About the Nikola Tesla Silver

Serbia's Annual Tribute to the Inventor of Modern Electricity

The Nikola Tesla series is an annual 1 oz silver bullion coin issued by the National Bank of Serbia since 2018, honouring the Serbian-American inventor whose alternating current system powers most of the modern world. Each coin carries a permanent Tesla portrait on the obverse and a rotating reverse design showcasing one of his inventions or scientific concepts: alternating current, remote control, X-rays, wireless energy, the Tesla Coil, and more. The coins are struck at the ZIN mint (Zavod za Izradu Novcanica i Kovanog Novca) in Belgrade, a division of the National Bank of Serbia, and carry a face value of 100 Serbian dinara.

The series launched with three planned designs and has expanded significantly, releasing multiple designs per year since 2023. Early mintages were set at 50,000 BU pieces, but later issues appear to have lower production runs, with the 2024 Direct Energy Weapon edition at 10,000 pieces. The thematic progression is notable: the first releases covered Tesla's proven, world-changing inventions (the AC motor, the radio-controlled boat, X-ray photography). Later releases have ventured into his more speculative and controversial concepts (free energy transmission, anti-gravity, directed energy weapons), reflecting both Tesla's biography and growing collector appetite for his "mad scientist" reputation.

The 1 oz Nikola Tesla silver coin is the primary product, with a smaller number of 2 oz coins also available. These sit at the intersection of science and technology enthusiasm and precious metals collecting, appealing to a STEM-oriented audience that most traditional bullion series do not reach.

The obverse design remains consistent across all issues: a left-facing portrait of Tesla inscribed "NIKOLA TESLA" above and "1856-1943" below, with the Serbian coat of arms and "REPUBLIKA SRBIJA" at the top. The rotating reverse designs provide the collectible variety. From 2023, gilded and special finish variants joined the standard BU, expanding the product range for each year's theme.

Tax and Legal Status of Tesla Silver Coins

These coins are official legal tender of the Republic of Serbia with a face value of 100 dinara (approximately USD 0.90 at current exchange rates, purely nominal). The legal tender status has limited practical impact on tax treatment in most buyer jurisdictions.

  • United Kingdom: Silver coins from non-UK, non-EU sovereign mints are subject to 20% VAT. Serbian legal tender status provides no VAT exemption in the UK. Not CGT-exempt (only UK legal tender coins qualify).
  • European Union: Subject to local VAT rates on silver. Some member states apply reduced rates or margin schemes for certain silver coins, but the standard rate (19-27% depending on country) applies in most cases. Serbia's geographic proximity to the EU means these coins are readily available through European dealers.
  • United States: Subject to the federal collectibles capital gains rate of 28% on long-term holdings. State sales tax varies. The .999 purity meets the IRS fineness requirement for silver in precious metals IRAs. NGC-certified versions are available through major US dealers.
  • Canada: Silver at 99.9% purity or above is GST/HST-exempt. The .999 purity qualifies.
  • Australia: Silver at 99.9% purity or above is GST-free. The .999 purity meets this threshold.
  • Singapore: Qualifies as Investment Precious Metal (IPM) at .999 purity. GST-exempt.

Tesla's Inventions on Serbian Silver

The 2018 inaugural coin depicted a prototype of Tesla's alternating current induction motor, the invention that remains the foundation of global electrical infrastructure. Tesla's AC system won the "War of Currents" against Thomas Edison's direct current in the late 19th century, and the AC motor on this coin represents arguably the most consequential invention in the entire series.

The 2019 release commemorated the 120th anniversary of Tesla's US patent 613809A for a radio-controlled boat, demonstrated at Madison Square Garden in 1898. Audience members at the demonstration reportedly accused Tesla of telepathy or of hiding a trained monkey inside the boat, unable to comprehend wireless control. The 2020 coin featured Tesla's "Shadowgraph" X-ray images, among the earliest X-ray photographs ever made. Tesla independently discovered X-ray radiation before Wilhelm Rontgen published his findings.

The 2021 Free Energy coin depicted the Wardenclyffe Tower on Long Island, Tesla's ambitious and never-completed project for wireless energy transmission. From this point, the series shifted toward Tesla's more theoretical and speculative work. The 2023 releases included three themes in a single year: the "Secret of the Universe" (Tesla's fascination with the numbers 3, 6, and 9), the Tesla Coil (his resonant transformer circuit invented in 1891), and Anti-Gravity (his theoretical flying machine concept). The 2024 Direct Energy Weapon references Tesla's "teleforce" concept from the 1930s, popularly known as the "death ray."

Tesla himself was born in 1856 in Smiljan, then part of the Austrian Empire's Military Frontier (now Croatia), to Serbian parents. He emigrated to the United States in 1884, became a naturalised American citizen in 1891, and died in New York in 1943. Both Serbia and Croatia claim him as a cultural figure, but Serbia issues this coin series. His face also appears on the Serbian 100-dinar banknote, making this the rare case where the same historical figure appears on both a country's coins and banknotes at the same denomination.

Tesla Coins vs Other Themed and Regional Silver

Few sovereign bullion programmes honour a specific inventor across multiple annual issues. The Royal Mint's 2024 Alan Turing 50p was a one-off commemorative, not an ongoing series. The Tesla programme's sustained multi-year release schedule, with each year exploring a different invention, gives it a collector-building structure that single-issue coins cannot match.

Against mainstream bullion, the Tesla coins trade at higher premiums than products like the Silver Britannia or Silver Maple Leaf, which benefit from much higher mintages and deeper global dealer networks. The Tesla coins are for buyers willing to pay for the theme and moderate scarcity rather than for the lowest cost per ounce of silver. The 2024 edition's mintage of 10,000 pieces is particularly tight for a bullion coin.

Compared to themed coins from small Pacific island nations (Niue, Tuvalu) that are struck by private mints on licence, the Tesla series has stronger provenance. The coins come from Serbia's own state mint, not a third-party facility. This distinction matters for buyers who value the connection between the issuing country and the subject matter. Tesla is a genuine Serbian national hero, not a licensing deal.

The ZIN mint in Belgrade is one of the smaller sovereign mints to produce an internationally distributed bullion series, placing Serbia alongside countries with much larger bullion industries. The series has found distribution through major US dealers (APMEX, JM Bullion), European specialists, and NGC certification services, building an international collector base from a relatively small issuing country.
