About the 1g Maple Leaf Gold Coin

The 1g Gold Maple Leaf

The 1g Gold Maple Leaf is the smallest coin denomination in the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf series, added to the lineup in 2014. It contains one gram of 999.9 fine gold, carries a face value of C$0.50, and is Canadian legal tender. The coin measures approximately 10 mm in diameter, making it about the size of a pencil eraser.

The RCM introduced this denomination to create an entry point for buyers who want sovereign-minted gold at the lowest possible cost. At roughly $100-$120 per coin at current gold prices, it puts a genuine government-backed gold coin within reach of virtually any budget. The coin carries the same iconic maple leaf reverse design and radial line security features found on the full-size 1 oz Maple Leaf, just scaled down.

This denomination also serves as the building block for the MapleGram product, which packages twenty-five 1g Maple Leaf coins in a divisible blister sheet. Individual 1g Maple Leafs are available separately from dealers, though the MapleGram format offers a slight per-gram premium advantage when buying in quantity.

The obverse carries the monarch's effigy, transitioning from Queen Elizabeth II (Susanna Blunt portrait) to King Charles III from 2024 onwards. The reverse features Walter Ott's iconic sugar maple leaf with precision-engraved radial lines, first introduced across the Maple Leaf series in 2015. These lines create a light-diffracting pattern that is extremely difficult to replicate and provides visible authentication to the naked eye.

At just 10 mm, the coin is extraordinarily small. Individual handling without a capsule or holder is impractical, and the coin's thinness means it could easily slip between fingers. Most dealers sell individual 1g Maple Leafs in protective packaging or as part of the MapleGram blister sheet.

Tax Position for the 1g Gold Maple Leaf

Canada

GST/HST exempt as investment-grade gold bullion at 99.5% purity or above. The 999.9 fine Maple Leaf qualifies. Physical gold bullion, including Maple Leaf coins, cannot be held in RRSPs or TFSAs; only mining stocks and precious metal ETFs are eligible for Canadian registered accounts. Capital gains are taxable at the standard inclusion rate (50% of the gain added to taxable income).

United Kingdom

VAT-exempt as investment gold. Not CGT-exempt, as only UK legal tender coins qualify for Capital Gains Tax exemption. At the 1g weight, the annual GBP 3,000 CGT allowance covers most realistic holding scenarios. Buyers seeking CGT-exempt gold in the UK should consider the Britannia or Sovereign instead.

United States

IRA-eligible. The 1g Maple Leaf meets the IRS 99.5% purity threshold for gold in self-directed IRAs, and the Royal Canadian Mint is a recognised foreign mint. Must be stored at an IRS-approved depository. No federal sales tax; state exemptions vary.

European Union

VAT-exempt under EU Directive 98/80/EC. The Maple Leaf appears on the EU's annual list of qualifying investment gold coins.

Australia and New Zealand

Australia: GST-free as investment gold (99.5% purity threshold). New Zealand: GST-exempt for gold at 99.5% purity or above. Both countries treat capital gains as taxable, with Australia offering a 50% CGT discount for holdings exceeding 12 months.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals (IPM) scheme. Hong Kong: no sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.

1g Maple Leaf vs Other Gram-Weight Gold Options

At the 1g weight, buyers are choosing between sovereign-minted coins and private refiner bars. The Maple Leaf's primary advantage over bars is its legal tender status, sovereign mint backing, and the security features inherited from the full-size Maple Leaf series.

The 1g Gold Noah's Ark is the most direct coin competitor. Both are 999.9 fine and qualify for EU VAT exemption. The Noah's Ark typically trades at a lower premium than the Maple Leaf, making it the cheaper option on a per-gram basis. The Maple Leaf counters with stronger global brand recognition and the RCM's radial line security features, which the Noah's Ark does not have. For purely cost-conscious buying at 1g, the Noah's Ark often wins on price.

The 1g Gold Panda is 999 fine (three nines versus the Maple Leaf's four) and has annually changing designs that add collector appeal. Gold Pandas are generally not IRA-eligible, and counterfeiting risk is higher for the Panda series than for any other major bullion coin. For pure bullion purposes, the Maple Leaf is the safer and cheaper choice.

The PAMP Suisse Fortuna 1g bar is the most recognised private-mint product at this weight. Sealed in a CertiPAMP tamper-evident assay card, it has strong resale liquidity and a familiar brand. Its premium is comparable to the Maple Leaf. The key difference is legal tender status: the Maple Leaf's Canadian face value qualifies it for IRA inclusion and certain VAT treatments that bars do not enjoy in all jurisdictions.

Buyers purchasing multiple grams should compare the MapleGram25 sheet (25 x 1g coins) against buying individual coins. The sheet format delivers a lower per-gram premium and includes an assay certificate with serial numbers for the complete pack.

The cheapest 1g Gold Maple Leaf across the dealers we track is $158.15 from Toronto Gold Bullion, currently around 17.4% over spot. At just one gram of gold, the premium per gram is higher than on larger coins because fabrication and packaging costs are spread across very little metal.
One gram of gold is worth $4,179.10 at spot. The best available price for this coin is $158.15, a premium of around 17.4% over that benchmark. Yes. Gold Maple Leafs are struck at 999.9 fineness by the Royal Canadian Mint, which is effectively 24 carat gold and one of the highest purities produced as a standard bullion coin.
