The Twin Maple Leaf is a 2 oz silver bullion coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, introduced in 2017. It contains two troy ounces of .9999 fine silver and carries a $10 CAD face value, making it the only multi-ounce silver coin in the RCM's standard annual bullion lineup. The reverse features twin sugar maple leaves (Acer saccharum) joined at the stem, designed by Canadian wildlife artist Celia Godkin, a departure from the single iconic leaf on the standard Silver Maple Leaf.

The coin shares the same advanced security features as the standard Maple Leaf programme: precise radial lines machined into the coin surface (introduced in 2014) and a micro-engraved laser maple leaf privy mark containing the last two digits of the year, visible only under magnification. These features make the Twin Maple Leaf one of the most counterfeit-resistant silver bullion coins available, identical in security to the world's most widely traded silver coin from the same mint.

A notable design decision: the 38 mm diameter is identical to the standard 1 oz Maple Leaf despite containing twice the silver. The extra metal is accommodated entirely by increased thickness. This means the Twin Maple Leaf fits standard 38 mm capsules, though tubes hold fewer coins due to the greater thickness (14 coins per tube, yielding 28 oz, compared to 25 coins per tube for the 1 oz Maple Leaf).

The Twin Maple Leaf was introduced partly to offer stackers a more efficient way to accumulate silver. Fewer individual coins are needed to reach the same total weight, reducing handling and storage overhead. On a per-ounce basis, the Twin Maple Leaf typically trades at a lower premium than the 1 oz Maple Leaf, making it cost-efficient for buyers focused on maximising silver weight per dollar spent. There is no fixed mintage: like the standard Maple Leaf, it is produced to meet market demand.

Security Features

Two advanced anti-counterfeiting measures carry over from the standard Maple Leaf programme. Precise radial lines create a background pattern on the coin surface that is extremely difficult to replicate with standard minting equipment. A micro-engraved laser maple leaf privy mark, positioned in the reverse field, contains the last two digits of the mintage year (for example, "25" for 2025) and requires magnification to read. Both features were introduced to the Maple Leaf programme in 2014 and have been standard across all RCM bullion coins since.

The obverse initially featured Queen Elizabeth II's portrait by Susanna Blunt. From 2023, the portrait transitioned to King Charles III, designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati. The reverse design by Celia Godkin has remained consistent across all years: the twin sugar maple leaves do not change annually, with only the year inscription on the obverse updating.

Packaging

Sold individually, in tubes of 14 coins (14 coins at 2 oz each = 28 oz per tube), or in bulk. The tube format is designed for stackers buying silver by weight rather than individual collectors.

Canada

GST/HST exempt as investment-grade silver bullion. The .9999 purity exceeds the 99.9% threshold for the federal exemption. Capital gains are taxed at the 50% inclusion rate, with the Listed Personal Property rule exempting transactions where both purchase and sale prices fall below $1,000 CAD.

United States

IRA-eligible under IRS Section 408(m). The .9999 purity from a sovereign government mint exceeds the .999 minimum threshold. Many states exempt bullion from sales tax. Federal capital gains on silver are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% for long-term holdings. No 1099-B reporting threshold applies to single-coin sales.

United Kingdom

Silver bullion is subject to 20% VAT regardless of origin or legal tender status. The Twin Maple Leaf is not commonly stocked by UK dealers, who tend to focus on the Silver Britannia and Sovereign for domestic buyers. As a non-UK legal tender coin, it is not CGT-exempt. Capital gains are taxed at 18% or 24% after the £3,000 annual exemption.

EU Countries

Silver coins from non-EU countries are generally subject to local VAT rates (17% to 27% depending on the country). The margin scheme may apply on secondary market sales in countries like Germany and the Netherlands.

The most natural comparison is the standard 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf. Both coins share .9999 purity, 38 mm diameter, the same security features (radial lines and micro-engraved privy mark), and the same RCM sovereign backing. The Twin Maple Leaf offers twice the silver per coin at a typically lower per-ounce premium, making it more cost-efficient for weight-focused accumulation. The trade-off is reduced liquidity: the 1 oz Maple Leaf is the world's most widely traded silver bullion coin, accepted by every dealer globally, while the Twin Maple Leaf has a smaller but growing market presence.

The Perth Mint produces various 2 oz silver coins in the Lunar and Kookaburra series at .9999 purity. These change design annually and carry collector premiums that typically exceed the Twin Maple Leaf's pricing. The Perth coins appeal to collectors seeking year-on-year variety, while the Twin Maple Leaf's fixed design appeals to stackers who want consistency and lower premiums.

The Royal Mint does not currently produce a standard 2 oz silver Britannia, giving the Twin Maple Leaf a unique position among government-issued silver at the 2 oz weight. The Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts series included 2 oz silver coins at .9999 purity, but that series has concluded. The Silver Britannia remains available only in 1 oz, 10 oz, and kilo formats, with no 2 oz option.

For buyers choosing between two 1 oz Maple Leafs and one Twin Maple Leaf, the mathematics are straightforward: the Twin Maple Leaf costs less total (lower per-ounce premium), takes up less space, and is faster to count and handle.
