About the 1/2 oz Maple Leaf Platinum Coin

The 1/2 oz Platinum Maple Leaf from the Royal Canadian Mint

The 1/2 oz Platinum Maple Leaf contains 15.5518 grams of 999.5 fine platinum, struck as Canadian legal tender with a face value of C$20. The Royal Canadian Mint launched the Platinum Maple Leaf in 1988, making it one of the earliest sovereign platinum coin programmes. The 1/2 oz denomination was part of the original fractional lineup alongside the 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz sizes.

The 1/2 oz represents a practical middle ground in the Platinum Maple Leaf range. It offers a meaningful quantity of platinum at roughly half the outlay of a 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf, with a premium penalty that is moderate compared to the steep markups on 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz fractionals. For buyers who want to build a platinum position through regular purchases but find the 1 oz price point too high for each transaction, the 1/2 oz is the most cost-efficient fractional option.

Production of fractional Platinum Maple Leafs has been intermittent. The original fractional sizes ran from 1988 to 2001, were discontinued when platinum prices rose sharply, and have been selectively reissued in subsequent years. This means specific year-dates may be available only on the secondary market. The RCM's Bullion DNA verification system, available on coins dated 2014 and later, provides individual coin-level authentication through an encrypted database, a security feature unique to the Maple Leaf programme among platinum coins.

The Maple Leaf's iconic reverse design has remained essentially unchanged since the programme began in 1979. From 2015 onward, radial lines were added across the background field, creating a light-diffracting pattern. Post-2014 coins include the micro-engraved laser mark (visible only under magnification) that forms the basis of the Bullion DNA authentication system. At 25.0 mm, the 1/2 oz is close in size to a UK 10p coin and sits comfortably in standard coin capsules.

Tax Treatment of the 1/2 oz Platinum Maple Leaf

The Maple Leaf's tax treatment is identical across denominations. The 1/2 oz follows the same rules as the 1 oz and fractional sizes.

  • Canada: GST/HST exempt for platinum at 99.5%+ purity. Physical platinum cannot be held in an RRSP or TFSA. Capital gains taxed at the 50% inclusion rate.
  • United States: IRA-eligible. The 999.5 fineness exceeds the 99.95% minimum for platinum in a self-directed IRA, held by an approved custodian. Capital gains at up to 28% (collectibles rate). Sales tax exemption varies by state.
  • United Kingdom: Subject to 20% VAT on purchase. Subject to CGT on disposal. For CGT-exempt platinum, UK buyers should consider the 1 oz Platinum Britannia (no 1/2 oz Platinum Britannia exists).
  • Australia: GST-free for platinum at 99%+ purity. CGT with a 50% discount for holdings over 12 months.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt at 99%+ purity. No CGT.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt as IPM. No CGT.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no duties, no CGT.
  • EU: Subject to standard VAT (17-27%). No investment platinum exemption.
  • South Africa: 15% VAT. No platinum exemption.

1/2 oz Platinum Maple Leaf vs Other Half-Ounce Platinum

The 1/2 oz platinum coin market is limited to a handful of products. The 1/2 oz Platinum Koala is the most direct competitor, also carrying 999.5 fineness. The Koala's annual design changes provide variety that the Maple Leaf's fixed design does not, but the Koala's platinum programme ended in 2000, making it secondary-market only. The Maple Leaf offers the possibility of newly minted coins (when the RCM produces fractionals) and the Bullion DNA authentication system.

The American Platinum Eagle is available in a 1/2 oz size with a US$50 face value. In the US market, the Eagle has the strongest brand recognition and the most liquid resale market. The Maple Leaf typically trades at slightly lower premiums than the Eagle, which can make it a better value for buyers who prioritise cost over US brand familiarity.

At the 1/2 oz weight, the premium penalty over 1 oz coins is moderate, typically 2-4 percentage points higher. This is a much smaller gap than the 10-15 percentage point penalty for stepping down to 1/10 oz. Buyers deciding between one 1 oz coin and two 1/2 oz coins should weigh the flexibility benefit (two separate resale events possible) against the slightly higher per-ounce cost. For platinum specifically, where the resale market is thinner than gold, having two smaller coins rather than one larger one can be advantageous if partial liquidation is ever needed.

The 1/4 oz Platinum Maple Leaf is the next step down in the range. The premium jump from 1/2 oz to 1/4 oz is more pronounced than from 1 oz to 1/2 oz, making the 1/2 oz the sweet spot for buyers who need fractional platinum without excessive premium erosion.
