Privateer Silver: frequently asked questions

The Privateer Collection is a seven-design pirate-themed silver round series produced by Elemetal Mint (USA). Each round contains 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver struck in ultra-high relief with a proof finish. Released from 2015 to 2016, the series is now complete and no longer in production. These are privately minted rounds with no face value or legal-tender status.
Privateer rounds contain 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, so their melt value is roughly twice the silver spot price ($65.33). Because the series is discontinued, secondary market premiums can vary by design and condition. Across 2 dealers and 3 listings we track, the price reflects both silver content and collector demand for these out-of-production rounds.
The seven designs are: The Privateer (a pirate ship at sea), The Siren, The Captain, The Kraken (a sea monster attacking a ship), The Plank, The White Whale (Moby Dick-inspired), and Davy Jones Locker. All share a common obverse featuring a skull over a ship's wheel with the motto "No Prey, No Pay". The White Whale has the lowest estimated mintage at 25,000 pieces.
Privateer rounds are privately minted with no legal-tender status, so they do not qualify for CGT exemptions that apply to certain sovereign coins. In the UK, gains are taxable at 18% (basic rate) or 24% (higher rate) above a £3,000 annual allowance. US investors pay up to 28% on gains from silver collectibles. In Canada, 50% of any gain is included in taxable income.
