10 oz Platinum Bar: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 10 oz platinum bar across dealers we track is $16,606.87 from Suisse Gold, with a discount of 0.9% below the platinum spot price of $1,680.00. Larger bars like 10 oz typically carry smaller percentage premiums than smaller fractional platinum bars.
A 10 troy oz platinum bar contains 311.035 grams of platinum. Troy ounces (used for precious metals) are slightly heavier than avoirdupois ounces: one troy oz is approximately 31.1 g. The bar is typically a dense, compact slab given platinum's high density of around 21.4 g/cm3.
Platinum is rarer than gold. Annual mine production of platinum is far lower than gold, and its concentration in Earth's crust is also lower. That relative scarcity is one reason platinum has historically traded at or above gold prices, though market demand and industrial use patterns also drive the price relationship between the two metals.
Generic platinum bars are typically 999.5 fine, meaning 999.5 parts per thousand platinum. This is the standard for investment-grade platinum bars and is comparable to the fineness of platinum used in many bullion coins. The remaining 0.5 parts per thousand consists of trace alloying elements.
