About the Prepper Silver

Scottsdale Mint's Fractional Silver for Emergency Preparedness

The Prepper series from Scottsdale Mint consists of 1 gram .999 fine silver bars designed and marketed for emergency preparedness, barter scenarios, and fractional precious metals ownership. The concept addresses a specific niche within the stacking community: buyers who want silver in denominations small enough to be practical for trade in hypothetical emergency scenarios where a full troy ounce would represent too much value for a small transaction.

Each bar measures just 10 mm x 16 mm x 0.5 mm, roughly the size of a small fingernail. The obverse carries Scottsdale Mint's crowned lion hallmark along with weight and purity markings; the reverse is left blank to minimise production costs. The bars are sold individually or in "Prepper Boxes" of 100 bars (totalling 100 grams or approximately 3.215 troy ounces), which is the most common retail format.

The per-gram premium on 1 gram bars is substantially higher than on standard bullion sizes. This is inherent to all fractional precious metals: manufacturing, shipping, and handling costs are relatively fixed per unit, and the lower the metal value per unit, the larger those costs become as a percentage. Buyers accumulating silver for investment should prefer 1 oz bars or larger formats for better value per ounce. The Prepper series is designed as a preparedness tool, gift item, and incremental stacking product rather than a cost-efficient investment.

Scottsdale Mint, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, has built strong brand recognition in the US bullion market through its crowned lion hallmark. The mint produces a range of products from sovereign legal tender coins (EC8 Caribbean programme) to stacker bars and proprietary rounds. The Prepper line represents their entry into the ultra-fractional market segment.

The bars are individual units stored in the acrylic case, not attached to each other. Each bar can be removed independently, unlike breakable products such as the Valcambi CombiBar where segments must be snapped apart. Individual gold bars are also available in assay cards for additional authentication.

The design is deliberately minimal: the lion hallmark and specifications on one side, nothing on the other. This functional approach contrasts with Scottsdale Mint's more elaborate products (Stacker bars, EC8 coins, Lion rounds) and keeps per-unit production costs as low as possible for a product where premium management is critical.

Prepper Bar Tax Treatment

As privately minted bars with no legal tender status, the Prepper series follows standard tax rules for precious metals bars in each jurisdiction. The gold and silver versions have different treatment in most countries.

United Kingdom

The gold Prepper bars (.9999 purity) qualify as VAT-exempt investment gold under UK law, which exempts gold bars of .995 or higher purity. The silver bars are subject to the standard 20% VAT. This makes the gold version relatively tax-efficient for UK buyers, while the silver version carries a significant tax burden on top of an already-high fractional premium. No CGT exemption applies to either metal (not legal tender).

United States

State sales tax treatment varies. In the approximately 35 states that exempt precious metals, both gold and silver versions should qualify at their respective purities. IRA eligibility is uncertain; Scottsdale Mint is not LBMA-accredited, and IRA custodians typically require bars from accredited refiners or nationally recognised producers. The 1 gram format is also non-standard for IRA purposes. Long-term capital gains are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate.

Canada

Gold bars at 99.5%+ purity are GST/HST-exempt. Silver bars at 99.9%+ purity also qualify. Both Prepper versions meet these thresholds.

European Union

Investment gold bars of .995+ purity are VAT-exempt under EU Directive 98/80/EC. The gold Prepper bars qualify. Silver bars attract the standard VAT rate in each member state (17-27%).

Australia and New Zealand

Australia exempts gold at 99.5%+ and silver at 99.9%+ purity from the 10% GST. The gold bars qualify; the silver bars at .999 are at the threshold. New Zealand exempts gold at 99.5%+ and silver at 99.9%+ from the 15% GST.

Practical Consideration

At current silver prices, a 1 gram silver bar has a metal value under $1.10. The premium paid above melt on fractional bars is the dominant cost, dwarfing tax implications. The gold version (1 gram at roughly $100+ metal value) is more practical as a store of value and benefits from gold's near-universal VAT exemption.

Prepper Bars vs Other Fractional Precious Metals

Prepper vs Valcambi CombiBar

The Valcambi CombiBar is the most direct competitor. Valcambi's 50 x 1g gold bar (and 100 x 1g silver version) is a single card where each segment can be snapped off as needed. The CombiBar is more space-efficient (one card versus 100 individual bars) and backed by LBMA-accredited Valcambi, giving it broader international liquidity and stronger IRA eligibility. The Prepper bars are individual units from the outset, requiring no breaking. For global recognition and resale ease, Valcambi wins. For immediate usability as individual bars, the Prepper format is more straightforward.

Prepper vs PAMP Multigram

PAMP's multigram products (such as 25 x 1g gold bars) serve the same fractional market. PAMP's LBMA accreditation and brand recognition give it broader international acceptance. The PAMP products come in individually assayed cards, providing stronger authentication. The Prepper bars rely on the Scottsdale Mint lion hallmark, which is well-recognised in the US market but less known internationally.

Prepper vs Generic 1 Gram Bars

Many refineries produce 1 gram gold and silver bars. The Prepper branding and Scottsdale Mint hallmark provide recognition within the US stacking community, but generic bars from LBMA-accredited refiners may offer lower premiums and better international liquidity. The Prepper Box packaging (custom acrylic case holding 100 bars) is a differentiator for buyers who want organised storage out of the box.

Silver vs Gold Prepper Bars

The practical difference between the two metals is stark at the 1 gram scale. A 1 gram silver bar holds under $1.10 of metal value, making it impractical for most barter scenarios despite the marketing. A 1 gram gold bar holds roughly $100+ of metal value, which is more plausible for small transactions. The gold version also benefits from VAT exemption in most jurisdictions, while silver does not. For the preparedness use case that defines the series, the gold version is the more credible product.
