Masters of Art Silver: frequently asked questions

Masters of Art is an annual series of 2 oz .999 fine silver proof coins produced by CIT Coin Invest (Liechtenstein) and struck at B.H. Mayer's Kunstprageanstalt in Munich. Each release honours a famous Old Master painter by combining the artist's self-portrait with a detail from one of their celebrated works, rendered in full colour using CIT's Smartminting technology. The series launched in 2022 with Vincent van Gogh, followed by Monet (2023) and Renoir (2024).
We track several Masters of Art listings across several dealers on this page. The series has a mintage of 999 pieces per release, so availability at any given time depends on remaining stock from specialist numismatic and collector coin dealers, primarily in Europe.
Capital gains treatment depends on your country. In the UK, gains above the £3,000 annual allowance are taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income band; Masters of Art coins are Cook Islands legal tender but not UK legal tender, so no CGT exemption applies. In Canada, 50% of any capital gain is included in taxable income.
Masters of Art coins trade well above silver spot value due to their low mintage (999 per release), advanced Smartminting production, and colour printing. A standard 2 oz silver bar will carry a much lower premium and track spot more closely. If your goal is affordable silver accumulation, plain bars or standard bullion coins are more cost-efficient. Masters of Art coins appeal to collectors who value the artistic design and limited availability alongside the metal content.
