About the Rand Refinery Minted Bars Gold

LBMA-Accredited Gold Bars from the Krugerrand's Refinery

Rand Refinery minted gold bars come from the same South African facility that produces the blanks for the Gold Krugerrand. Established in 1920 by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines and operational since 1921, Rand Refinery has processed over 50,000 tonnes of gold, roughly one-third of all gold ever mined in history. It holds LBMA Good Delivery accreditation dating back to 1921 and is the only precious metals refinery in Africa with that status.

The minted bar range launched in 2012, expanding Rand Refinery's retail product line beyond the cast bars and Krugerrand blanks that had been its core business. These are 999.9 fine gold bars, a full step up in purity from the Krugerrand's traditional 916.7 fineness (22 karat). The range spans multiple weights: 10g, 50g, 100g, and the most popular size, the 1oz.

Each bar carries an individual serial number prefixed "RR", is sealed in tamper-evident "Black Assay" packaging, and bears the LBMA certification mark. The reverse features a Springbok antelope design with a repeating elephant motif background, with the word "LOXODONTA" (the genus of the African elephant) adding a distinctive cultural touch unique among LBMA refiner bars. Rand Refinery bars are owned by five major South African mining companies: AngloGold Ashanti, Sibanye Gold, DRDGOLD, Harmony, and Gold Fields.

On the international market, Rand Refinery bars typically trade at lower premiums than Swiss competitors like PAMP Suisse or Valcambi. The LBMA accreditation ensures worldwide dealer acceptance, and the century-long refining history provides institutional credibility. For buyers seeking a 999.9 gold bar from an established refiner at competitive pricing, the Rand Refinery minted bar is a straightforward option.

Rand Refinery Gold Bar Tax Treatment by Country

Rand Refinery minted bars are not legal tender; their value derives from gold content and LBMA accreditation. This places them in the standard investment gold bar category across all jurisdictions.

United Kingdom

Gold bars of 995+ fineness from LBMA-accredited refiners are VAT-free as investment gold. Rand Refinery bars qualify. They are not CGT-exempt because bar products never qualify for the UK CGT exemption (only UK legal tender coins do). Profits from selling Rand Refinery bars are subject to CGT at the individual's rate (18% or 24%), after the annual allowance of £3,000. UK buyers who want CGT exemption must choose coins such as the Gold Britannia or Gold Sovereign. Gold bars are eligible for SIPP pensions, where they benefit from tax relief and CGT shelter within the pension wrapper.

United States

Rand Refinery gold bars are IRA-eligible. The 999.9 purity exceeds the IRS minimum of 99.5%, and LBMA-accredited bars are widely accepted by IRA custodians. Bullion is taxed as a collectible at a maximum 28% federal rate on long-term capital gains. State sales tax varies; roughly 35 states exempt bullion from sales tax.

South Africa

Investment gold is VAT-exempt in South Africa. Capital gains tax applies; individuals face a 40% inclusion rate (40% of the gain is added to income and taxed at the marginal rate).

Canada

Gold bars of 99.5%+ purity are GST/HST-exempt. Rand Refinery bars qualify and are eligible for RRSP and TFSA accounts.

European Union

VAT-exempt under the EU Investment Gold Directive. Gold bars of 995+ fineness accepted by bullion markets qualify.

Australia and New Zealand

Investment gold of 99.5%+ purity is GST-free in Australia. New Zealand exempts gold of 99.5%+ purity in bar form from its 15% GST.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore classifies gold bars of 99.5%+ purity as Investment Precious Metals (0% GST). Hong Kong has no sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax on bullion.

Rand Refinery vs PAMP Suisse, Perth Mint, and Krugerrand

In the gold bar market, Rand Refinery competes with established Swiss and Australian rivals. All are LBMA-accredited and produce 999.9 fine gold bars with individual serialisation and tamper-evident packaging. The practical differences come down to brand premium, security technology, and regional availability.

PAMP Suisse is the most recognised name in gold bars globally. The Lady Fortuna design is iconic, and PAMP's Veriscan digital verification system allows each bar to be authenticated through a smartphone app by matching the surface topology against a database. Rand Refinery bars have no equivalent digital verification. PAMP bars typically command a higher premium over spot price, reflecting that brand strength. For buyers who want LBMA-quality gold at the lowest available premium, Rand Refinery offers a cost advantage.

Perth Mint gold bars share the same 999.9 purity, LBMA accreditation, and sovereign-mint backing (the Perth Mint is a state government enterprise). Perth Mint bars feature a kangaroo design and CertiCard packaging. Perth Mint has stronger recognition in Asia-Pacific markets; Rand Refinery dominates in Africa and has strong distribution in the Middle East. In Western markets (US, UK, EU), both trade at similar premiums, below PAMP Suisse.

The comparison with the Gold Krugerrand is particularly interesting because both products come from the same production chain. Rand Refinery produces the gold blanks that the South African Mint strikes into Krugerrands. The Krugerrand is 22 karat (916.7 fine), a coin with legal tender status and the most globally recognised gold coin by unit sales. The Rand Refinery bar is 24 karat (999.9 fine), a bar with no legal tender status but higher purity. For South African buyers, the Krugerrand benefits from specific VAT zero-rating that does not extend to bars. For US buyers, the Rand Refinery bar's 999.9 purity makes it IRA-eligible, while the Krugerrand's 916.7 fineness also meets the IRS threshold (since American Eagle coins, which are also 916.7, are specifically exempted).

Rand Refinery Minted Bars Gold: frequently asked questions

Minted bars are precision-cut from rolled gold sheet and stamped with sharp edges, a uniform finish, and clear markings. They differ from cast bars, which are poured into moulds and have a rougher, more irregular surface. Rand Refinery produces both types; these pages cover their minted range, which includes a springbok design on the reverse and comes in tamper-evident assay packaging.
Minted bars typically carry a modestly higher premium over spot than cast bars of the same weight, reflecting the additional processing and branded assay packaging. The gap narrows at larger weights and varies by dealer. Rand Refinery's cast bars (traditional London Good Delivery format) are primarily an institutional product; their minted range was introduced in 2012 for retail investors.
The live gold spot price is $4,171.00. Each Rand Refinery minted bar's value is calculated as spot multiplied by the bar's weight in troy ounces, with a dealer premium added on top. Heavier bars generally carry a lower premium per ounce than smaller weights.
Yes. Rand Refinery minted gold bars are .9999 fine gold, which is 24 karat. Each bar carries its purity and weight engraved on the face and is certified by an assay card included in the tamper-evident packaging.
