About the Australian Wildlife Platinum

Perth Mint Australian Wildlife in Platinum

The Australian Wildlife label covers a range of Perth Mint bullion coins featuring native Australian animals outside the flagship Kangaroo, Koala, and Kookaburra programmes. In platinum, the category includes coins struck under sub-series like the Wedge-Tailed Eagle and various limited-edition wildlife issues. Perth Mint, government-owned by the State of Western Australia since 1899, produces these as Australian legal tender under the Currency Act, with 999.5 fine platinum meeting the universal standard for investment-grade platinum bullion.

Perth Mint's wildlife coins occupy a different space from the core sovereign platinum offerings. The Platinum Kangaroo is the fixed-design flagship, produced in high volumes for the pure investment market. The wildlife sub-series coins are lower mintage and feature annual design changes, giving them a collector-investment crossover appeal. The Wedge-Tailed Eagle, designed by John Mercanti (the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, in a notable cross-national collaboration), has run since 2014 with a new eagle design each year. The Emu programme, with a mintage cap of just 30,000 per year in silver, demonstrates Perth Mint's willingness to produce at volumes far below the American Eagle's millions.

The platinum investment market is small compared to gold or silver, with investment demand accounting for roughly 8.5% of total platinum usage. Within that market, wildlife-themed platinum coins represent a niche within a niche. Their appeal is for investors who want Australian sovereign platinum with annual design variety and the potential for collector premiums on the secondary market, rather than the pure bullion play of a fixed-design Maple Leaf or Britannia.

Australian Wildlife Platinum Tax Treatment

Perth Mint wildlife coins share the same tax profile as all Australian legal tender platinum coins. The 999.5 purity is standard across the range, and the legal tender status under the Australian Currency Act applies to every issue.

  • Australia: GST-free for investment-grade platinum. Australia's exemption threshold is 99% purity, and at 999.5, all Perth Mint platinum coins qualify. Perth Mint coins are available directly from Perth Mint's retail channels and authorised dealers, with no tax on acquisition.
  • United Kingdom: Platinum is subject to 20% VAT, regardless of purity or legal tender status. This applies equally to Perth Mint wildlife coins and standard bars. These coins are not UK legal tender, so CGT applies to any disposal gains. The annual CGT allowance is currently 3,000 GBP. For UK buyers who want CGT-exempt platinum, the only option is the 1 oz Platinum Britannia.
  • United States: No federal sales tax. Over 35 states exempt investment-grade precious metals. Perth Mint coins at 999.5 purity meet the requirements for inclusion in a self-directed precious metals IRA (platinum must be at least 99.95% pure under IRS Section 408(m)). Long-term capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate, up to 28%.
  • Canada: GST/HST-exempt for platinum coins at 99.5% purity or higher. No provincial variation on this federal exemption.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt at 99% purity. No capital gains tax applies. New Zealand's combination of no purchase tax and no disposal tax makes it one of the most favourable jurisdictions for platinum investors.
  • Singapore: Qualifies for the Investment Precious Metals (IPM) GST exemption at 99% purity. Perth Mint is LPPM-accredited. No capital gains tax in Singapore.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax. Fully tax-free.
  • South Africa: Platinum is subject to 15% VAT on retail purchases. No platinum coin exemption exists comparable to the gold Krugerrand.

Perth Mint Wildlife vs Core Sovereign Platinum Coins

The five major sovereign platinum coins form the backbone of the 1 oz platinum market: the American Platinum Eagle, Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf, British Platinum Britannia, Australian Platinum Kangaroo, and Austrian Platinum Philharmonic. All five share the same 999.5 purity, sovereign government backing, and broad dealer acceptance.

Perth Mint's wildlife coins differ from the Kangaroo in a few meaningful ways. The Kangaroo has a fixed design and is produced at scale for the pure bullion market, keeping premiums competitive and secondary market liquidity high. Wildlife coins feature annual design changes and lower mintages, which means higher premiums at purchase but potential collector appreciation over time. The Wedge-Tailed Eagle's association with John Mercanti gives it particular recognition among American collectors who know Mercanti's work on the Silver Eagle reverse.

Against international competitors, Perth Mint wildlife coins share a common challenge with all non-core platinum issues: narrower dealer recognition. A Platinum Eagle or Maple Leaf will sell quickly at any major dealer worldwide. A Perth Mint Wedge-Tailed Eagle or Emu in platinum may require a more specialist dealer or slightly longer selling time. The trade-off is the combination of lower mintage, annual variety, and Perth Mint's strong brand. For investors who already hold core sovereign platinum and want diversification within their platinum allocation, the wildlife series adds variety without sacrificing sovereign government backing.
