About the Platypus Platinum

The Platinum Platypus: A Discontinued Perth Mint Collector Coin

The Platypus is a platinum bullion coin produced by the Perth Mint from 2011 to approximately 2019, carrying an A$100 face value as Australian legal tender. It is struck in 999.5 fine platinum with a maximum annual mintage of 30,000 coins for the 1 oz size, making it one of the lower-mintage sovereign platinum coins in the modern market. The series has since been discontinued, with the Platinum Kangaroo replacing it as the Perth Mint's primary platinum bullion offering.

The platypus is one of only five species of monotremes (egg-laying mammals) and is endemic to eastern Australia and Tasmania. No other sovereign mint produces a platypus bullion coin, giving this series a monopoly on the design subject. When European scientists first encountered platypus specimens in 1798, many thought the animal was a hoax: a duck bill apparently sewn onto a beaver's body. The animal's extraordinary biology extends to the males being venomous, with spurs on their hind legs that deliver a painful sting. This makes it one of very few venomous mammals in the world.

The reverse was designed by Natasha Muhl, showing a platypus swimming beneath lily pads in its natural freshwater habitat. The design captures the animal mid-stroke with its distinctive bill and beaver-like tail visible. Unlike the Perth Mint's Kangaroo, Koala, and Kookaburra series, the Platypus did not feature annually rotating designs; the same platypus composition was used throughout the production run, with only the year date changing.

The discontinuation around 2019 means surviving platinum Platypus coins are a closed set. Combined with the 30,000 annual mintage cap (compared to the unlimited production of major competitors like the Platinum Maple Leaf), specific year dates may develop collector premiums over time as the available supply narrows.

Silver Platypus Companions

Silver versions appeared in 2021 in unusual sizes: a 1.5 oz coin (9999 fine silver, A$2 face value, 40.9 mm diameter, unlimited mintage) and a 2 oz coin (9999 fine silver, A$2 face value, 75,000 mintage) produced as part of the Perth Mint's "Next Generation" series featuring Australian animals with enhanced design detail. The 1.5 oz weight is uncommon in the bullion market, where 1 oz is the standard; buyers who prefer uniform sizing for their stack may find this less practical.

Security

The Platypus does not carry specific named anti-counterfeiting technology. It has the standard Perth Mint "P" mintmark and the Perth Mint's government-backed guarantee of weight and purity. Unlike the Kangaroo series (which received micro-laser engraving from 2016), no additional security features are documented for the Platypus.

Platinum Platypus Tax Treatment by Country

Australia

Investment-grade platinum at 99% purity or higher is GST-free in Australia. The Platypus's 999.5 fineness qualifies. Capital gains tax applies on disposal, with a 50% discount for individuals holding the asset for more than 12 months. As Australian legal tender, the Platypus is backed by the same investment-grade framework that covers the Perth Mint's Kangaroo and Koala programmes.

United States

The Platinum Platypus is IRA-eligible. It meets the IRS purity requirement for platinum (99.95% or higher) and qualifies as a sovereign legal tender coin from a recognised foreign mint. Capital gains are taxed as collectibles at up to 28% federal rate. Since the series is discontinued, US buyers will find these on the secondary market through major dealers.

United Kingdom

Platinum Platypus coins attract 20% VAT on import and purchase. They are not UK legal tender, so they are also subject to CGT on disposal. The coin is not widely stocked by UK dealers, making it harder to source than the Platinum Britannia or Platinum Maple Leaf.

Other Jurisdictions

  • Canada: GST/HST-exempt as investment bullion at 99.5% purity.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt at 99% purity. No CGT.
  • Singapore: IPM GST-exempt for qualifying platinum. No CGT.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no CGT.

Platinum Platypus vs Perth Mint Competitors and International Coins

The Platypus's most direct replacement is the Platinum Kangaroo, which took over as the Perth Mint's primary platinum coin after the Platypus was discontinued. The Kangaroo has higher market recognition, stronger dealer availability, annual design changes, and micro-laser engraved security features. For a buyer choosing between the two on the secondary market, the Kangaroo offers better liquidity and easier resale. The Platypus's appeal is its rarity (30,000 annual cap, closed production run) and the novelty of a design subject that no other mint has used.

The Platinum Koala is another Perth Mint animal series with historical significance in platinum (first struck in 1988, predating the American Eagle by nine years). The Koala offers a wider range of platinum sizes (from 1/20 oz to 1 kg) and has a longer collector following. Both the Koala and the Platypus are lower-profile than the Kangaroo in dealer inventories.

Against the major sovereign platinum coins from other mints, the Platypus is a niche product. The Platinum Maple Leaf offers Bullion DNA authentication and the most competitive premiums. The Platinum Britannia provides UK CGT exemption. The American Platinum Eagle has the deepest US secondary market. The Platinum Philharmonic offers competitive European pricing. All of these are actively minted with ongoing supply.

The Platypus is best understood as a collector-investor piece for someone who specifically wants a uniquely Australian platinum coin with limited supply. Its 30,000 annual cap and discontinued status mean it will not be diluted by future production. For buyers whose priority is accumulating platinum at the lowest cost per ounce, the actively minted sovereign coins will consistently offer better value and easier buying and selling.
