About the 10g Fortuna Gold Bar

The 10g PAMP Fortuna Gold Bar

The PAMP Fortuna is the world's most recognisable minted gold bar. The Lady Fortuna design, depicting the Roman goddess of fortune blindfolded and holding a cornucopia overflowing with gold coins, was introduced in 1979 and created an entirely new product category. Before PAMP, bullion bars were plain stamped ingots with nothing more than weight and purity marks. The Fortuna turned a commodity product into something with identity, and it has remained essentially unchanged for over 45 years.

The 10g Fortuna is a 999.9 fine gold bar measuring 26.5 x 15.8 x 1.25mm. It comes sealed in PAMP's CertiPAMP tamper-evident assay packaging with a unique serial number on both the bar and the certificate. Each bar also carries VeriScan authentication: PAMP's patented system that scans and records the bar's microscopic surface topography at the point of manufacture. The microscopic profile is unique to each bar, impossible to replicate, and can be verified using PAMP's smartphone app or PC software with a document scanner.

At roughly $1,000-$1,100, the 10g Fortuna sits at a price point accessible to regular investors, though the premiums at this size (8-12% over spot) remain elevated compared to larger bars. PAMP's brand premium adds 2-3 percentage points above comparable bars from Valcambi or Heraeus. That premium reflects the design, the VeriScan technology, and PAMP's position as the most liquid private-refinery brand in the global bar market.

The 10g Fortuna is available from 48 dealers, making it one of the most widely stocked products at this weight class. It is carried by virtually every major bullion dealer in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

Design Details

The obverse features the Lady Fortuna in high relief: blindfolded, draped in flowing robes, holding a cornucopia from which gold coins spill. Surrounding elements include sheaves of wheat, poppies, and a wheel of fortune. The image carries no text; the design speaks for itself. The reverse displays the PAMP Suisse logo with a registered Swiss cross mark, weight and purity markings (10g 999.9 FINE GOLD), and the unique serial number.

VeriScan Authentication

VeriScan maps each bar's microscopic surface topography at sub-micron resolution during manufacturing and stores the profile in PAMP's secure database. The profile is unique; no two bars share the same microscopic surface pattern. Verification is performed via the VeriScan smartphone app (scanning the bar's surface) or PC software with a document scanner. The system received LBMA Gold Bar Integrity (GBI) accreditation in 2023. Importantly, VeriScan reads the bar itself, not the packaging, so verification works even if the bar has been removed from its CertiPAMP card.

Tax Treatment of the 10g PAMP Fortuna Gold Bar

The Fortuna's tax treatment is identical to all other 999.9 fine gold bars from LBMA-accredited refiners. The Lady Fortuna design, VeriScan technology, and PAMP brand have no bearing on tax classification.

  • United Kingdom: VAT-exempt as investment gold. Subject to CGT on gains above £3,000 (18-24% rate). Not CGT-exempt; only UK legal tender coins carry that exemption. For UK buyers at the 10g price point, a 1/4oz Britannia coin (7.78g gold, CGT-exempt) may be more tax-efficient despite the smaller gold content. SIPP-eligible as a CGT-sheltered pension holding.
  • United States: IRA-eligible. PAMP gold bars are widely listed as qualifying assets by IRA custodians. The 999.9 purity and LBMA accreditation exceed IRS requirements under Section 408(m). Gains taxed at the collectibles rate (28% max). 1099-B reporting applies on qualifying sales.
  • European Union: VAT-exempt under the EU Investment Gold Directive. Germany's 12-month holding period for CGT exemption applies.
  • Switzerland: VAT-exempt on investment gold. PAMP's home market.
  • Canada: GST/HST-exempt for gold at 99.5%+ purity. RRSP and TFSA-eligible through approved custodians.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold (99.5%+ purity).
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the IPM scheme. PAMP has strong distribution through Singapore dealers including Silver Bullion Pte Ltd.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax.

From Plain Ingots to the World's Most Recognised Bar

PAMP was founded in 1977 in Castel San Pietro, Ticino, by Mahmoud Kassem Shakarchi, a Lebanese-Swiss businessman. The company name, Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux, translates to "Artistic Precious Metal Products", and that name was not decorative. PAMP's founding premise was that bullion products could be crafted with artistic care rather than simply stamped and shipped.

The Lady Fortuna design debuted in 1979, two years after the company's founding. It was the first decorative motif ever placed on a precious metals bar. The concept was radical for its time: the bullion industry dealt in weight and purity, and the idea that a bar's appearance mattered was foreign to the market. The Fortuna proved that buyers responded to design, and in doing so created the entire category of minted (struck) bars as distinct from cast (poured) bars.

