1 oz Silver Coin: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 1oz silver coin we track right now is £51.70, about 4.9% over the £49.83 silver spot price, available from Chards. We compare prices from 5 dealers, so the comparison table is the fastest way to find the best deal.
Standard investment-grade silver bullion coins are .999 fine, meaning 99.9% pure silver, containing one troy ounce (31.1 g) of silver. Sterling silver (.925) is a lower purity used in jewellery and cutlery, not bullion. If you are buying a coin as a silver investment rather than a collector piece, look for .999 or .9999 marked on the coin.
Keep silver coins in individual airtight capsules or sealed coin tubes to minimise air and moisture contact, which accelerates tarnishing. Store them in a cool, low-humidity environment and avoid handling them directly (hold by the edge). PVC-containing flips and pages can off-gas and damage surfaces over time, so use acid-free, PVC-free holders for long-term storage.
No. Toning and tarnish are a normal part of silver's surface chemistry and do not reduce the metal's value. Cleaning, even with mild products, risks leaving micro-scratches that lower a coin's resale grade. Dealers and buyers expect natural toning on silver bullion. Leave the coins as they are and focus on proper storage instead.
