About the 2 oz Egyptian Gods Silver Round
Ultra High Relief Mythology Meets Silver Bullion
The 2 oz B.H. Mayer Egyptian Gods Silver Round is part of a ten-release series depicting Egyptian deities and historical figures in ultra high relief (UHR). All designs are by Heidi Wastweet, an accomplished coin designer with over 1,000 coin and medal designs since 1987. The series debuted in 2015 with Cleopatra, ran through four releases struck by Sunshine Minting, paused, then relaunched in 2021 with production moving to SilverTowne Mint.
The ultra-high-relief striking process uses extreme pressure to create sculptural three-dimensional depth that standard bullion techniques cannot achieve. Each round features two different depictions of the same Egyptian figure on obverse and reverse, one in the incised style of ancient Egyptian carvings and one as a dynamic sculptural scene. The rimless blank format, unusual for bullion, allows the artwork to extend to the very edge of the piece.
Ten subjects have been released: Cleopatra, Anubis, Sobek, Khnum, Osiris, Sekhmet, Horus, Thoth, Wadjet, and Ra. Mintage numbers declined steadily from 38,767 (Cleopatra) to 8,004 (Ra), creating natural scarcity for later releases. Secondary market premiums reflect this scarcity gradient, with the early high-mintage Cleopatra trading closer to melt and the final Ra commanding significant collector premiums.

The original four releases were struck by Sunshine Minting, a major US private mint that also produces blank planchets for the United States Mint. The relaunch switched to SilverTowne Mint. Heidi Wastweet's involvement throughout maintains design continuity. Her 11-year tenure as Chief Engraver at Sunshine Mint means she designed the first four rounds at the same facility where they were struck.
Tax Treatment for Egyptian Gods Rounds
These are privately minted .999 silver rounds with no face value, no denomination, and no government backing. Tax treatment follows the standard rules for private-mint silver bullion in each jurisdiction.
United States
No federal sales tax. Most states exempting precious metals include rounds meeting the .999 purity threshold. Private-mint rounds typically do not qualify for IRA inclusion (IRS rules require sovereign legal-tender coins or bars from approved refiners). However, Sunshine Minting products specifically may qualify through some custodians due to Sunshine's relationship with the US Mint. Capital gains at the 28% collectibles rate. Any collector premium above melt is also subject to CGT on disposal.
United Kingdom
20% VAT on purchase. Not UK legal tender; not CGT-exempt. The collector premium and limited mintage do not affect the tax position. UK buyers pay VAT on the full purchase price including any premium above spot.
Canada
At .999 purity, these rounds meet Canada's 99.9% threshold for GST/HST exemption on investment precious metals in qualifying forms. No RRSP eligibility (private mint product).
Australia, New Zealand, Singapore
The .999 purity meets investment-grade thresholds in each jurisdiction (99.9% for Australia and New Zealand, 99.9% for Singapore IPM), subject to the source meeting accreditation requirements. Hong Kong has no sales tax.
Egyptian Gods vs Other Collectible Silver Rounds
The Egyptian Gods series competes in the intersection between bullion investment and collectible artistry. Its direct competitors include other mythology-themed UHR rounds and sovereign-mint collector coins.
Against the 2 oz Germania Mint Artefacts, the Egyptian Gods series is older (2015 debut vs 2024), has lower purity (.999 vs .9999), and lacks edge serialisation. The Artefacts rounds are current production; Egyptian Gods are secondary-market only for completed releases. Both target mythology-interested collectors with UHR finishes, but the Artefacts series is ongoing and the Egyptian Gods series is complete at ten designs.
The Scottsdale Mint produces Egyptian-themed legal tender coins for Chad and other African nations in 2 oz and 5 oz formats. Those carry face values and government backing, commanding higher premiums but offering better tax treatment in jurisdictions that distinguish between legal-tender coins and private rounds.
Against generic .999 silver rounds from the same mints (SilverTowne, Sunshine), the Egyptian Gods rounds carry significantly higher premiums due to the UHR strike, limited declining mintages, and collector following. The UHR finish is genuinely difficult and expensive to produce, requiring multiple high-pressure strikes per piece, which limits production throughput and supports the premium.

Check weight (62.207 g) and diameter (40.4 mm) against known specifications using calibrated scales and calipers. Silver is non-magnetic, so a magnet slide test provides a quick screen. The ultra-high-relief strike gives each round pronounced three-dimensional depth that is difficult to replicate with counterfeit tooling. Buying from an established dealer reduces risk, as no advanced holograms or third-party authentication exist for these privately minted rounds.
-
Silver rounds carry VAT or equivalent tax in most markets because they are private-mint products with no legal tender status. In the UK, silver rounds attract 20% VAT. In Canada and Australia, silver rounds are subject to GST. US sales tax varies by state, with many states exempting qualifying bullion.