The design has remained essentially unchanged since 1979, making it one of the most enduring motifs in the precious metals industry. In 2024, PAMP released a 45th Anniversary edition in select sizes, but the standard Fortuna design continues as the cornerstone of the range. The design depicts the Roman goddess Fortuna, traditionally associated with luck, fate, and prosperity. She is shown blindfolded, a classical reference to fortune's impartiality, holding a cornucopia that overflows with gold coins alongside sheaves of wheat (symbolising abundance) and poppies.

PAMP became part of the MKS Group in 1981, and the combined entity, now known as MKS PAMP GROUP, operates across commodity trading, financial services, and refining. This vertical integration, from mine to market, gives PAMP an unusual position in the industry: it is both a refiner and part of a global precious metals supply chain. The VeriScan authentication technology was introduced later, adding a digital security layer that further cemented PAMP's premium positioning. The system received LBMA Gold Bar Integrity accreditation in 2023.

10g Fortuna vs Kinebar, Valcambi, and Perth Mint

At 10g, the PAMP Fortuna's premium over competitors is proportionally larger than at heavier weights. The question is whether the VeriScan authentication, brand recognition, and Lady Fortuna design justify the additional cost per gram.

The 10g Argor-Heraeus Kinebar is the most direct security-feature competitor. The Kinebar's holographic Kinegram is embossed into the gold surface using technology from OVD Kinegram AG, the same company that produces security elements for banknotes. The Kinegram is instantly visually verifiable without any app or database, which gives it an edge in peer-to-peer transactions. VeriScan requires either the smartphone app or PC software for verification. The Kinebar is typically priced between the standard Argor-Heraeus bar and the Fortuna, making it a cost-effective security-enhanced option. Both are Swiss, both are LBMA-accredited, both are 999.9 fine.

The 10g Valcambi is the value benchmark. No decorative design, no digital authentication, and consistently the lowest or near-lowest premium from an LBMA-accredited Swiss refiner at this weight. The premium saving over the Fortuna at 10g can amount to several percent, which at $1,000+ is a tangible dollar amount. For investors who will sell through established dealers (where any LBMA bar sells readily), the Valcambi delivers the same gold content for less.

The 10g Perth Mint is the government-backed alternative, produced by the Western Australian Government. It comes in CertiCard packaging with a kangaroo hologram. Perth Mint is particularly competitive in Australian and Asian markets. Its government backing provides a sovereign assurance that no private refiner can match, regardless of their LBMA accreditation.

The 10g Britannia bar from the Royal Mint offers UK government provenance but without the CGT exemption that Britannia coins carry. For UK buyers, the Fortuna's stronger global brand recognition may be more relevant for future resale than the Britannia bar's domestic familiarity.

PAMP's resale advantage is well documented: Fortuna bars consistently command slightly higher buyback prices than generic or competitor bars. At 10g, where the initial premium gap is at its widest, this resale advantage partially offsets the higher purchase cost. The net cost of ownership depends on holding period and the specific dealer's buyback spreads.

10g Fortuna Gold Bar: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 10g PAMP Suisse Fortuna bar listed here is £1,096.49 from BullionJoy, sitting around 7.5% over the gold spot price. Each bar is 999.9 fine gold, sealed in PAMP's tamper-evident CertiPAMP assay packaging with a unique serial number.
The Lady Fortuna motif, introduced in 1979, depicts the Roman goddess of fortune blindfolded and holding a cornucopia overflowing with coins, alongside wheat sheaves, poppies, and a wheel of fortune. PAMP Suisse, a Swiss refiner founded in 1977 and LBMA-accredited, created it as the first decorative design ever placed on a precious metals bar. The reverse carries the PAMP logo, weight, purity, and serial number.
A minted bar is produced by striking a pre-cut blank with engraved dies, giving sharp detail and a smooth, mirror-like finish. A cast bar is made by pouring molten gold into a mould, leaving a rougher, more organic surface. The PAMP Fortuna is a minted bar. Cast bars typically carry lower premiums over spot; minted bars like the Fortuna command higher premiums for their finish and assay packaging.
Across the 6 dealers we track, 10g PAMP Fortuna bars range from £1,096.49 to £1,136.48, with premiums currently sitting around 7.5% over spot. Smaller gold bars carry higher percentage premiums than larger sizes; the 10g format is a popular entry point for buyers who want a named Swiss refiner at a lower outlay than 1 oz.
