Pacific Mermaid Silver: frequently asked questions

The Pacific Mermaid is a .999 fine silver coin series produced by Scottsdale Mint (Arizona, USA) under licence from the government of Samoa. Issued as legal tender with a face value of 2 Tala, each coin weighs 1 troy ounce and features mermaid designs drawn from Pacific Island maritime mythology. The series is available in brilliant uncirculated, antique, and colorized finishes.
Pacific Mermaid coins are priced above the silver spot price, currently $65.58 per troy ounce. The premium over spot varies by finish, with the antique edition typically commanding more than the BU version. We compare offers from several dealers in the table above so you can find the best price.
Two annual editions have been confirmed. The 2021 release depicted a Polynesian man in a canoe meeting a mermaid, available in brilliant uncirculated (15,000 mintage) and antique finish (5,000 mintage). The 2022 release, subtitled Princess of the Seas, showed a mermaid swimming through seashells and was produced in BU and colorized versions.
It depends on the country. In the UK, silver bullion coins are subject to CGT at 18% (basic rate) or 24% (higher rate), with a £3,000 annual exempt amount; only UK legal-tender coins like Britannias are CGT-free. In Canada, 50% of any gain is included in taxable income at your marginal rate. In the US, silver coins are treated as collectibles, with gains taxed at up to 28%.
