About the Polar Bear Platinum

The Majestic Polar Bear in Platinum

The Polar Bear platinum coin from the Royal Canadian Mint is part of the RCM's Premium Bullion line, a tier above the standard Maple Leaf that combines limited mintages with annually changing wildlife designs. Platinum versions of the Polar Bear are produced in smaller quantities than their silver counterparts, targeting collectors and platinum investors who want a sovereign-minted coin with distinctive Canadian Arctic imagery.

The series debuted in 2022 as a silver coin, with gold and platinum formats following. Each year features a different polar bear scene: the 2022 inaugural design depicted a single bear in an Arctic landscape, the 2023 issue showed a mother with cubs, and the 2024 release portrayed a mother and near-independent cub. The designs are rendered with a sunburst radial line finish that creates visual depth and doubles as an anti-counterfeiting feature.

Royal Canadian Mint Premium Bullion products sit between standard bullion (the Platinum Maple Leaf) and proof collector coins. Mintages are deliberately limited: the 2024 gold version was capped at 4,000 pieces, and platinum figures are comparably tight. This scarcity drives premiums above standard Maple Leaf pricing but offers the potential for collector appreciation as completed annual sets become available on the secondary market.

All Polar Bear coins carry .9999 purity in gold and 999.5 in platinum, with Canadian legal tender status and face values in Canadian dollars. The RCM's micro-laser engraved maple leaf privy mark appears on each coin as part of the standard security package. A distinctive design element exclusive to the Polar Bear Premium Bullion line is the polar bear paw print motif that appears on every coin in the series, creating a visual thread connecting the annual releases.

Design Elements

The reverse features annually changing polar bear scenes by different Canadian wildlife artists. The 2022 silver design was by Emily Damstra; the 2024 design by W. Allan Hancock. Each coin incorporates the polar bear paw print motif unique to this Premium Bullion line. The sunburst radial line background is both a visual trademark and a security measure that is difficult to replicate with precision.

The obverse transitioned from Susanna Blunt's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (2022 issues) to a new effigy of King Charles III on 2024 and later releases. The shift in monarch portraits makes the early Queen Elizabeth II issues potentially more collectible as the last of their type.

Polar Bear Platinum Tax Treatment

As Canadian legal tender from the Royal Canadian Mint, the Polar Bear platinum coins receive favourable tax treatment in several jurisdictions.

  • Canada: Platinum bullion at 99.5% purity or above is GST/HST-exempt in coin form. The Polar Bear's 999.5 fineness qualifies. Capital gains are taxed at the standard 50% inclusion rate. The coins are not eligible for direct holding in RRSP or TFSA accounts (bullion coins generally are not, unlike ETFs), despite meeting purity thresholds.
  • United States: The Polar Bear's .9995 platinum purity exceeds the IRS Section 408(m) minimum of 99.95% for platinum in IRAs. As a sovereign government coin with legal tender status, it should qualify for IRA inclusion through approved custodians. Most states exempt investment-grade precious metals from sales tax.
  • United Kingdom: Platinum coins attract 20% VAT on purchase regardless of origin. Not being UK legal tender, the Polar Bear does not qualify for CGT exemption. Capital gains are taxed at 18-24% with a GBP 3,000 annual allowance.
  • Australia: Platinum coins at 99% purity or above in forms traded on commodity markets are GST-free. The Polar Bear qualifies. Capital gains tax applies with the standard 50% discount for holdings exceeding 12 months.
  • Singapore: Platinum coins at 99% purity that are or were legal tender qualify as Investment Precious Metals, exempt from 9% GST. The Polar Bear meets these criteria. No capital gains tax.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax. Fully tax-free.

Polar Bear Platinum vs Other Premium Platinum Coins

The Polar Bear competes in a niche segment: premium-tier, limited-mintage platinum coins from sovereign mints. The field is small because most mints concentrate platinum production on their standard bullion lines rather than premium variants.

The most direct comparison within the RCM's own range is the Platinum Maple Leaf, the standard-issue platinum coin that has been in production since 1988. The Maple Leaf uses a fixed design, has higher mintages, trades at lower premiums, and offers greater liquidity on the secondary market. For buyers who prioritise metal accumulation at the lowest premium, the Maple Leaf is the more cost-effective option. The Polar Bear trades at higher premiums but offers annually changing designs, tighter mintages, and the Premium Bullion packaging that includes a QR code linking to the RCM's informational website.

Against the American Platinum Eagle, the Polar Bear offers comparable purity (.9995 for both) and legal tender status, but the Eagle has decades of market history and the deepest dealer network in North America. The Eagle's fixed design (no annual variation) and higher production volumes make it the default choice for platinum investors prioritising liquidity and low premiums.

The Platinum Britannia from the Royal Mint is the strongest competitor for UK-based buyers because of its CGT exemption as UK legal tender, a tax advantage no foreign coin can replicate. The Britannia's .9995 purity matches the Polar Bear, and its active annual production ensures consistent availability.

Among limited-mintage wildlife platinum coins, the Perth Mint's platinum offerings (including the Platinum Kangaroo) provide Australian sovereign-mint backing with similarly tight production numbers. The Perth Mint's longer track record in the bullion market gives its products stronger secondary market recognition than the relatively new Polar Bear series.
