The 5g Gold Maple Leaf is a fractional denomination from the Royal Canadian Mint's flagship bullion programme. Struck in .9999 fine gold (four nines), it carries the same purity standard that has defined the Maple Leaf since 1982, when the series became the first government bullion coin to achieve this level of refinement. The RCM is one of the few mints in the world that refines its own gold from raw ore to finished coin, maintaining control over the entire production chain.

At 5 grams (0.1607 troy ounces), the coin sits at the entry level of the Maple Leaf range, which spans from 1g up to 1oz. The 5g denomination costs approximately $500 to $550, comparable to a 5g American Eagle but with meaningfully different specifications. The Maple Leaf's .9999 purity qualifies it for tax exemptions in every jurisdiction that uses a purity threshold (UK, EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore), whereas the Eagle's 22-karat alloy falls short in several of these markets.

The reverse shows the iconic sugar maple leaf, essentially unchanged since 1979, with the background radial lines added from 2015.

There is no alloy, unlike the American Gold Eagle where the 22-karat composition means each coin weighs more than its stated gold content. The pure gold composition does make the Maple Leaf softer and more susceptible to bag marks and scratching than alloyed coins, a well-known trade-off that affects visual grade but not metal value.

The 5g Maple Leaf is the strongest all-round sovereign coin at this weight. Its .9999 purity qualifies for tax exemptions in more jurisdictions than the 5g American Eagle (916.7 fine) and matches the Asahi and PAMP products. Its Bullion DNA security system is unmatched by any competitor at any weight. Government mint backing provides a level of assurance that privately refined products from Asahi or PAMP cannot replicate.

Against the 5g American Eagle, the trade-off is purity versus durability. The Eagle's 22-karat alloy is harder and more scratch-resistant, which matters for coins stored loose. The Maple Leaf's pure gold is softer and marks more easily. In investment terms, scratch susceptibility is cosmetic; it does not affect the gold content or the coin's resale value at melt. The Eagle's IRA eligibility through statutory name exemption is matched by the Maple Leaf's qualification through purity, so both work for US retirement accounts.
