The Final Chapter of the RCM's 1.5 oz Arctic Wildlife Programme

The Snowy Owl is a 2018 silver bullion coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, the seventh and one of the last designs in the RCM's 1.5 oz silver programme. It features the snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) in flight with wings fully extended and talons tucked, struck in .9999 fine silver. The coin builds on the same format that made the programme distinctive: 50% more silver than a standard 1 oz coin, packed into a 38 mm diameter through a 4.5 mm thickness.

The 2018 Snowy Owl introduced a security upgrade absent from earlier releases in the programme. A laser-engraved maple leaf privy mark on the reverse contains a micro-engraved two-digit year visible only under magnification. This feature, borrowed from the mainstream Silver Maple Leaf, makes the Snowy Owl more resistant to counterfeiting than its predecessors, including the 2016 Snow Falcon.

The snowy owl holds particular cultural significance in Canada. Designated the official bird of Quebec in 1987, it is one of the country's most recognisable Arctic species. Unlike most owls, the snowy owl is diurnal, active during daylight hours through the continuous summer sun of the Arctic. This daytime hunting behaviour makes it one of the few owl species readily observed in the wild, and the coin design captures that visibility with the bird's wings at full stretch against a clean background.

Snowy Owl Technical Specifications

The Snowy Owl was also issued in larger formats, including a 1 kilogram silver version (32.15 troy ounces in a single coin) and gold editions at 1/4 oz and 2 oz. The 1 kilo version is one of the heavier readily available silver bullion coins from any mint. The standard 1.5 oz coin fits 38 mm capsules, matching the diameter of the 1 oz Maple Leaf despite its greater silver content.

Both the obverse and reverse feature radial lines, the RCM's anti-counterfeiting technology that creates a distinctive light-diffracting pattern under magnification. The obverse carries Susanna Blunt's uncrowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the same effigy used across the programme's run. Tubes hold 15 coins for a total of 22.5 troy ounces, an unusual tube weight that reflects the non-standard denomination.

As Canadian legal tender backed by the Government of Canada, the Snowy Owl follows standard silver bullion tax rules in each market, with its .9999 purity exceeding all investment-grade thresholds globally.

• Canada: GST/HST exempt. The .9999 purity exceeds the 99.9% threshold for zero-rated precious metals in coin form.
• United States: IRA-eligible under IRS Section 408(m), with the .9999 purity surpassing the .999 minimum for silver in tax-advantaged retirement accounts. State sales tax treatment varies; most states exempt precious metals bullion, though some impose thresholds.
• United Kingdom: Subject to 20% VAT on silver. No CGT exemption, as this is not UK legal tender. Pre-owned examples may qualify for the margin scheme, where VAT is charged only on the dealer's profit margin rather than the full sale price.

Snowy Owl vs Snow Falcon and Other Silver Bullion Coins

The most direct comparison is with other coins in the same RCM 1.5 oz programme. The Snowy Owl shares identical specifications with the Snow Falcon (2016), the Polar Bear (2013), Arctic Fox (2014), and the rest of the series. The key differentiator is the laser-engraved maple leaf privy mark introduced on the Snowy Owl, a security feature absent from the Snow Falcon and earlier releases. For buyers prioritising anti-counterfeiting protection, the later issues in the programme have a tangible advantage.

Against the RCM's own Silver Maple Leaf, the comparison comes down to format and liquidity. The Maple Leaf is the world's most traded silver coin, with the tightest bid-ask spreads and near-universal dealer acceptance. It also carries the privy mark and radial line security features. The Snowy Owl delivers more silver per coin at the same purity, but the 1.5 oz denomination trades less frequently on the secondary market and is quoted by fewer dealers.

The bird theme invites comparison with the Perth Mint's Silver Kookaburra, an Australian 1 oz coin with annual design changes. Both appeal to collectors who value wildlife imagery, but the Kookaburra is limited mintage at .999 purity, positioning it more as a collector piece, while the Snowy Owl targets the bullion market with unlimited mintage and .9999 purity. The Niue-issued Athenian Owl is another owl-themed option, but at 1 oz and .999 purity with a classical rather than naturalistic design, it occupies a different niche.

Among the seven designs in the 1.5 oz programme, the Snowy Owl benefits from being one of the later releases with improved security features. On the secondary market, earlier designs (particularly the Polar Bear) sometimes command higher premiums due to their inaugural status and lower remaining availability. The Snowy Owl tends to be more readily available from dealers at closer-to-spot pricing, making it a practical choice for stackers prioritising cost per ounce of silver rather than collectibility.
