About the 1 oz Lady Justice Silver Round

Scottsdale Mint Lady Justice Silver Coin

The 1 oz Scottsdale Mint Lady Justice is a legal tender coin series issued by the Government of Gibraltar and struck by Scottsdale Mint in Arizona. Launched in 2021, the series features an evolving annual design centred on Lady Justice, the classical personification of the moral force in judicial systems, depicted blindfolded with sword and scales. Each year's design iterates on the theme while maintaining the Latin motto "Fides et Justitia" (Faith and Justice) as a consistent element.

Gibraltar's status as a British Overseas Territory gives these coins sovereign backing with a £1 face value denominated in Pound Sterling. The silver version is struck in .999 fine at a mintage of 100,000 per year, positioning it between mass-market bullion (millions of coins) and semi-numismatic limited editions (under 25,000). A gold version at .9999 fine with just 2,000 pieces per year targets the collector market more explicitly.

Scottsdale Mint has built a business model around striking coins for small territories and nations, including Fiji, Congo, Cayman Islands, and Barbados alongside Gibraltar. This gives their products legal tender status without the overhead of operating a sovereign mint. The Lady Justice series is their flagship Gibraltar programme, available through major US dealers and carrying premiums below the market-leading Silver Britannia but above generic private mint rounds.

Design Evolution

The series evolves its depiction of Lady Justice annually. The 2021 inaugural release showed her in a classical pose standing on seven stars and mountains. By 2023, the design moved Lady Justice further into the foreground with a front-facing effigy, creating a more commanding and immediate presence. All years share the obverse with "JUSTICE" and "FIDES ET JUSTITIA" inscriptions.

The reverse on all years features the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom and Gibraltar's coat of arms, along with weight, purity, and denomination markings. An antique finish variant was introduced in 2022, using chemical treatment to simulate age and create more dramatic visual contrast in the design details. A 1/10 oz silver version is available in select years.

Tax Treatment for the Gibraltar Lady Justice

As legal tender issued by Gibraltar (a British Overseas Territory), the Lady Justice carries sovereign status. However, the tax advantages depend on the specific jurisdiction and whether that jurisdiction recognises Gibraltar coinage for preferential treatment.

  • United Kingdom: The gold version (.9999 purity, legal tender from a recognised territory) qualifies for investment gold VAT exemption. The silver version is subject to 20% VAT regardless of its legal tender status. Critically, Gibraltar coins are not CGT-exempt in the UK. Only coins issued by the Royal Mint as UK legal tender (Britannias, Sovereigns) qualify for CGT exemption. The Lady Justice's £1 Gibraltar denomination provides no UK capital gains advantage.
  • United States: The gold coin's .9999 purity meets IRA fineness requirements. No federal sales tax; state exemptions vary (approximately 35 states exempt). Capital gains taxed at the 28% collectibles rate for precious metals.
  • European Union: The gold coin at .999+ purity as legal tender from a recognised territory qualifies for investment gold VAT exemption under the EU Investment Gold Directive. Silver is subject to local VAT rates (17-27%).
  • Australia: GST-free for the gold version as investment gold. Silver subject to 10% GST.
  • Canada: GST/HST treatment depends on classification. Legal tender coins meeting purity thresholds may qualify for exemption.

The key distinction for UK buyers: the Lady Justice costs less than a 1 oz Silver Britannia but does not offer CGT exemption on disposal. For gold buyers, the VAT treatment is equivalent to the Britannia, making the lower-premium Lady Justice potentially attractive for investment gold purchases.

Lady Justice vs Other Sovereign Silver Coins

The Lady Justice sits in a specific market position: sovereign-backed legal tender from a smaller issuing territory, struck by a respected US private mint, at premiums below the major sovereign programmes.

Vs Royal Mint Silver Britannia: The Britannia has significantly higher brand recognition, deeper secondary market liquidity, and UK CGT exemption. Its mintage is effectively unlimited, driven by demand. The Lady Justice at 100,000 per year is more constrained. For pure investment in silver coins, the Britannia's liquidity wins. For collectors wanting sovereign-backed silver at lower premiums with some scarcity, the Lady Justice has appeal.

Vs Scottsdale Mint Congo Silverback Gorilla: Both are Scottsdale-struck sovereign coins from smaller nations. The Gorilla has a 75,000 annual mintage (lower than Lady Justice's 100,000), creating slightly more scarcity. The Gorilla is a single-species series with varying poses; Lady Justice evolves the same theme. Both trade at similar premium levels.

Vs Perth Mint Silver Kookaburra: The Kookaburra has a 500,000 annual cap, broader global distribution, and 35 years of market history. The Lady Justice is newer (2021) with lower mintages but less established secondary market demand. Both change designs annually. The Kookaburra's Australian legal tender status provides GST-free treatment domestically that Lady Justice's Gibraltar status cannot replicate.

Vs American Silver Eagle: The Eagle's mass production (30+ million peak) and universal dealer acceptance make it the default investment silver coin in the US. The Lady Justice cannot compete on liquidity but offers a more distinctive design, smaller mintage, and lower premiums than the Eagle's secondary market pricing. For buyers who prefer design variety over maximum liquidity, the Lady Justice fills the gap between commodity Eagles and limited-edition proof coins.

1 oz Lady Justice Silver Round: frequently asked questions

A silver round is produced by a private mint and carries no face value or government guarantee. A silver coin is issued by a government mint as legal tender and carries a nominal face value. Both trade in the bullion market at prices driven by their silver content, but legal-tender coins may carry specific tax advantages in their country of issue that rounds do not.
The Lady Justice series is struck by Scottsdale Mint, a private mint based in Scottsdale, Arizona. The coins carry a face value issued by the Government of Gibraltar, making them legal tender of that British Overseas Territory. Scottsdale Mint produces bullion and collectible coins for several small territories and is known for its antique-finish products.
In the UK, silver rounds carry 20% VAT. In Canada, investment-grade silver bullion is charged 0% GST when it meets the purity threshold. In Australia, silver bullion carries 0% GST. VAT and GST treatment varies by country, so confirm the rules that apply to your purchase before buying.
