About the Wonders of Australia Platinum

Perth Mint's Newest Platinum Coin Series

Wonders of Australia is a new annual bullion series launched by the Perth Mint in 2026, themed on Australia's natural landscapes and wildlife. The inaugural release, titled "The Outback," features a dynamic scene of outback fauna including a wedge-tailed eagle, emus, kangaroos, dingoes, crocodiles, and a frilled-neck lizard amid native flora and sandstone formations. The 1 oz platinum version is struck at 999.5 purity with a capped mintage of just 5,000 coins, making it one of the more limited platinum bullion offerings currently available from any sovereign mint.

The Perth Mint, wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia and LBMA-accredited, has been in operation since 1899, when it was established as the third Australian branch of Britain's Royal Mint to process gold from the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie gold rush. The mint has refined over 15,000 tonnes of gold in its history. Its platinum bullion offerings have been intermittent: the Platinum Kangaroo has been produced at various points but discontinued at times, making the Wonders of Australia a welcome addition for buyers seeking Perth Mint platinum.

The series is available across three metals from launch: gold (10,000 mintage), silver (75,000 mintage), and platinum (5,000 mintage). This three-metal offering from day one is relatively unusual for a new bullion series and is aimed at collectors who seek matched sets across precious metals. The platinum version's 5,000 mintage is notably low; for comparison, the silver version has 15 times the production volume.

As a 2026 launch, Wonders of Australia is one of the newest bullion series on the market. The series name and the "The Outback" subtitle for the inaugural release strongly suggest future annual themes covering different Australian natural landmarks or ecosystems. Buyers entering the platinum version in its first year have the potential advantage of holding a scarce inaugural issue in what may become a long-running Perth Mint programme.

The reverse design for the 2026 "Outback" release depicts a wedge-tailed eagle soaring with four companions in formation above a sweeping outback landscape. Below, emus stride across mountainous terrain alongside dingoes, crocodiles, kangaroos, and a frilled-neck lizard amid native flora, with sandstone formations and a watering hole completing the scene. The platinum version shares a similar wildlife composition with the silver and gold versions, with slightly different framing appropriate to the coin's dimensions.

The obverse carries the Dan Thorne effigy of King Charles III, which became the standard for Australian coinage following the transition from Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include the denomination, weight, and fineness.

The Perth Mint applies a micro-laser engraved letter as an anti-counterfeiting feature, visible only under magnification. This security measure is consistent with the mint's approach on its other modern bullion series and provides authentication that generic or private-mint products cannot match.

A separate proof collector edition exists in silver only, featuring an embedded opal gemstone and a more detailed design with additional creatures including a python, wolf spider, bilby, and echidnas. The proof version is distinct from the bullion issue and is not reflected in the specifications above.

Wonders of Australia Platinum Tax Treatment by Country

Australia

As legal tender of Australia under the Currency Act 1965, the Wonders of Australia platinum coin is GST-free. Australia exempts investment-grade precious metal coins at 99% purity or above from the 10% GST. The coin's 999.5 purity exceeds this threshold. Capital gains tax applies, with a 50% discount for individuals holding for more than 12 months.

United Kingdom

Platinum carries 20% VAT in the UK. The Wonders of Australia coin is not UK legal tender, so it does not qualify for CGT exemption. UK buyers who want CGT-exempt platinum are limited to the Platinum Britannia and Platinum Sovereign, both Royal Mint products with UK legal tender status. Some UK dealers offer VAT-free vault storage for platinum that remains in bonded facilities.

United States

The 999.5 purity meets the IRS minimum for platinum in a precious metals IRA (99.95%). Most states that exempt investment-grade bullion from sales tax will cover this coin. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.

Canada

Canada's GST/HST exemption for platinum requires 99% purity or above in coin form. The Wonders of Australia platinum coin qualifies. Capital gains are taxed at a 50% inclusion rate.

New Zealand

New Zealand exempts platinum at 99% purity or above from 15% GST. The coin qualifies. New Zealand has no formal capital gains tax, making it one of the most favourable jurisdictions for holding platinum bullion.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore's IPM scheme exempts platinum coins at 99% purity or above from 9% GST when they are or were legal tender. The Wonders of Australia qualifies as Australian legal tender at 999.5 purity. Hong Kong imposes no sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax on any precious metals.

Wonders of Australia Platinum vs Other Perth Mint and Sovereign Coins

The most direct comparison is with the Perth Mint's own Platinum Kangaroo, which has been the mint's primary platinum bullion product. The Kangaroo uses a fixed design that does not change annually and has had variable production schedules, with periods of discontinuation. The Wonders of Australia brings a new annual-design-change approach to Perth Mint platinum, similar to what the Platinum Lunar series has done with zodiac-themed designs. The 5,000 mintage for the Wonders of Australia platinum is lower than typical Kangaroo production, positioning it as a more limited product.

Against the broader market of sovereign platinum coins, the Wonders of Australia competes at the same 999.5 purity and 1 oz weight as the American Platinum Eagle, Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf, Platinum Britannia, and Platinum Philharmonic. It offers no purity or technical advantage over these established products. Its appeal lies in the design quality, the Perth Mint brand, the limited 5,000 mintage, and the potential for a new annual series to develop collector momentum.

The 5,000 mintage deserves context. The Perth Mint 125th Anniversary platinum coin also had a 5,000 mintage, and the Queen's Virtues platinum had limited production as well. In the platinum coin market, where total global investment demand was only 702,000 ounces in 2024, a 5,000-unit run represents a genuinely scarce issue. Buyers who acquire early-year releases of what becomes a successful long-running series often benefit from secondary market appreciation, as later collectors seek to complete full runs.

For Australian buyers, the domestic origin means easy availability through local dealers, GST-free purchase, and the Perth Mint's direct guarantee of weight and purity. For international buyers, particularly in the UK, the absence of CGT exemption is the main drawback compared to the Britannia. The decision comes down to whether design appeal and limited mintage outweigh the tax efficiency available from UK legal tender platinum coins.
