About the Ragnarök Silver

Germania Mint's Norse Apocalypse in Black Silver

The Ragnarok series from Germania Mint depicts the Norse apocalypse through a distinctive Black Silver finish: a chemical treatment applied to .9999 fine silver that creates a darkened, oxidised surface. This is not paint or plating. The silver surface itself is chemically altered, producing dramatic contrast between raised design elements and recessed areas that enhances the sculptural quality of each piece.

The series launched in 2024 with Skoll and Hati, the celestial wolves destined to devour the Sun and Moon during Ragnarok, and continued in 2025 with Loki and Heimdall, the trickster god and the watchman of the gods who are fated to kill each other in the final battle. All pieces are designed by Kinga Sabatowicz, part of Germania Mint's in-house design team.

Two formats are available. The 1 oz Black Silver rounds carry a nominal "5 Mark" denomination (Germania Mint's proprietary system with no legal standing in any country) and are limited to 5,000 pieces per design. The 2 oz Ultra High Relief rounds carry "10 Mark" and are limited to just 500 pieces, featuring an antique finish with UV-reactive elements: under black light, hidden design details are revealed (such as lava flooding the Earth on the Skoll and Hati version). The 2 oz UHR rounds also contain embedded sunstone and moonstone, an unusual material addition for silver rounds.

Germania Mint is a private mint owned by German interests but manufacturing from facilities in Poland. The Ragnarok series is thematically connected to (but separate from) their Norse Gods bar series, which is a collaboration with The Royal Mint depicting Odin, Thor, and Loki in their prime. The Ragnarok rounds depict those same gods' apocalyptic end.

A Geminus set is also available: two 1 oz rounds (Brilliant Uncirculated finish, not Black Silver) paired in a duo capsule, limited to 500 sets per release. Further Ragnarok releases are planned for 2025-2026, though specific subjects have not been publicly confirmed.

The .9999 purity (four nines) is higher than most silver rounds, which typically use .999. This purity level matches sovereign products like the Canadian Maple Leaf and places the Ragnarok series at the top end of silver purity for privately minted products.

Ragnarok Series Tax and Legal Status

The Ragnarok rounds are not legal tender in any jurisdiction. The "5 Mark" and "10 Mark" denominations are Germania Mint's proprietary system and carry no legal standing. This affects tax treatment in several markets.

United Kingdom

Subject to 20% VAT as non-legal-tender silver products. Not eligible for CGT exemption (reserved for UK legal tender coins). The margin scheme may apply through some dealers for pre-owned inventory. Given the collector premiums on these rounds, the 20% VAT applies to a price well above melt value, making the tax cost more significant in absolute terms than for standard bullion.

United States

State sales tax varies. In the approximately 35 states that exempt precious metals, the .9999 purity should qualify rounds for exemption. Most state exemptions apply based on purity and metal type rather than legal tender status. Long-term capital gains are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate. IRA eligibility is unlikely given the private-mint status and collector pricing.

European Union and Germany

Germania Mint's home market. Standard VAT rates apply (19% in Germany). Some German dealers may offer the rounds under the margin scheme (Differenzbesteuerung gem. §25a UStG) for pre-owned or imported inventory, which charges VAT only on the dealer's margin rather than the full price. The effective VAT under the margin scheme is typically 0-5% rather than the full 19%.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore exempts Investment Precious Metals at 99.9%+ purity from the 9% GST, but the IPM scheme requires either bars/ingots/wafers or coins on the MAS-approved list. Privately minted rounds may not qualify. Hong Kong has no sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax on precious metals regardless of format.

Practical Consideration

The Ragnarok series is purchased primarily for its numismatic and artistic qualities rather than as a silver investment. The 500-piece 2 oz UHR rounds trade at substantial premiums above silver spot, and the Black Silver 1 oz rounds command collector-level pricing. Tax treatment on the underlying silver is a secondary concern for most buyers in this market segment.

Norse Doom in Silver and UV Light

The Ragnarok series draws on one of the most distinctive features of Norse mythology: the gods know their doom is prophesied and inevitable. Ragnarok (Old Norse for "fate of the gods" or "twilight of the gods") is the apocalyptic end of the world in which the gods, giants, and cosmic forces engage in a final battle that destroys and remakes the universe.

The 2024 inaugural release focused on Skoll and Hati, the two celestial wolves. In Norse mythology, Skoll chases the Sun and Hati chases the Moon across the sky. Their success in catching and devouring the celestial bodies is one of the triggering events of Ragnarok, plunging the world into darkness before the final battle begins. The 1 oz Black Silver versions depict each wolf individually against cosmic backdrops, while the 2 oz UHR version combines both wolves chasing the Sun and Moon with Earth at centre. The UHR version's UV-reactive feature reveals a hidden scene of Earth being flooded with lava when viewed under black light.

