About the 1 oz Building Blocks Silver Bar
Stackable Silver That Interlocks Like Building Blocks
The 1 oz Monarch Precious Metals Building Blocks silver bar is a novelty bullion product designed to interlock with other bars in the series. Each bar has raised nubs on one side and matching indented sockets on the other, allowing bars to click together in the same way as toy building blocks. The interlocking mechanism uses a 2x4 nub layout (two rows of four), with the weight, purity, and "FINE SILVER" stamped between the nubs on the obverse.
Monarch Precious Metals was founded in 2008 in Phoenix, Oregon, when the owners of a local coin shop, Oregon Coin and Jewelry, struggled to source silver bullion during the financial crisis demand surge. They began hand-pouring their own silver bars in a small warehouse, and the company grew from there. The Building Blocks series represents a departure from Monarch's hand-poured heritage, using precision striking to achieve the tight tolerances required for the interlocking mechanism.
The 1 oz bar is part of a range that includes 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 10 oz sizes. An important compatibility note: the 10 oz bar uses different nub spacing and will not connect with the smaller bars. Buyers planning to build a unified structure across all sizes should be aware of this limitation. A walnut wood display base is sold separately for presenting stacked arrangements.
At .999 fine silver, the bar contains genuine investment-grade silver. The high premiums relative to generic bars reflect the manufacturing complexity and novelty factor. These bars are bought primarily for the physical interaction with silver, and they make popular gifts for introducing younger people to precious metals. For pure silver accumulation at the lowest cost per ounce, standard bars from established refiners remain more efficient.

Bundled Kits
Monarch sells several kits for the series. The Starter Kit contains twelve 1 oz bars (12 oz total). The Planner Pack contains twenty-four 1/2 oz bars (12 oz total). The Accessory Set contains forty mixed bars at 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 oz (12 oz total). Each kit is designed around a 12 oz total weight. A solid walnut wood building base is available separately as a display platform.
Tax Considerations for Monarch Building Blocks Silver
As private mint silver bars with no legal tender status, Building Blocks bars receive the standard tax treatment for silver bullion. The novelty design does not affect their tax classification.
United Kingdom
Subject to 20% VAT on purchase. Not CGT-exempt (no legal tender status). These bars are imported from the US, so UK buyers also face shipping costs and potential import logistics. UK buyers focused on tax efficiency would find better options in domestically available products.
United States
No federal sales tax. State tax exemptions for bullion apply in most states; Monarch's home state of Oregon has no sales tax at all. The bars are not typically IRA-eligible. Private mint bars without government backing may not meet custodian requirements, though some custodians accept .999 silver bars from recognised mints. Buyers should verify with their specific custodian before purchasing for IRA purposes. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.
Canada
Subject to GST/HST. The .999 purity meets the threshold for exemption under certain interpretations, though private mint products may face scrutiny.
Australia and New Zealand
Australia exempts silver at .999+ purity from GST. New Zealand exempts silver at .999+ purity from GST. The bars meet both purity thresholds, though limited availability in these markets makes them an uncommon purchase.
Building Blocks vs Other Novelty and Standard Silver Bars
The Building Blocks bar occupies a unique niche. There is no directly equivalent interlocking silver bar from another manufacturer, making the comparison less about like-for-like alternatives and more about what buyers sacrifice for the novelty factor.
vs Scottsdale Mint Stacker Rounds
Scottsdale Mint produces stacker rounds that nest vertically when stacked. The Monarch Building Blocks interlock horizontally and vertically via nub-and-socket, offering more creative arrangement possibilities. Scottsdale's products are .999 fine silver from a larger, more widely recognised private mint. The stacker concept is simpler (vertical nesting vs interlocking grids) but the Scottsdale name carries stronger secondary-market recognition.
vs Generic 1 oz Silver Bars
A standard generic 1 oz silver bar from Sunshine Minting or SilverTowne carries premiums of roughly 5-10% over spot. Building Blocks bars carry significantly higher premiums due to the novelty design and precision manufacturing. For buyers whose goal is maximising silver weight, generic bars deliver more metal per dollar. Building Blocks are for buyers who value the physical experience of interlocking silver or are purchasing gifts.
vs Fractional Silver Coins
The Building Blocks series includes fractional sizes down to 1/8 oz. At those sizes, premiums can exceed 100% over spot, making them expensive relative to their silver content. A fractional government-minted coin, such as a 1/2 oz sovereign mint coin, would be legal tender with potential tax advantages in some jurisdictions, but lacks the interlocking novelty. The fractional Building Blocks are collector items and gifts, not cost-efficient bullion.

Monarch Precious Metals designed the Building Blocks bar with raised nubs on the obverse that fit into indented sockets on the reverse of another bar, allowing them to interlock horizontally and vertically. The 1oz bar uses a 2x4 nub layout, echoing toy building block proportions. Monarch uses the term "Building Block" rather than any trademarked name; the relevant toy-block patents have expired.

Each bar contains 1 oz of 999 fine silver, equivalent to 31.1 grams. The weight, purity, and "FINE SILVER" designation are stamped directly on the obverse between the nubs. There is no assay card or serial number; authentication relies on weight and visual inspection.
