About the Germania Beasts Silver

Norse Mythological Creatures in .9999 Fine Silver

The Germania Beasts is a silver round series from Germania Mint featuring mythological creatures drawn from Germanic and Norse legend. Launched in 2020 with Fafnir the dragon, the series has released three creatures through 2025: Fafnir, Fenrir (the monstrous wolf), and Gullinbursti (the golden-bristled boar). Each round is struck in .9999 fine silver, a purity level that exceeds the .999 standard used by most private mint competitors.

Germania Mint operates from facilities in Poland under German ownership. The mint has built a strong reputation in the European bullion market for detailed engraving, tamper-evident packaging, and collectible series. The Beasts series is available in three tiers: standard 1oz BU rounds, a Geminus format (two matched 1 oz rounds whose designs connect across the pair), and 2oz Ultra High Relief (UHR) editions. The 2 oz coins carry various mint-of-origin legal tender denominations, while the rounds use a nominal "Mark" denomination with no government backing.

The Geminus concept is a signature Germania Mint innovation. Two 1 oz rounds are designed so that when placed side by side, their images form a single continuous scene. The dragon wraps from one round to the next; the wolf spans both halves. This paired format is unusual in the bullion market, where products are almost exclusively sold as individual pieces. For collectors who appreciate design continuity, the Geminus sets offer something that standard rounds cannot.

Mintage for the BU rounds has been set at 25,000 per creature, a level that keeps supply constrained without pushing the product into numismatic territory. The series is available from major US and European dealers, with each round shipping in a protective capsule accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

The .9999 purity is a genuine differentiator. Most competing silver rounds, including those from Sunshine Minting and SilverTowne, use .999 (three nines). The four-nines standard matches the purity of the Silver Maple Leaf, the global benchmark for high-purity silver. For tax purposes, the higher purity meets the stricter thresholds applied in jurisdictions like Australia and New Zealand, where the GST-free cutoff for silver is 99.9%.

The "Mark" denomination carries no monetary backing from any government. Germania Mint uses it as a nominal unit for its round series, similar to how other private mints use "dollar" or "unit" denominations without legal tender status. The distinction matters for tax treatment and IRA eligibility, as discussed in the Tax tab.

Germania Beasts Tax Treatment by Country

Germania Beasts rounds are private mint products. The "Mark" denomination is nominal and not backed by any government, which means they are treated as non-legal-tender silver bullion in all jurisdictions. This distinction from sovereign mint coins affects tax treatment in several markets.

  • United States: Private mint rounds are generally not IRA-eligible, as IRS Section 408(m) requires either government-issued coins or bars and rounds produced by refineries accredited by NYMEX/COMEX or approved by the IRS. Germania Mint does not hold these accreditations. State sales tax exemptions for investment silver apply in roughly 35 states regardless of legal tender status. Capital gains on silver are taxed at the collectibles rate of 28% maximum for long-term holdings.
  • United Kingdom: Silver rounds without legal tender status attract 20% VAT. No CGT exemption applies. The VAT treatment is the same as for any non-legal-tender silver product, including bars and generic rounds. Pre-owned pieces may be available through the margin scheme from some dealers.
  • EU/Germany: Despite the German branding, Germania Mint is not a German government institution. In Germany, silver rounds attract 19% VAT. The differential tax scheme (Differenzbesteuerung under Section 25a of the German VAT Act) may apply through some dealers for pre-owned or imported silver, reducing the effective tax burden. VAT rates vary across EU member states, from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary.
  • Canada: Silver at 99.9% purity or above is exempt from GST/HST regardless of legal tender status. The .9999 Germania Beasts rounds meet this threshold. Capital gains at the 50% inclusion rate.
  • Australia: Silver at 99.9% purity or above qualifies as GST-free investment-grade precious metal. The .9999 rounds meet this requirement. Capital gains tax applies with a 50% discount for holdings over 12 months.
  • Singapore: Investment Precious Metals criteria for silver coins require legal tender status. As private rounds, the Germania Beasts may not qualify under the coin IPM category. Silver bars at 99.9% purity and 0.5 troy oz minimum are also eligible, but rounds may fall between categories. No capital gains tax applies regardless.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax.

