About the 1g Maplegram Gold Coin

The MapleGram: Divisible Gold from the Royal Canadian Mint

The MapleGram is a sheet of individually sealed 1-gram Gold Maple Leaf coins in a divisible blister pack, produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. The standard format, the MapleGram25, contains twenty-five coins for a total of 25 grams (0.8038 troy ounces) of 999.9 fine gold. Each coin is legal tender in Canada with a face value of C$0.50.

The concept is straightforward: buy a sheet of gold coins that can be separated one at a time as needed. Each perforated section maintains its own tamper-evident seal when detached, so individual grams can be given away, sold, or bartered without compromising the authenticity of the remaining coins. The full sheet comes with an assay certificate and unique serial numbers for traceability.

This format fills a specific niche. Individual 1g Maple Leaf coins sold separately carry higher per-gram premiums than the same coins purchased as a MapleGram sheet. The bulk packaging reduces handling and verification costs for dealers, and those savings pass through to buyers. For anyone planning to acquire more than a few grams of gold in this format, the MapleGram sheet is the more cost-effective route.

The divisibility angle has practical appeal for gift-giving (individual grams can be snapped off and handed out), for emergency preparedness (tiny units of universally recognised value), and for introducing new buyers to physical gold at the lowest possible entry price.

Each coin carries the standard Maple Leaf design: Walter Ott's sugar maple leaf on the reverse with precision-engraved radial lines, and the monarch's effigy on the obverse (King Charles III from 2024 onwards). The micro-engraved radial lines are the same security feature used on full-size 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs, scaled to this miniature format.

At 8 mm diameter, these are among the smallest government-issued gold coins in regular production. The coins are roughly pencil-eraser sized, so the sealed blister pack serves a practical purpose beyond authentication: it prevents the coins from being lost during handling.

A MapleGram8 format (eight coins, 8 grams total) is also available from some dealers, for buyers who want the divisible concept at a lower total outlay.

MapleGram Tax Treatment

Canada

GST/HST exempt as investment-grade gold (99.5% purity or above). Each coin in the sheet is a legal tender Maple Leaf, meeting all qualifications for exempt investment gold. Physical gold bullion cannot be held in RRSPs or TFSAs. Capital gains are taxable at the standard 50% inclusion rate.

United States

IRA-eligible. Each coin meets the IRS purity requirement (99.5% for gold) and is issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, a recognised sovereign government mint. The MapleGram format has been accepted by major IRA custodians for self-directed precious metals IRAs. No federal sales tax; state exemptions vary.

United Kingdom

VAT-exempt as investment gold. Not CGT-exempt (only UK legal tender coins qualify). Given the small per-coin value, CGT is rarely a practical consideration at this denomination.

European Union

VAT-exempt under the EU investment gold directive. The Gold Maple Leaf is a standard entry on the EU's annual list of qualifying coins.

Australia

GST-free as investment gold from a recognised sovereign mint. CGT applies on disposal with 50% discount for holdings over 12 months.

MapleGram vs Other Divisible Gold Products

The Valcambi CombiBar is the most direct competitor. These are gold bars scored into separable 1g pieces, available in 20g, 50g, and 100g sheet formats. The per-gram premium on a CombiBar is often comparable to or slightly lower than a MapleGram. The critical difference is status: CombiBar pieces are plain gold with no coin design, no face value, and no legal tender standing. MapleGram coins are legal tender Canadian coins with the Maple Leaf design and RCM security features. This distinction matters for IRA eligibility in the US (CombiBar pieces do not qualify) and for VAT treatment in some EU jurisdictions.

Buying individual 1g Maple Leaf coins from separate blister packs is more expensive per gram than buying a MapleGram sheet, because individual packaging and dealer handling costs are higher. The MapleGram's value proposition is precisely this: the same coins at a lower per-unit cost through efficient packaging.

Against buying a single 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf, the MapleGram loses badly on premium efficiency. A 1 oz coin contains 31.1 grams at a 3-5% premium, while 25 grams in MapleGram format costs substantially more per gram. The MapleGram buyer is paying for divisibility, not for cost-effective gold accumulation. Anyone whose primary goal is maximising gold per dollar should buy the largest denomination they can comfortably afford.

PAMP Suisse offers individual 1g Fortuna bars in CertiPAMP assay cards, but each bar requires its own packaging, making bulk purchase more cumbersome than the MapleGram's integrated sheet. For buyers wanting multiple grams with the option to distribute them individually, the MapleGram format is the most practical solution currently available from a sovereign mint.
