US Mint: frequently asked questions

The U.S. Mint strikes the American Gold Eagle, American Gold Buffalo, American Silver Eagle, and American Platinum Eagle as its core bullion coin programmes. The Gold Eagle is available in multiple sizes; the Gold Buffalo and Silver Eagle are primarily issued in 1 oz. The Mint also produces numismatic and proof versions of these coins for collectors.
Bullion coins are sold through the U.S. Mint's network of authorised purchasers, typically large wholesalers and dealers, who then sell to the public. The Mint does not sell bullion coins directly to the public at melt-based prices. Collector and proof versions of the same coins are available directly through the Mint's online store.
The U.S. Mint operates four coin-producing facilities: Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Denver (Colorado), San Francisco (California), and West Point (New York). Fort Knox (Kentucky) functions as a bullion depository rather than a coining facility. Historically, the U.S. has had more than a dozen mint locations, but these four are the active production sites today.
The U.S. Mint is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury. Its Director is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Day-to-day operations and coin production programmes fall under Treasury oversight, with Congress setting the authorising legislation for each coin series.
