1/10 oz Gold Round: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 1/10 oz gold round tracked on this page is $446.51, at around 7.1% over spot, from Copper State Coin. Prices vary by design and issuer, but all rounds on this page contain 1/10 troy oz of .9999 fine gold.
One-tenth of a troy ounce of gold is 1/10 oz, or 3.1103 grams. Note that troy ounces (used for precious metals) differ from avoirdupois ounces used in everyday weighing: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, not 28.35 grams.
Gold rounds are privately minted discs of fine gold with no government backing, no face value, and no legal-tender status. Gold coins are struck by a sovereign or government mint, carry a face value, and are legal tender in their issuing country. Rounds typically trade at lower premiums than coins because there is no collector or legal-tender premium, but they are not government-guaranteed.
Fabrication costs (blanking, striking, packaging, assay) are largely fixed per coin regardless of size. Spreading those fixed costs over a smaller gold content means each gram of gold in a 1/10 oz round carries a greater share of manufacturing expense than in a 1 oz piece. The current premium on the cheapest 1/10 oz round tracked here is around 7.1% over spot.
