About the Bödvar Saga Silver

Germania Mint's Norse Warrior Narrative Series

The Bodvar Saga is a multi-year storytelling coin programme from Germania Mint, launched in 2026. It tells the story of Bodvar, a Norse warrior whose village is destroyed and whose daughter is abducted, setting him on a path of vengeance and justice. Each annual release represents a chapter in the saga, making it one of the few bullion series with a serialised narrative structure rather than standalone thematic designs.

The 2026 inaugural chapter is titled "Loss" and depicts the moment Bodvar finds his wife Astrid dying amid the flames of their village, learning from her last words that their daughter Sunneva has been taken. The series is designed by Mateusz Frackowiak and planned to continue through at least 2028, with future chapter titles yet to be announced.

Four variants of the first chapter are available. The 1 oz silver BU carries a 5 Mark denomination (Germania Mint's fantasy currency) with a mintage of 5,000 pieces. A "Vengeful" variant of the same design is limited to 999 pieces. The 2 oz ultra-high relief antiqued version has a mintage of just 500 and includes black light (UV-reactive) colour elements that reveal hidden design details under ultraviolet light. A 1 oz copper BU completes the range.

All silver versions are struck at .9999 fine (four nines), a purity that matches the Canadian Maple Leaf and exceeds the .999 standard used by most mints. The "Mark" denomination has no legal tender status in any country. Germania Mint is a private operation based in Germany with production facilities in Poland, so these are legally classified as silver rounds or medals rather than coins, despite the coin-like format and denomination.

Each coin ships with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity in a protective capsule with styled sleeve artwork. The 2 oz ultra-high relief version features UV-reactive (black light) colour elements, an unusual feature in bullion coinage that adds a hidden verification layer visible only under ultraviolet illumination. The depth and detail of the UHR striking would be extremely difficult to replicate convincingly in a counterfeit.

The reverse design across all variants features Mount Thorbjorn ("Thor's bear"), a rocky massif rendered in the shape of a roaring bear. The Sowilo rune, associated with the sun and victory in Norse tradition, is carved on the bear's forehead. A runic circle borders the outer ring, and a small shield bearing Germania Mint's double-headed eagle hallmark appears within a frame of bear teeth.

Tax Implications for Private Mint Silver Rounds

The Bodvar Saga carries a "Mark" denomination that is Germania Mint's own creation, not the currency of any sovereign state. These are legally classified as silver rounds or medals, not legal tender coins. This distinction affects tax treatment in several jurisdictions.

In the United Kingdom, silver rounds attract 20% VAT on purchase. There is no route to CGT exemption, as that benefit requires UK legal tender status. The margin scheme cannot apply to new rounds from the mint, though it may apply if the rounds are later sold as pre-owned items.

In the United States, silver rounds from private mints are not IRA-eligible. IRS Section 408(m) requires either sovereign mint coins meeting the purity threshold or bars from NYMEX/COMEX-approved refiners. Germania Mint does not hold that accreditation, so the .9999 purity alone is insufficient. Sales tax varies by state, with most states exempting precious metals regardless of form.

In Germany, where Germania Mint has its roots, silver is subject to the standard 19% VAT. The differential taxation scheme (Differenzbesteuerung under Section 25a of the German VAT Act) may apply if dealers import and resell these as pre-owned/imported items, reducing the effective tax burden.

Canada exempts silver at .999+ purity from GST/HST regardless of whether it is a coin or round, so the Bodvar Saga qualifies. Australia exempts investment-grade silver at .999+ purity in tradeable form from GST. New Zealand exempts fine silver at .999+ from GST. Singapore applies its IPM exemption to silver bars at .999+ purity of at least 0.5 troy oz, which may cover rounds depending on classification. Hong Kong has no sales tax on silver in any form.

Bodvar Saga vs Other Norse-Themed and Germania Mint Silver

Norse mythology and Viking themes are well-represented in the modern bullion market. The Bodvar Saga's distinguishing feature is its serialised narrative: each release continues a story rather than depicting standalone figures from mythology.

The Perth Mint Norse Gods series features individual deities (Thor, Odin, Loki) as Tuvaluan legal tender. These coins have higher mintages (50,000+), sovereign mint backing, and stronger secondary market liquidity. The Perth Mint coins are thematically Norse but lack the narrative continuity that connects one Bodvar Saga release to the next.

Within Germania Mint's own catalogue, the Allegories series is the most established line. The Allegories feature classical female figures with similar mintage levels and the same .9999 purity. Both series share Germania Mint's in-house design and packaging capabilities. The Allegories offer standalone collectibility (each coin works on its own), and the Bodvar Saga creates a narrative dependency where the value of the set grows as new chapters are released.

The Scottsdale Mint Viking series covers similar thematic ground with Viking warriors and ships. Scottsdale products use .999 purity and vary in legal tender status depending on the issuing authority. The Bodvar Saga's .9999 purity gives it a marginal technical edge, though practical significance is minimal for bullion purposes.

The 5,000-piece standard mintage and 500-piece UHR mintage place the Bodvar Saga firmly in collector territory. For comparison, mainstream bullion coins are produced in the hundreds of thousands to millions. Buyers should expect premiums well above spot and limited secondary market liquidity compared to sovereign mint products. The series is best suited to collectors of Germania Mint products, Norse-themed bullion enthusiasts, and buyers who value the serialised storytelling format over pure metal accumulation efficiency.

Bödvar Saga Silver: frequently asked questions

The Bödvar Saga is a multi-year narrative silver coin series from Germania Mint, launched in 2026. Each annual release tells one chapter of a Norse warrior's story, beginning with "Loss," which depicts the moment Bodvar's village is destroyed. Coins are struck to .9999 fine silver and come in 1 oz bullion, a limited 1 oz "Vengeful" variant (999 pieces), and a 2 oz ultra-high-relief antiqued version with UV colour elements.
We currently track 6 Bödvar Saga listings across 2 dealers. As a newer niche series from a private mint, availability is more limited than mainstream sovereign coins. The comparison table above shows which dealers have stock and their current prices.
Bars typically carry lower premiums over spot than coins, making them more cost-efficient when buying purely for silver content. Coins from sovereign mints carry legal tender status, which can affect tax treatment in some countries and often makes them easier to resell. Private mint coins like the Bödvar Saga sit between the two: .9999 fine silver with collector appeal, but no legal tender status and generally higher premiums than standard bars.
Germania Mint coins are private mint silver rounds with no legal tender status, so standard silver VAT rules apply in most markets. In the UK, silver carries 20%; in Germany and across most of the EU, silver is subject to local VAT rates (though Germany's differential taxation scheme may reduce the effective rate for dealers using it). In Canada, investment-grade silver meeting purity thresholds is GST-exempt at 0%.
