20g Silver Round: frequently asked questions
-
Yes. At 999 purity and 20g weight, a 20g silver round contains 20 grams of metal that is 99.9% silver. The remaining 0.1% is trace alloy, so the actual pure silver content is fractionally below 20 g, but for bullion pricing purposes it is treated as 20 g fine silver.
-
A silver round is privately minted and has no legal-tender face value. It is not issued by a government mint and cannot be used as currency. Silver coins, by contrast, are struck by a sovereign mint, carry a face value, and are legal tender in their issuing country. Rounds typically trade closer to spot than government-issue coins and carry lower premiums.

Silver rounds attract VAT or GST in most markets. In the UK, silver bullion is subject to 20% VAT; in Germany 19% applies. Canada exempts investment-grade silver from GST/HST above the purity threshold, and Australia exempts investment silver from GST under a similar rule.