The 2025 release pairs Loki and Heimdall, two gods whose antagonism is central to the Ragnarok narrative. Loki, the trickster god and father of mythical monsters, is depicted sailing toward battle accompanied by flying arrows. Heimdall, the watchman of the gods and guardian of the Bifrost bridge, is fated to sound the Gjallarhorn to signal the beginning of Ragnarok, then to meet Loki in a fight where both are killed. The 2 oz UHR version presents the artifacts of both gods, Loki's ship and Heimdall's horn, alongside a cracked Earth on the verge of annihilation.

The obverse of all pieces features the Germania Mint double-eagle emblem framed by Nordic knotwork, maintaining visual consistency across the series while the reverse designs tell the progressive story of Ragnarok. Germania Mint's issue plan indicates further releases are planned, potentially covering other Ragnarok events such as the battles of Thor versus Jormungandr (the world serpent) or Odin versus Fenrir (the great wolf).

Ragnarok vs Other Norse-Themed Silver

Ragnarok vs Germania Mint Norse Gods Bar Series

Both are Germania Mint Norse mythology products, but they serve different purposes. The Norse Gods bars are a collaboration with The Royal Mint, depicting Odin, Thor, and Loki in their prime, in standard bar format with higher mintages and lower premiums. The Ragnarok series depicts the apocalyptic end, in round format with Black Silver or UHR finishes and lower mintages. For buyers who want Germania Mint Norse silver at accessible pricing, the Norse Gods bars are the practical choice. For collectors seeking the more dramatic and limited-edition line, Ragnarok delivers the artistry.

Ragnarok vs Perth Mint Norse Mythology Series

The Perth Mint produced Norse mythology coins (Odin, Thor, Freya) for Tuvalu in 2022. These carry legal tender status with government backing, standard BU finish, higher mintages, and lower premiums per ounce. The Perth Mint products are better for investment-oriented buyers who want Norse themes with sovereign-coin tax treatment. The Ragnarok series offers Black Silver finish, UV features, and dramatically lower mintages (5,000 vs Perth Mint's larger runs) at collector-level pricing.

Ragnarok vs Scottsdale Mint Norse Coins

Scottsdale produces Norse-themed coins for various sovereign issuers (Cook Islands and others) in high-relief format. Those carry legal tender status that the Ragnarok rounds lack, which matters for tax treatment in jurisdictions like the UK where legal tender status affects VAT margin scheme eligibility. Scottsdale's Norse coins have higher mintages and more conventional finishes. The Ragnarok series' Black Silver and UV features have no equivalent in the Scottsdale range.

Ragnarok vs Intaglio Mint Norse Series

Intaglio Mint produces Norse-themed rounds for the US market with high-relief striking. These share the private-mint, non-legal-tender status of the Ragnarok rounds but use standard silver finishes without Black Silver or UV technology. Mintages tend to be higher. The Ragnarok series commands higher premiums but offers materially different aesthetics through its proprietary finish and embedded gemstones on the UHR versions.

The 500-piece mintage on the 2 oz UHR versions is extremely low for any modern silver product. For comparison, some of Germania Mint's own Egyptian Gods series UHR rounds have mintages of 7,500-38,000. The Ragnarok UHR is genuinely scarce within the collector market.

Ragnarök Silver: frequently asked questions

Ragnarök rounds are priced above the silver spot price ($66.18) because of their low mintages and specialised finishes. The 1 oz Black Silver rounds (mintage 5,000 per design) carry a higher premium than standard bullion, while the 2 oz ultra-high-relief versions (mintage 500) trade at a substantial premium due to their rarity. Prices vary by design and format; the 4 dealers and 8 listings on this page let you compare current offers.

The series focuses specifically on Ragnarok, the prophesied destruction of the Norse cosmos. The 2024 release depicts Skoll and Hati, the two wolves fated to devour the Sun and Moon, triggering the end of the world. The 2025 release features Loki, the trickster god and catalyst of Ragnarok, paired with Heimdall, the watchman of the gods. The two are fated to kill each other in the final battle. Further designs depicting the apocalyptic events are planned.
Ragnarök rounds are privately minted with no legal-tender status in any country, so they carry no CGT exemption in any jurisdiction. In the UK, gains are taxable at 18% (basic rate) or 24% (higher rate) above the £3,000 annual allowance, and silver rounds also carry 20% VAT on purchase. US investors pay up to 28% on gains; in Canada 50% of any gain is included in taxable income.
