About the Royal Arms Silver

Royal Mint Royal Arms Silver Coins

The Royal Arms bullion coin series, introduced in 2019, features a heraldic interpretation of the Royal coat of arms designed by Timothy Noad, one of the UK's foremost heraldic artists. The quartered shield displays England's three lions (first and fourth quarters), Scotland's lion rampant (second quarter), and Ireland's harp (third quarter), surrounded by the national plant symbols: the leek for Wales, the shamrock for Northern Ireland, the Tudor rose for England, and the thistle for Scotland. A radial line background adds visual depth and serves as an anti-counterfeiting measure.

The same Noad design has appeared across all seven annual issues from 2019 through 2025, with only the year-date changing. The Royal Mint described the 2025 edition as the design's "final appearance," suggesting either a new design or a series conclusion for 2026. In silver, the series is available in two sizes: the 1 oz silver Royal Arms and the 10 oz silver Royal Arms.

For UK investors, the Royal Arms offers the same core tax benefits as the silver Britannia: CGT exemption as UK legal tender. The Britannia is the Royal Mint's flagship silver bullion coin with wider international recognition, more size options, and the advanced four-feature security suite introduced in 2021. The Royal Arms is a simpler, more traditional design with fewer security features but the same fundamental tax advantages. Where the Britannia aims for broad international appeal, the Royal Arms leans into British heraldic heritage.

The coat of arms has appeared on British coinage since the medieval period, but the Royal Arms is the first dedicated modern bullion coin series featuring it as the central design. This gives the coin a weight of historical continuity that newer designs cannot match. The 10 oz silver coin, at 89 mm diameter, is one of the larger silver coins in the Royal Mint's bullion range and provides a lower per-ounce premium for buyers who want a substantial single piece.

Both sizes have a milled edge and are struck in .999 fine silver. The obverse transitioned from Queen Elizabeth II to King Charles III following the 2022 monarch change.

Security Features

  • Radial line background pattern serving as both a visual element and an anti-counterfeiting measure
  • Milled edge
  • Royal Mint authentication standards and sealed protective packaging

The Royal Arms does not carry the advanced four-feature security suite (surface animation, latent image, tincture lines, micro-text) found on modern Britannias from 2021 onward. Authentication relies on the radial line pattern, the precision of the die work, and the Royal Mint's packaging standards.

Design Details

Timothy Noad is a specialist heraldic artist who has designed coats of arms for institutions and individuals, giving this coin authentic heraldic credibility. The four national symbols surrounding the shield (leek, shamrock, Tudor rose, thistle) represent Wales, Northern Ireland, England, and Scotland respectively. The design remained unchanged across all seven years (2019-2025), providing consistency as an investment product.

Royal Arms Tax Treatment by Country

As UK legal tender coins from The Royal Mint, Royal Arms silver coins carry the same tax advantages as Britannias and other Royal Mint bullion coins in the United Kingdom, with standard investment bullion treatment internationally.

United Kingdom

All Royal Arms coins are CGT-exempt for UK residents because they are UK legal tender. This applies to both gold and silver versions. Gold coins are also VAT-free under the investment gold exemption. Silver coins carry 20% VAT on purchase. The CGT exemption is particularly valuable for silver investors, since the 20% VAT cost on purchase makes the tax-free disposal especially important for offsetting the entry cost. Capital gains on non-legal-tender silver (bars, foreign coins) are taxed at 18-24%, with only a £3,000 annual exemption.

United States

No federal sales tax. State sales tax varies. UK legal tender coins meeting the .999 silver fineness requirement are generally IRA-eligible through approved custodians. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.

Canada

Silver at 99.9% purity or higher is GST/HST-exempt. The .999 purity qualifies. RRSP eligibility is available for qualifying silver coins. Capital gains follow the 50% inclusion rate.

Australia

Investment-grade silver at 99.9% purity or higher is GST-free. The .999 purity meets this threshold. A 50% CGT discount applies for holdings over 12 months.

European Union

Gold Royal Arms coins are VAT-exempt as investment gold across the EU. Silver coins are subject to the standard VAT rate of the member state (17-27%). The margin scheme may apply on secondary market purchases in some EU countries.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore exempts qualifying silver coins (99.9%+ purity, legal tender) from GST under the IPM scheme. Hong Kong charges no sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax on silver bullion.

Royal Arms vs Britannia, Tudor Beasts, and Philharmonic

The most direct comparison for UK buyers is the silver Britannia, the Royal Mint's flagship bullion coin. Both are CGT-exempt UK legal tender at .999 silver purity. The Britannia has wider international recognition, more size options (from 1 oz to 1 kg in silver), and the advanced four-feature security suite since 2021. The Royal Arms has a simpler heraldic design and fewer premium features. In practice, the Royal Arms sometimes trades at slightly lower premiums than the Britannia, making it a cost-effective way to access the same CGT exemption.

The Queen's Beasts (2016-2021) and Tudor Beasts (2022-2026) also offer CGT exemption with annually changing heraldic designs. The key differences are format and collectibility. Queen's Beasts and Tudor Beasts use a 2 oz silver standard (with higher purity at .9999), while Royal Arms is 1 oz at .999. The rotating designs of those series add collector premiums that the Royal Arms' fixed design does not command. For investors who want a consistent, no-frills CGT-exempt silver coin without the collectibility premium, the Royal Arms is the more straightforward choice.

Against the Sovereign, which is also CGT-exempt, the comparison is about weight and metal. The Sovereign's irregular weight (7.32g / 0.2354 oz of gold) doesn't match standard bullion increments. The Royal Arms offers standard 1 oz and 10 oz weights that align with how the bullion market prices and trades silver.

The Austrian Silver Philharmonic provides a useful benchmark for premium comparison. The Philharmonic is consistently among the lowest-premium sovereign silver coins, but it offers no CGT exemption for UK buyers. Over a long holding period, the CGT saved on disposal of Royal Arms coins can substantially outweigh the slightly higher purchase premium compared to a Philharmonic.
