About the The Awakening Series Silver

Sunshine Minting's Anti-Establishment High-Relief Silver Rounds

The Awakening Series is a collection of high-relief silver rounds with satirical financial and anti-establishment themes, produced by Sunshine Minting (Sunshine Mint). Launched in 2021 with the "Infinity" design in 5 oz format, the series expanded to 2 oz versions in 2022 and has continued with new designs exploring themes of corruption in government and financial institutions, the concept of liberty, and public awareness of monetary manipulation.

Each round is struck in .9999 fine silver with individually numbered edges, adding a collectible dimension beyond the metal content. The edge numbering runs sequentially from 1 to the mintage cap, providing traceability and proof of limited production. The 5 oz versions had micro-mintages of just 2,000 pieces per design, while the 2 oz versions expanded to 20,000 per design to reach a broader audience.

Sunshine Minting is one of the largest private mints in the United States and produces silver and gold blanks (planchets) for the US Mint's American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle programmes. The Awakening rounds are struck by the same facility that manufactures America's flagship bullion coin, lending them manufacturing quality that exceeds most private-mint competitors.

The series' unifying motif is an all-seeing eye atop a pyramid on the reverse of every piece, echoing the Great Seal imagery on the US dollar bill. Beneath it appears "MDCCLXXVI" (1776 in Roman numerals), connecting the American Revolution's liberty ideals to the series' modern themes of financial freedom. A Navajo proverb runs along the reverse: "You can't wake a person who is pretending to be asleep," encapsulating the series' thesis that public ignorance of financial manipulation is partly wilful. These are not legal tender in any jurisdiction; they are classified as silver rounds for all tax and regulatory purposes.

Tax Treatment for Private Silver Rounds

The Awakening rounds carry no legal tender status from any sovereign authority. They are private-mint rounds, and their tax treatment follows the general rules for silver bullion in each jurisdiction. The .9999 purity meets the threshold for exemptions in most countries that offer them.

United States

Sales tax varies by state. The .9999 fineness qualifies for precious metals exemptions in the approximately 35 states that exempt bullion. For IRA purposes, the rounds are IRA-eligible based on .9999 purity and production by a COMEX-approved refiner (Sunshine Minting). Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% for long-term holdings.

United Kingdom

Silver rounds are subject to 20% VAT at point of sale. No CGT exemption applies (not UK legal tender). The Awakening rounds are niche products in the UK market, typically available only through US dealers with international shipping, which adds import VAT and duty on top of the purchase price.

Canada

Silver at 99.9%+ purity is GST/HST-exempt under the Excise Tax Act. The .9999 purity meets this threshold. Capital gains are subject to the 50% inclusion rate.

Australia and New Zealand

Both countries require 99.9%+ purity for silver GST exemption. The .9999 purity of the Awakening rounds (except the .999 House of Cards) qualifies. Australia applies 10% GST to non-qualifying silver; New Zealand applies 15% GST. The House of Cards at .999 sits exactly on the threshold and should also qualify in both jurisdictions.

Awakening vs Silver Shield and Other Anti-Establishment Rounds

The Awakening Series' closest thematic competitor is the Silver Shield programme from Golden State Mint, which has been producing anti-establishment silver rounds since 2012. Silver Shield rounds explore similar themes around monetary freedom, government overreach, and financial system criticism. The Awakening differentiates through several factors: Sunshine Minting's institutional production quality, the high-relief finish, .9999 purity (versus .999 for Silver Shield), and individually edge-numbered pieces with traceable mintage limits.

Against standard bullion rounds, the comparison is primarily economic. Generic silver rounds trade at premiums of 8-15% over spot. The Awakening commands significantly higher premiums due to limited mintage, high-relief production costs, and collectible appeal. Buyers focused purely on silver accumulation per dollar will find generic rounds, or products like the Texas Silver Round, deliver better value per ounce.

Against government-issued bullion, the Awakening lacks legal tender status and the universal dealer liquidity of sovereign coins. The American Silver Eagle, Silver Maple Leaf, and Silver Britannia are accepted by every bullion dealer worldwide, command consistent buyback prices, and enjoy established secondary markets. The Awakening rounds appeal to a specific audience: collectors and stackers drawn to the themes, the high-relief aesthetics, and the numbered limited editions.

The high-relief finish is worth noting as a production choice. High relief requires more metal and more striking pressure than standard bullion production, which contributes to both the visual appeal and the higher cost. The 2 oz format is uncommon for private-mint rounds (most are 1 oz), giving the Awakening a larger canvas for the intricate designs while keeping the price point below the 5 oz versions. For buyers who appreciate the artistry of bullion production as well as the metal content, the Awakening offers a level of detail and depth that flat-struck generic rounds cannot match.