Dragons, Wolves, and Golden Boars from Germanic Legend

Each creature in the Germania Beasts series draws from a specific mythological source, and the design choices encode more than decorative appeal.

Fafnir (2020): The series opener is a dragon from the Volsunga Saga, a 13th-century Icelandic text that preserves much older Germanic oral tradition. Fafnir was originally a dwarf prince who was transformed into a dragon by his consuming greed after guarding a cursed treasure hoard. The hero Sigurd eventually slayed Fafnir and gained supernatural wisdom by tasting the dragon's blood. Richard Wagner adapted the story in his Ring Cycle operas, making Fafnir (as "Fafner") one of the most recognisable figures in Western mythological storytelling. On the round, the dragon's body wraps continuously from obverse to reverse; when flipped, the design resembles an infinity symbol. The 1 oz BU mintage was 25,000.

Fenrir (2022): The monstrous wolf of Norse mythology, son of the trickster god Loki. Fenrir grew so large and powerful that the gods feared him and attempted to bind him. The magical chain Gleipnir, crafted from impossible ingredients (the sound of a cat's footstep, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the breath of a fish, the spittle of a bird, and the sinews of a bear), was the only thing that could hold him. Fenrir is prophesied to break free at Ragnarok and devour Odin, the Allfather. The round's design shows Fenrir's upper half on one side and lower half on the other, creating a complete image when the round is viewed as a continuous surface.

Gullinbursti (2025): The golden-maned boar was crafted by the dwarven brothers Sindri and Brokkr as a gift for the god Freyr. The commission arose from a wager between Loki and the dwarves. Loki, having bet his head that the dwarves could not create gifts finer than those of the Sons of Ivaldi, attempted to sabotage the work by stinging Brokkr in the form of a fly. Despite the interference, Gullinbursti was completed. The boar could run through air and water faster than any horse and its golden bristles illuminated the darkest night. Additional premium variants include a Gold and Black Edition Geminus set.

Germania Mint describes the series as carrying "a warning" with "every myth holding a grain of truth." The three creatures represent distinct archetypes: destructive greed (Fafnir), apocalyptic chaos (Fenrir), and divine craftsmanship (Gullinbursti). Future releases are planned for 2026 and beyond, though specific creatures have not been announced.

Germania Beasts vs Queen's Beasts and Other Mythological Series

The Germania Beasts occupies the mythological creature niche in the silver bullion market, a space with several established competitors. The key comparisons centre on legal tender status, purity, and the design ambition of the series.

The most prominent rival is the Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts (2016-2021). That series featured ten heraldic beasts from the British royal lineage, struck as legal tender coins in .9999 fine silver with GBP face values. The Queen's Beasts coins are CGT-exempt in the UK, IRA-eligible in the US, and carry the credibility of one of the world's oldest sovereign mints. The Germania Beasts, as private mint rounds, have none of these advantages. The Beasts rounds cannot match the Queen's Beasts on resale liquidity or institutional acceptance. Germania Mint's counterpoint is the depth of its mythological source material (Norse sagas rather than heraldic tradition) and the Geminus paired-design format, which the Royal Mint has not replicated.

Among Germania Mint's own catalogue, the Beasts sits alongside the Allegories series (human figures), the Witchcraft series, and the flagship Germania series. The Beasts is distinguished by its focus on creatures rather than people, and by the continuous obverse-to-reverse design that becomes the creature's full form when the round is viewed as a whole. Collectors often buy across multiple Germania Mint series, so these products are complementary rather than competitive.

Against generic private mint rounds from Sunshine Minting, SilverTowne, and others, the Germania Beasts trades at a noticeable premium. Generic rounds prioritise lowest-possible cost per ounce; the Beasts series adds design complexity, limited mintages, tamper-evident packaging, and the .9999 purity upgrade. For a buyer measuring value strictly in ounces per dollar, generic rounds are more efficient. For a buyer who wants their silver to carry a specific cultural narrative and collectable identity, the Germania Beasts offers substance that a featureless generic disc does not.

The .9999 purity is shared with the Silver Maple Leaf and several Perth Mint products, but it is unusual for a private mint round. Most competing rounds are .999 (three nines). This distinction has real tax implications: in Australia and New Zealand, only silver at 99.9% or above qualifies for GST exemption. The extra nine makes the Germania Beasts eligible where three-nines rounds might not be.
