design distinctiveness over maximum liquidity, the Mandrill series fills a gap that more conventional wildlife coins do not address.

Mandrill Silver: frequently asked questions

Mandrill silver coins are priced against the live silver spot rate of $65.33 per troy ounce, with a premium added for minting and rarity. We track 3 listings across 3 dealers, so you can compare offers directly on this page. Small annual mintages (10,000 to 15,000 coins) mean prices can be firmer than mass-market silver bullion.
The Mandrill is an annual series of 1 oz .999 fine silver coins struck by Scottsdale Mint (Phoenix, Arizona) and issued as legal tender of the Republic of Cameroon, denominated at 500 CFA Francs. Each year features a stylised depiction of the mandrill, the world's largest monkey species and a native of Cameroon's rainforests. The series launched in 2020 and runs in both standard BU and limited colorized proof versions.
The Mandrill is a silver coin, not investment-grade gold, so VAT or GST generally applies in most markets. In the UK, silver coins that are not UK legal tender attract 20%. In Canada, investment-grade silver meeting the 99.9% purity threshold is GST-free. In Germany, silver coins are subject to 19%, though a margin scheme may apply on pre-owned pieces. The Mandrill's Cameroon legal tender status does not confer any VAT benefit outside the CFA zone.
