About 25g Platinum Bars

25 Gram Platinum Bars: A Metric Mid-Range Option

The 25g platinum bar occupies a narrow niche in the platinum market, sitting between the fractional gram-weight bars (1g, 5g, 10g) that serve as entry-level products and the more cost-efficient 1 oz platinum bars that dominate retail trading. At 25 grams (0.804 troy ounces), this denomination is slightly lighter than a full troy ounce, making it a metric-market product primarily produced by Swiss refiners for buyers who prefer gram-based denominations.

The platinum market at 25g is dominated by PAMP Suisse, which offers both the 25g Fortuna and the 25g Multigram format at this weight. The Fortuna is a single minted bar bearing PAMP's signature Lady Fortuna design, sealed in CertiPAMP assay packaging. The Multigram version is a divisible product containing multiple smaller bars that can be individually separated while retaining their assay certification. Both carry 999.5 fine platinum purity.

Premiums on 25g platinum bars are higher than on 1 oz bars because the slightly smaller weight cannot offset the fixed manufacturing costs of minting, assaying, and packaging each unit. For buyers in troy-ounce markets (UK, US, Australia, Canada), the 1 oz bar offers better value per gram. The 25g format is more natural for continental European and Asian markets where metric weights are standard and buyers think in grams rather than troy ounces.

The practical difference between 25g and 1 oz (31.1g) is just 6 grams of platinum. Unless a buyer has a specific preference for metric weights or the PAMP Multigram divisibility concept, the 1 oz denomination is generally more liquid, more widely stocked, and available from a broader range of refiners.

Tax Position for 25g Platinum Bars

Platinum bars at 25g face the same tax treatment as any platinum bar regardless of size. The weight does not affect tax eligibility in any jurisdiction.

  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT on purchase. CGT applies on disposal (18-24% rates, GBP 3,000 annual exemption). No legal tender status. VAT-free vault storage available from some dealers to avoid the 20% purchase cost.
  • United States: Exempt from sales tax in most states (35+). Capital gains taxed at 28% collectibles rate. IRA-eligible at 99.95%+ purity from LBMA-accredited refiners (PAMP qualifies). The 25g weight's 999.5 purity exceeds the IRS 99.95% requirement for platinum in retirement accounts.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt at 99.5%+ purity. The 25g PAMP bar at 999.5 qualifies. RRSP and TFSA eligible through self-directed accounts with qualifying custodians.
  • Australia: GST-free at 99%+ purity. All standard 25g platinum bars exceed the threshold.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt at 99%+ purity. No capital gains tax.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt as IPM (Investment Precious Metal) at 99%+ purity from LPPM-accredited refiners. PAMP qualifies.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.
  • European Union: Standard VAT applies (17-27% by country). No investment platinum exemption.
  • South Africa: 15% VAT. No exemption for platinum bars.

The 25g size meets all purity thresholds globally since it is refined to 999.5, which exceeds every country's minimum for tax-exempt platinum (99% in Australia, NZ, and Singapore; 99% in Canada; 99.95% for US IRA eligibility).

PAMP Suisse 25g Platinum Products

Two PAMP Suisse products account for all current dealer offerings at the 25g platinum weight. Both carry the 999.5 fineness standard and are produced at PAMP's LBMA-accredited refinery in Ticino, Switzerland.

The 25g PAMP Suisse Fortuna Platinum Bar features the iconic Lady Fortuna design that has appeared on PAMP products since 1979. The Roman goddess of fortune is depicted blindfolded, holding a cornucopia overflowing with coins, alongside sheaves of wheat and a wheel of fortune. Each bar is individually serialised and sealed in tamper-evident CertiPAMP assay packaging. PAMP's proprietary VeriScan technology allows authentication via smartphone app by scanning the bar's unique microscopic surface topography.

The 25g PAMP Suisse Multigram Platinum Bar is a divisible product, following the same concept as PAMP's gold Multigram+25 (25 individual 1g bars in a single card). The Multigram format offers built-in divisibility without breaking a larger bar, though at a higher per-gram cost than a single 25g piece. Each individual bar within the set retains its own sealed CertiPAMP assay certification when separated.

The absence of competing refiners at this weight in platinum (Valcambi, Heraeus, and Argor-Heraeus produce 25g gold bars but less consistently stock platinum at this size) means PAMP effectively owns the 25g platinum bar market. Buyers seeking an alternative brand at a similar weight would need to look at 20g platinum bars or step up to the more widely-produced 50g denomination.
